Quote from: GopherOle73 on October 08, 2007, 12:11:24 PMI think the Johnnies passing game isn't really that spectacular. Koefed is pretty mobile, but it looks like he's throwing a boomerang out there sometimes, not exactly extraordinary. Weber sure is an impressive receiver though.

I'll agree that Saturday was far from his best performance. If you'd have seen him throwing against Concordia, though, you'd have come away with a much more favorable impression. Such is sports, though. I think Penz will be able to carve up the Cobber D. Should be a nice matchup for the Oles.

It was windy out there. I was hoping Penz was going to attack the middle of the field a bit more, but he was pretty safe with most of his throws.

On the personal foul...I honestly thought Kofoed was going to go down earlier.  This is where he is such a difference-maker.  He kept the play alive and forced the mistake.  The personal foul was certainly unintentional, but correctly called.  I don't think many people in the stadium wanted that call to conclude the game, but the referees did what they had to do...just unfortunate.

It was amazing how the SJU running game really came alive in the fourth quarter.

Obvious turning point of the game - SJU is down by 9 going into Q4.  Kofoed is under serious pressure and throws a duck to the streaking WR on the right.  Weber comes underneath to catch the ball and run it in for the TD.  This is the first play of the 4th quarter against the wind.  This just seemed to change everything.  The Oles were the only team pushing the ball.  Now the Johnnies were within two points.  This play seemed more likely to be an INT rather than a TD.  Great play by Weber.

I'm a day behind I guess... but I was standing on the 20-yd-line of the Ole sideline when the face mask penalty occurred. It was the right call, despite my hopes the officials would only penalize the Oles 5-yds and the desire to see everyone sweat through another 3rd down play. I don't know if Kofoed was for sure going down at that point until his facemask was grabbed, but he was definitely being hurried by that point.

It seemed like the Oles refused to blitz or stunt up front for most of the game and instead settled for trying to collapse the pocket. It seemed to be working well--but the Ole d-line looked pretty exhausted coming off the hot field after every series in the fourth. Eventually Kofoed realized that he didn't have to throw off his back foot anymore and he started moving around and making plays. Probably the difference in the game to me.

Overall--one of the best games/atmosphere I've seen... ever. Both teams played great--I just can't help but think the Johnnies felt lucky though to escape with the win. Once Deontae left the game it seemed like SJU was content throwing 50/50 balls down the sideline until they took the lead.

Did anyone watch the Stars/Avs game? They had a funny story about one of the Dallas defensemen. Dallas is kind of known for having quite a few Finnish players on their team, so a member of the Dallas press asked Matt Niskanen how his English was coming. He said it was pretty good, though he does have a bit of a Minnesota accent. The guy is from Virginia, MN. Someone didn't do their homework! :D

That is classic!  Nisky played at UMD and would have been a Gopher, but tDon wanted him to spend a year in the USHL first.  I'm glad he made the Dallas roster-- good to see Minnesota kids making it in the pros-- despite their troubles with the language...

The Wild game is on tonight in HD over the air.  I might need to get my Guinness and sit myself down in front of the plasma to enjoy it...

Hilarious story... it rivals a few of Russo's quotes from the morning paper about grumpy Koivu/Parrish.

I saw the Wild game listed under an HD channel (CSNHD) for DirecTV as well so I set it to dvr. I'd imagine it should come in because Center Ice is free for the next week. Who knows though because NHL.com does not have the game listed as an HD game.

Saturday night's Ducks-Penguins game on HDNet will be one to look forward to after coming back from Clemens Stadium with a win.  :-\

;D Field Turf can be slippery when wet.

Good thing we don't have FieldTurf at SJU!

From a sprinturf site:

5. Drainage.

When it rains, Sprinturf drains. No other competitor's field will drain faster. The Sprinturf all-rubber system removes rain substantially faster, because rubber doesn't absorb water like sand infill, and our fields employ a total-field perimeter and underdrain system - not just a perimeter underdrain, like our competitors.

Hey I'm trying to help you find excuses just in case... but if you want to take them away that's fine with me. I'm thinking this might be the one year though where a fast surface would be better for the Oles than for the Johnnies.

I wonder if the attendance will approach 13k... thoughts?

Gopher Ole,

I have enjoyed your posts only because you finally found a board you can actually talk trash to others since your team (STO) finally has a good team and we all know that the gophers are horrible.  Might actually be one of the worst teams in college football.  I wonder how many gopher faithful on chatting on the BIG 10 board (if one exists).

I never give a prediction before friday but this week I will make an exception.  Prepare for Oct. 20.

UM 17
NDSU 42

The Gophs are not good at football.

Uh, GopherOle, we've got a turf field, and there are no sprinklers that could be used to water it down :D

;D Field Turf can be slippery when wet. I'm really looking forward to Saturday though. I'm expecting one of the biggest crowds of the D-III football season to be there and hopefully one of the best games.

I also expect to see more posts predicting the Oles demise. Although I think even the Rat Pack isn't expecting to see a stomp.
