Ouch, thanks...haha.

UD is looking pretty nice these days, not going to lie.  Loras, on the other hand, can't seem to get that old-meets-new look down, they just end up with monstrosities like the AWC.

Haven't posted in about a year...did I miss anything?.......Other than Loras' sad, sad performance.

I love how UD's roster has become like the friggin' Pentagon Papers around here.  ;D

Looks like Loras has re-done their athletic website, and they have their roster up now as well:  http://www.duhawks.com/roster/7/5.php.

Of the incoming freshmen the Duhawks bring in from Iowa (not near as many as come from Illannoy), it looks like the majority are from either Waukon, Western Dubuque, or Wahlert.  They did recruit other schools besides those three, right?

Sadly I'm not getting duhawks.com to fire up tonight, but I'm excited to see the (god I hope) upgrade. I've always been disappointed in the lack of Iowans on Loras' roster. They have a nice pipeline from those three schools, but how about a few guys not from along the river? I know they love those Illinois boys, too, but we seem to get some of our best play out of the Iowans we do have (recently: McGrew, Gesing, McMahon, McCarren, Reed Peterson, etc). Why would they shy away from places like Benton Community, Columbus, or Dowling?

Nice TH article on the Duhawks, maybe a little too optimistic, but why not, right?

Beer tossing Loras student makes the front page of the Telegraph-Herald.

du-sz, part of us razzing on the Loras fans is we want more of you on here.  I believe last season, Loras was the only IIAC school that didn't have regular posters on here.

I'm glad you guys are on us (sadly, I and maybe one other are the only ones responding for now haha). I'm always disappointed in the lack of Loras representation on here.  Maybe it can convince some people to get involved. We need it!

Also....I was looking at Luther's athletics website. It looks pretty sweet. I know it's been that way for a quite a few months now, but I'm always impressed. Other schools should start thinking about updating their online look (esp. Loras and UD).

Wartburg JUST redid  theirs on Wednesday.

The new Wartburg site looks nice, their Lutheran counterparts outdid them a little as far as sheer looks, but I like it's clean style (and the fact that you don't have to scroll).  It's good to see some are moving into the 21st century...

God, I need some football to talk about. I'm talking about website designs, what's with that??

A) Loras posters aren't that fair-weathered. There simply aren't that many of us. I can only think of about 5 or 6 that have posted over the past few years. Even during the height of basketball success a couple years ago there are only a couple "running their mouths".

B) Nice toss by the Loras student/Cubs fan. We could have used an arm like that to actually win a game in the IIAC baseball tournament. Too bad he chose soccer :) ....Of course Loras has its fair share of d-bags, but what private school doesn't? Every IIAC school has their beer-tosser or homophobic quarterback.

Loras has their 2009 schedule up now....but that's it. Come on!

Which school will be the LAST to have their season preview out???

I got money on Loras, sadly. I don't even think they had one last year, the season just kind of started....

Maybe UD is really taking this "recruiting locally" thing seriously!!!

Also, Dubuque has been making an effort to get back to its roots.  There was a time if you had german heritage and were presbyterian in this area you almost automatically went to college at UD.  Especially if you lived in Grundy County.   UD has been stressing its Presbyterian roots a lot more over the last 10 years with this administration.  That might have had something to do with this kid.

du-sz, nice to see you on the football board.  We haven't had any Loras representation on here for awhile now.  Are you a North Tama grad?  My wife graduated from North Tama.

Good to hear about UD trying harder with in-state recruitment. It's been a while since I've been on the boards.  Since I left Dubuque I haven't been keeping tabs on Loras, and IIAC news, as well as I should. I'll get more into it come the fall.

I'm a GMG grad actually, so NT is right in our backyard; a good ole' Class A rival.  Good luck to Hanus, though. I always like to see small school kids succeed when they try the college game.

I would have thought "Cheese curds" would be the off-season topic in WIAC board.  ;D ;D ;D

Here is some IIAC F-ball news

http://wcfcourier.com/articles/2009/07/17/sports/preps/other_high_schools/11519598.txt

NT's Hanus to play football at Dubuque

TRAER --- North Tama High multi-sport standout Wyatt Hanus has announced his intention to attend the University of Dubuque next season to play football.

Hanus was the varsity quarterback for three years at North Tama, leading the Redhawks to a 29-5 record and a state runner-up finish last season. He broke 11 North Tama records while finishing with 4,698 passing yards and 50 career TDs. He earned first-team all-state and academic all-state honors.

