Wartburg JV beat Simpson's JV and most of their varsity 27-21 yesterday in Indianola. Wartburg dressed 49 and Simpson dressed about 100.

With too much time on my hands I compiled the following football roster numbers

1.  Simpson         141
2.  Central           126
3.  Wart               116
4.  Coe                100
5.  Luther              99
6.  Loras                93
7.  Dubuque           91
8.  Buena Vista      75
9.  Cornell              60

It appears to me that Simpson should have the largest JV squad.  Wart left 67 players home.  If you subtract 67 Varsity players from Simpsons total that would give them 74.  Wart has also won some games by a more lopsided scores than Simpson allowing them to put more sub in and thus fewer JV players eligible to play.

Another explaination might be that footballdady was using his fingers on his right hand to keep track of the tens and couldn't figure out how to use the second hand to get an accurate count of the Simpson players.

Good luck to all squads Varsity and JV.  Do we play any Freshman games?

Which brings me back to my question with 146 players what has happened to the Stoem ??? ??? ??? ???

Yeah, I don't have any details about Cornell's financial situation, I just hear that it's not good.  Also, I will give you that the academic standards at most IIAC schools are comparable, however not all schools treat athletic admissions the same.  Most schools have some kind of hush-hush point system that coaches can use on certain players to help them get accepted.  I don't know for certain about Northwestern or Stanford, but I know this is true for several tough academic schools in D3 like Wheaton College in Chicago, which has higher academic standards than most schools in the midwest.  Most administrations and admissions departments are willing to work with the athletic department in this regard, as they understand the importance of sport to enrollment and money coming in.   It's not that athletes in general get in on a lower standard, it's usually a point system that coaches can select to use points on students they believe will be able to be successful at their institution, both academically and athletically.  However, I'm almost certain that Cornell does not use this system.  The difficulty comes when the college won't let in a hard working kid with 3.0 GPA with just a 20 ACT, when that kid probably is going to get in as a coveted athlete at most every other IIAC school. It's difficult to attract quality athletes with good enough grades to a school like Cornell with their recent history.  I'm not saying it's impossible for Cornell to climb out of the hole, but it's a long uphill battle with barely 52 guys on the roster and little administrative support.  Other sports have shown that success is possible, mens basketball and wrestling, as well as baseball before the last coach took over.  Although, I would argue that the road to turning around a college football program can be more challenging than baseball or basketball where 9 or 5 guys play and smaller rosters are standard.  Also, it's easier to lure high quality athletes for wrestling when Cornell has a coach with such an impressive resume.  Maybe the football program can do the same, but I'm not sure the money is there to make a hire like that.

I wouldn't be so sure that Dillon was fired, as it may seem.  I'm not so sure that Cornell is as invested in having a successful football program as other schools in the league, unless the new AD is really changing the landscape at the school.  Btw, I'm kinda out of date on the school... I don't have much of a connection there anymore, just going off what I used to know about the school.

Lots of times coaches need to see results on the field too stay at a school and if they where short on funds then they will struggle.
We may never know but Dillon was the guy too turn it around so Cornell will now step back again

Congrats to Nate Snead - IIAC Male Athlete of the Week
For the second time this season.  I'm just saying...

Boyle has won Offensive Player of the Week 3 times this year, the most of anyone in the league.

I'm just saying...

The IIAC figured they couldn't give it to Zweifel EVERY week.  So they spread the Athlete of the Week award around to some other schools...I kid, I kid  ;D ;D ;D

What about the freshman TE from DQ howd he do any players of the week ????

Nieman was shown the door and the team that went 7-3 last year was his kids . The kids that he brought in then graduated and this year 3-7 or 4-6

I disagree, unless you're playing all FR and SO.  Other than transfers, all of the juniors and seniors are Niemann's guys.  You can say the same thing about Niemann's first two years, they were all Williams' recruits.  In fact, if you look back on it, most of the impact players from the '03 playoff year were Williams' guys.  Niemann never had a winning record with all of his own guys.  I would be surprised if you will be able to say the same thing about coach Glo four years from now.

I agree the 1st few years of Niemann those where Williams guys. And I agree Glo will win my point was no matter who coached last year they where going to win. And I do think it was time for him to go I was not defending him just pointing out facts just not very well  ??? ??? ???

Were Hefty and Neimann canned? I thought VInny B was the only one that got pushed out.

As for the crowd-
I think Knights fans checked out after the Coe loss when it became evident that for the first time since 1998, Wartburg wouldn't have a chance to win the IIAC title in the last week of the season.
As much as Dutch fans want to think we show up because we're playing you, we actually show up when we both are good, otherwise its just another football game.

