It's AU Spring Break and Pep is on the 33-passenger Alfred University bus with 30 other passengers, bound for De Land, Florida where, in four-and-a-half-days, they will build a house up from a concrete slab together with a family who will one day soon occupy and enjoy a decent, affordable home built to code that can be expected to stand the test of tumultuous times (and hurricanes). This will be the 19th house that Alfred University students have constructed in De Land, Florida since 1997.
Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge....a refreshing break from the traditional collegiate Spring Break!

Well, over at IC, the discussion of the moment is the proposed new mascot to be used with the Bombers name (they are adamant the name is not going away with this). You can take a look at the options here:
http://ithaca.edu/mascot/finalists/
Being honest, I am not overly thrilled with any of the three proposals here. I don't have anything against adopting a mascot, but none of the ideas really strikes me as demanding to be selected.
EDIT to add-
Football coach Mike Welch was asked his opinion of the trio of ideas by the Ithacan. Here's what they have him saying:QuoteThough I applaud the efforts of the committee, which was given a very difficult task, I would not be happy with any of the three finalists.
I am a 1973 graduate and have been a coach at Ithaca College for 27 years. Over these many years, I have seen the efforts to change the name or develop a mascot for our school. This new attempt has brought similar results.
I feel the name is the symbol. The word Bomber is a symbol for our commitment to excellence in everything we do. The word Bomber is a winner. The more I look at other colleges and universities and what we have at Ithaca College, this spirit is rare. It is a spirit of family, hard work and commitment to not only win in life, but to do it the right way, to do it with class. Though the efforts are noble, I do not know how you can improve on that.

Im sure I missed a lot and it has already been said but this is absolutley ridiculous. How stupid can you be to compare the Ithaca Bombers to War? Its a pilot or a plane or whatever... who gives a crap... I think its a great and differenciating name... i would love to see the names and titles on that 19 person panel that picked these three names... or the person that actually thought about this and thought it was important enough to make a change. Sounds to me like someone is trying to make a name for themselves ... and whoever this person or persons is... is completely concerned about the wrong things... how about having fun and stop being concerned about idiodic things like this. I literally thought it was a joke when I first heard this... One of the panel members said in the article in the post standard in syracuse that it speaks to his generation and how bad the current wars are and 9/11... REALLY?
Somedody saying Ithaca Bombers makes you think of that? Absolutley ridiculous... when does it stop

Thinking about the conference big picture, it seems like Alfred, with Secky and Dwyer, are the clear front-runners. Springfield might be the #2, but does anyone know who they lose?
Judging by some of the things people say, Fisher is losing some talent, so they're probably #3, ahead of an Ithaca team they own. Utica and the Wick round it out. And my stance on Utica will remain the same until they prove they can compete with the big boys.
Way too early 2011 prediction:
1. Alfred
2. Springfield
3. Fisher
4. Ithaca
5. Utica
6. Team Bolutus
I don't disagree with your predictions, but didn't Utica show that they can atleast compete with the big boys this year? With that QB only being a sophomore, i'm interested to see what they can do next year. And their RB was a So. and 2 top receivers were Jr.'s. They could put up some serious points next year.
If they open with Becker again, we could see 100 points... :-)
Well, true, I suppose I should have said "beat". Although, one of the things I didn't like about Utica was they closed the season very poorly. After basically playing a good Springfield team to a draw and playing Fisher tough, they really seemed to fade.
They played horridly at what turned out to be a not good Ithaca team, lost to a mediocre Hartwick and gave up 35 straight points in falling apart against Alfred. One of the things I like to see from a team is a strong finish. The offense that looked so potent in the early season fizzled completely, and averaged just 14 PPG in their last four games. Doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth
I am guessing competing against E8 schools instead of ECFC powerhouses Becker and Castleton State had something to do with it. I am not willing to say their offense is that great...yet. They have a lot of the right pieces in place...but bottom line is they ran roughshot against a couple of terrible non-conference opponents (RPI, Wilkes, and SLU were OK) and averaged 46.8 points per game while not in the E8...and only average 17.4 PPG against their E8 opponents (with their highest total being 24 against SJF). I think Utica is moving in the right direction, but like Bombers said, you have to actually beat someone in your league before you can gain any type of respect. Sure...they can compete with everyone, which is a great step for them. But when you are 1-24 in the league (not including any games against Norwich here) over the past 5 years, you aren't really going to scare anyone.
I'd put them last.. Did they win a conference game this year?

