Should the coaching staff use their own money or money from the budget to purchase shirts and shoes?  I've always thought the purpose of fund raisers is to raise money for things that aren't in the budget.   I can understand the other complaints you have but this one doesn't seem all that out of line.   JMO

All the fundraising was done by the players, with the understanding that the team leadership council would decide how to spend the money.  Never once did someone in those meetings say that it would sure be nice if the coaches got new polo shirts and shoes.  If the leadership council had approved such an expenditure it would have been fine, but the money was supposed to be spent for practice equipment and equipment in the weight room.  We did not go around town collecting money to clothe our coaches.  We all bought our own cleats, workout shoes, etc.  Uniforms are (or at least used to be be) paid for out of a separate budget, partially funded through sales of BV apparel at games.  The point is that the way it was done was unethical and violated the trust of the players.

My opinion on Osterberger...

In 2007 I worked the chains in a game I felt Cornell could have won.  I overheard the sideline comments of Osterberger during the game (not so nice) and lost some respect for him.  But upon reflection, I could imagine me as head coach flinging the same invectives if my team were on the verge of losing to Cornell.

In 2009 I witnessed Cornell's victory over Loras.  I thought back to 2007, and  about what might be going on over on the Loras sideline.  Then I witnessed the class and dignity with which Osterberger's coaches and team (except 1 a-hole kid) congratulated the Cornell team.  I spoke further to my son about what the opponents said (except for the 1 a-hole kid) and he told me they were totally classy about the whole thing.

So in summary, one can be defined by how they act in their darkest or lowest points...my opinion is that Osterberger is a class act and I wish him good luck in his future opportunities.

Osterberger is a piece of trash.  He should have been fired from BV long before he got hired at Loras.  The guy used money from our spring football fundraiser to buy new polo shirts and running shoes for the coaching staff.  He refused to go through the handshake line when he would lose to BV.  He would go on obscenity-laced tirades about Loras every time they were mentioned, right up until they hired him.  I can't say enough bad things about him, and I hope he ends up coaching a junior high team like he should have been doing in the first place.

That or everyone is busy in the fields planting.  ;)

Not that I'm on here much anyway, but that has kept me pretty busy the last several weeks.

Yeah, on Saturday the Storm Lake Times  had an article about a commercial fisherman who was in town netting carp and other rough fish to ship to New York.  Kind of amusing that the drivel above got posted just two days later.  I'm gonna go ahead and guess the DNR wouldn't be granting a commercial fishing permit if the fish were unfit for consumption.  It's amazing the crap uninformed people come up with based on what they hear from a friend of a friend of a cousin who knows a guy who.......blah blah blah.

"Even the locals are smart enough" not to believe everything they hear from people who don't know what they're talking about.

So far Iowa hospitality has been great and is genuine. I am very impressed.

ps    the walleye is pretty good to

Do NOT eat ANYTHING that came out of STORM LAKE! Even the locals are smart enough not to do that. The lake looks nice but word is.....don't drink, don't swim, and definitely do not eat out of it!

I hope you're joking because that is complete and utter BS.

Snoop,

Martini's is your best bet - lots of good sandwiches and the steaks are pretty good.  Not sure how long you'll be in town, but the other good choices would be Plaza Mexico, Honey Kissed Pizza, or Boz Wellz (you can also order food from Boz Wellz at Lake Avenue Lounge, a nice little bar overlooking downtown Storm Lake).  You might also try La Juanita's, the Boathouse, or Legacy Steakhouse.  Really most anywhere is pretty decent, but I would avoid the Regatta Grille at the resort.  The food there is OK, but you can find better elsewhere for less money.  There are also a few newer ethnic restaurants I haven't tried but I've heard are good.  Nothing fancy, but authentic.  Got any other questions, let me know.

We're used to Loras never getting talked about on here.  Where did all the BV people go???  Klop gets busy and they all took off!!!

Still lurking, just not as often.  I've been busy too, and I haven't been able to make it to as many games this year.  Sorry that you guys from other schools don't understand what it's like to have a successful career. ;D

Very impressed with Fred Jackson tonight.  My fantasy team won without him, but I still wish I would have started him as a vote of confidence.

D3 - BV
D2 - Winona or USD, don't really care
FCS - UNI
FBS - Hawkeyes or Bama, don't really care
Pro - Apathetic Cowboys fan, gradually shifting to the Vikings

Beer - Depends on the mood i'm in, but my old standbys are Boulevard Wheat, Boulevard Long Strange Tripel, Fat Tire, Schell's Firebrick, and Grain Belt.  Coors or Coors Light for golfing/tailgating/boating/binge drinking.  Will try any beer once (usually more than once).

It's widely known throughout the media world that the Wartburg student radio station, KWAR, has provided the start to many household names in broadcasting.  None, however, are more famous than the host of Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keilor.

It's a commonly held belief on campus that the extraordinarily high med-school placement rate among the college's student/athletes serves as the foundation of his stories involving the Lutheran Utopia, Lake Wart-bur-gone, where the women are strong, the men are good looking and the children are all above average.

Must have also been the inspiration for New Albion College  ;) (for those who haven't read the book, it was a sham of a college whose president held a PhD from a nonexistent college).

BV had respectable teams the past couple years, with several All-Americans.  This year they were relatively young, some of their best wrestlers were injury-plagued, and the transition to a new coach may have had an effect as well.  Also, Al Baxter's last several teams were not very good by Iowa Conference standards.  BV improved greatly after Mark Schwab took the reins in '05, and from what I've heard Sevond Cole will be a great coach.  I think any coach would've had a tough time at BV this year, and having a first-time head coach at the reins probably didn't help.

Price of Wartburg 2009-10   4.9% increase. Lowest % increase in a decade
Tuition                   $26,650
Student Fees                800
Room (varies)             3,615
Board                        4,000

TOTAL                     $35,065

Given that the Consumer Price Index rose only .1% from 12/07 to 12/08, that is a huge increase.  If tuition increases outpace inflation by 4.8% annually over the next 10 years, 2019 tuition, room, and board will run about $56k in today's dollars.  Better hope that endowment makes a quick and dramatic turnaround.

Did BV's tuition go down this year?

No, and my comment was not an affront to Wartburg.  BV will run into the same problem eventually, although their much larger endowment will help them to offset cost increases more effectively and farther into the future than Wartburg.  Wartburg, BV, and the rest of the IIAC will have an increasingly difficult time remaining financially solvent in the years ahead if they do not either:  A) grow their endowments significantly; or B) find ways to trim the fat out of their budgets.  I don't think any of us on here love our schools enough to pay $56k a year to attend, and the endowment is what helps defray the high cost for 98% of students.  If the tuition increases at a rate greater than the endowment grows, the 4% annual draw becomes a smaller and smaller percentage of total tuition, increasing the real cost to the average student.  It's going to be a very serious problem for all of our beloved institutions.