Talking to our players after the game, we would love to play it again, any time, any where.
Of course, what kind of competitor wouldn't want to replay a game they lost (what is there to lose)?  I'm just not following your point.  This was the first time I'd seen the Dutch this yr, and the defense looked meh, at best....but Wartburg's didnt' look very good either.

If they played again, I'd guess another high scoring game and I'd give the Dutch the edge based on being able to run/control the game.

Whatever, I'm fine w/ Wartburg taking some frustration out on Simpson and sending them into the offseason w/ a BIG LOSS!!!!!!!!

What about Simpson and frustration ??? Every one thought they would be as good as last year   :'( :'( :'(

I think a strong case can be made for Nate Snead for player of the year.  He has 9 passing td's and 13 rushing including the game winner against UWSP.  His qb efficiency rating is 138.08 vs Boyle's 131.2.

Boyle's rating is 148.8 and combined passing/rushing has accounted for around 800 more yards and and 2 more touchdowns than Snead.  Zachary is having the best year at rb in the league and Boyle is at qb.  Zweifel should be ranked ahead Snead.

I'll give you Staker as COY, although to go from 5-5 to a projected 9-1 or 6-4 to projected 10-0 as McMartin has is really the same level of improvement.  The fact that Coe was given no respect in pre-season ratings AND they seem to have done it with a relatively one dimensional offensive attack is quite a feat.

If Player of the Year is so named because they are avoiding the Most Valuable Player comparison, then I assume POY is the best player in the league.  In that contest it goes Zachary, Zwiefel, and dead heat for 3rd with Boyle/Snead/Bladt.  DZ is out rushing #2 RB by 40 yds per game in conference.  And much of that is done in the first half of blowouts.  Zweifel is similarly ahead in receiving yards.  Boyle has strong passing stats, but also average 32 attempts per game, to Central's dual system with 21 per game.  Central hasn't needed to pass as much as Boyle, so while Boyle may be very valuable, Zachary is the best player.  Maybe Zwiefel can have it next year when DBQ is more competitive.

I could see a co-COY award this year...perhaps?

Have to agree that Zachary is POY going by the stats and statements youve made.

I agree COY co-coaches and Zachery is the POY he has really been the key to Central and they are undeafeated

In the spirit of the baseball playoffs underway, I submit Central's magic number for clinching the IIAC championship and AQ for the playoffs is 1 for each of 4 teams.

Contenders:
Coe - 1 loss -  Loras, BV, DBQ left - Central owns the head to head so 1 Central win  OR 1 Coe loss and . . . Trophy to Pella.

Luther - 2 losses, Central owns the head to head, they are not in the running without 4 way tie.

BV - 2 losses - Central, Coe, DBQ left - Central wins one OR BV drops to 3 losses  . . . . Trophy to Pella

Wartburg - 2 loses -Luther, Central Simpson left  Central wins or Warts drop to 3 losses . . .  trophy to Pella.

So if the Dutch drop 2 . . .   Coe could win out and  . trophy to CR

. . . BV beats Coe  and Warty wins out = 4 way tie = Rose Bowl Rule = BV

. . . BV beats Coe, Luther wins out (beats Warty) = 4 way tie = Rose Bowl Rule = Luther head to head over BV?

. . . Coe beats BV and loses to Cornell or Loras Norse beats Warty -  3 way tie Central/Coe/Norse  =  trophy to Pella via head to head

. . . Coe beats BV and loses to Cornell or Loras Warty beats Norse -  3 way tie Central/Coe/Warty =  Rose Bowl Rule = Coe

Everybody got that? - there will be a quiz in the morning.

What a miserable night for high school football down here in SE Iowa.  Mrs. Warthog and I just walked in the house, we actually left a game early.  BB had his Mepo Bulldogs up 27-0 over the L-M Falcons in the fourth quarter so we called it a night.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the playoffs shake out.

The playoffs if you are a 4A team 3-6 can get you in the playoffs. Something is wrong when thats good enough to be in the playoffs. But hey its all about the money  8) 8) 8)

Funny stuff Klompen I would agree that having Hansen, or Boyle, or Reynolds would be a good thing.  But one thing my son told me is that a QB gets better with playing.  If you had Hansen, Boyle, Reynolds, and Snead all on the same team which would you play and who would be getting better.  That is what is great about small college football.  There is a stage so that many kids can get better and become or realize their potential.  Football is also a team sport.  The QB can not be as successful as he is if those "Rhinos" (5 lineman) don't do their jobs, and then the 5 other RB's or receivers do theirs.  Blocking, running routes, and catching are all big parts of the game that are lost many times.  If all 11 are not doing there job a team can look bad.  The trouble is that many times its the QB left getting the blame.  When all 11 are doing their jobs to much of the time the QB is the only one getting the credit.  Being the QB you are the hero or the goat to the fans.

Well  ::) ::) ::) Said