November 23, 2010, 05:13:22 PMQuote from: TGP on November 23, 2010, 04:05:23 PMI love the idea... Would def. have to put some thought into the ncaa bid... if both champs get an AQ do they have an overall champion game?... if they do that could hurt a team for NCAA's (injuries)
There are several proponents, including SJFC HC Paul Vosburgh, for a NYS "superconference". RT aka Eric Ren has gone so far to propose structuring it like the SEC with both "East" and "West" sub-divisions.
Below is my take on one way it could play out (certainly won't be the last time this comes up):
NYS East Division:
1. Springfield*
2. WPI*
3. Saint Lawrence
4. Merchant Marine
5. Hartwick
6. RPI
7. Union
NYS West Division:
1. Hobart
2. Rochester
3. SJFC
4. Ithaca
5. Alfred
6. Utica
7. Cortland (assuming they left the NJAC could be Buff St in lieu or in addition to CSU)
* Grandfathered in due to LL/E8 alignments
The set up This would still allow for minimum of 2 OOC games and could add a 10th or 11th game to some schedules when the champs of the "NYS East" or "NYS West" battle it out.

Yea I think kids are just too lazy for that too.
what about my plan for having a book lottery at halftime? Or how about 1K off tuition for the next year or something? Free meal plan?
I like your idea, but with two caveats:
1) If the raffle is held before the last non-Cortaca game, people won't go to any other games, but if you make it obvious it will be held in the last one, people will only show up for that.
2) Would that, from a cost perspective, help the school and would they sign off on it otherwise? If the tickets are free, does a free meal plan, free books drive the expense up? How can we get seniors/those living off campus involved if the prize is for next year or for an on campus only thing?
I tried to actually come up with the logistics for my idea, and here's how I would do it. Assume, if you would, a $10 Cortaca ticket and four non-cortaca home games.
Zero games = No tickets
One game = One ticket for half-price
Two or three games = One ticket for free or two tickets for half-price, their choice
Four games = Two tickets for free
Sell tickets at the gate only. This way, students have to go to the stadium, which encourages them to stay. Also, it allows for two weeks where, if you have a group meeting or work, you can still buy two tickets. If students are too lazy to do that, that's fine, because that's sort of the point. The student who doesn't care enough about the team to go doesn't get rewarded with Cortaca tickets, or only gets one for themselves and not their friend. The students who go to more games get Cortaca tix.
See, my goal isn't so much to raise money for the school (Honestly, at $50,000 a year, money from football tix will get lost in the rounding). It's to increase overall football support and make the crowd at Cortaca less of a "It's Cortacaaaaaaaa!! We're so waaaaasteeedddd!" and more of a "Oh man, it's Cortaca! Biggest game of the season. Go Bombers!"
I hear what youre saying but 5 dollars off a ticket i dont think will motivate college kids these days... i think the availability to get the tickets would be the way to go.... with that said I think forcing kids to go to games would kind of defeat the purpose.

Interesting aside that Alfred coach D. Murray was defensive architect of Cortland return to prominence in the late 80s into the 90s, first as a defensive coach and then head coach. All class as is current Cortland pilot D. MacNeill. Teams have scrimmaged in recent past, even when AU administration declined a regular season game despite same open dates. Just part of the private/public sector rift that sent Cortland to New Jersey. A softening? Is that Buffalo St. bound for E8?
While I've not been in the conversations, obviously, I've also heard the same thing for some of the other state schools.

But seriously ECFC? You're conference champ that went 10-0 and ran the gamut goes down 50-0 at halftime?! I don't really follow other conferences than the E8 but that has to be worst conference in the past decade. I know Alfred is a good team but 50-0?!
It's terrible for Eastern Region football that the ECFC will be sending a team to the playoffs every season as a Pool A. Seriously, is the only criteria for getting a Pool A seed finding 7 patsies to join together? William Paterson would have run the table in the ECFC and at least stayed within 4 touchdowns of Alfred.