Oh man, another reason to dislike UD, they have a North Tama kid playing for them. I find it odd that someone named Hanus (Same name as the Archbishop, from a a pretty Catholic area of the state) would go to school in Dubuque and choose UD over Loras haha. Obviously there are other reasons, but just on the surface it seems odd.

I saw him play once last year down in Traer, wasn't too impressed, but he obviously did some great things during the course of the year and during his career. It should be a good pick up for UD. His best attributes from what I remember were his accuracy and overall athletic prowess.

They're not celebrating an anniversary, by your own admission. They're celebrating 100 years of the rivalry.

In my humble opinion, this is the better way to do it.  I couldn't help but laugh at Loras a couple years ago when the celebrated "100 Seasons of Duhawk Football" even though there was a full decade in there where football was only a club sport "on the boulevard."  Poor effort if you ask me.

Even I thought that was a dumb thing to celebrate. Just an excuse to go alumni back and make new t-shirts.

I've been away from the boards too long....and no, not because Loras isn't in first place, but because I just haven't.

Can't say I'm too impressed with the Duhawks, though.  We're struggling, then looking good, then playing ok. Can't figure them out.  I guess I'll just accept the mediocrity, but it'd be nice to give it another run this year.  We seem to have some tools, and they've shown it in games like their latest with Wartburg.  Loses to Coe, and beatdowns by Cornell won't help the cause, though.

I feel like I've been gone from the boards forever.  I need to catch up on my basketball action, the Christmas season always puts me behind.  In just looking at some stats and records it looks like teams that were expected to be in the top half of the conference are already there.  I'm excited to see UD tonight in the AWC. UD looks like they're on the upswing, while the Duhawks, despite being 3-0 so far, look pretty susceptible.
Loras really needs their big men to start producing.  Neither Brant nor Abbuhl is getting much done and Pawelski can't hit anything in his first year.

Ok, enough being negative. With that said, I'm still pretty happy with the guards. They'll keep us in games with teams like BV and UD, but we really need to improve our paint presence if we want to win.

Also, I see the Iowa Conference jumped into the Youtube world. Their videos are really, really bad right now, but I'm glad they're getting on board with doing video.  Evident by the outcry for streaming games this year people seem to be pushing for it.  Are they looking to expand their video coverage? It'd be nice to see vids from all over the confernce outside of just streaming games.

Congratulations to the Wartburg and Loras foosballers.  The men's and women's teams from both schools are in the IIAC soccer championship matches tomorrow.  I'm hoping for 3 Knight championships all in one day.  It might be a long shot, but that is my dream.

Loras has the chance at 3 titles tomorrow (soccer, soccer, volleyball). Doubt it will happen, but two is very possible. Congrats to the Duhawk volleyball team on going worst to first in one season!

Week Ending

Player of the Week
Nov. 2, 2008

John Blesz, Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa/Kirksville (Mo.)
Blesz, a sophomore kicker/tight end, was called to duty following the late scratch of starting kicker Taylor Buhmeyer and went 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts and made a 27-yard field goal with 5:19 remaining in the game which proved to be the margin of victory in the Duhawks' 31-28 win over Central. The win was Loras' first in Pella since 1941. Blesz, who also caught two passes for 16 yards, was kicking at the collegiate level for the first time.

When was the last time a back-up kicker got player of the week???

Congrats to him, but this is a travesty in a week Tate Harrison had 22 tackles and several offensive performers excelled. The IIAC needs a defensive player of the week category.

Yeah it was kind of cool that they gave it to that guy. He did a heck of a job as our replacement kicker. With that said, the conference has a guy with 20+ tackles and a couple guys going over 200 yards on the ground and they all got shut-out from the honor...?!

Beautiful pictures of the Rock Bowl btw...gave me a nice new desktop.  :)

If you look at about every nickname in the IIAC there can be a good argument for why each sucks.

Duhawks, Kohawks - Typical throw something in front of Hawks because its in Iowa

Knights, Rams, Spartans- Sound like a newly consolidated high school that doesn't want to offend anyone.  All we need is a "Cougars" and we'd be set.

Beavers - Soft drink/water rodent

Storm - Our token WNBA-sounding entry

Norse, Dutch - Woah, its a local national origin, ooo scary....

I actually like most of the mascots in the IIAC, the -hawks are unique, the Norse and Dutch are honorable....Just saying its so easy to say one nickname is inferior to another.

From the relm of complete hearsay, Loras played Kirkwood close in a scrimmage recently (something we didn't do last year). Sounds like they have some legitimate big men to at least start filling the void. Despite popular belief we do return some bigs (Brant and Abbuhl). I know they aren't White and Slater, but they've always put in good minutes for us. I'm excited to see this year's roster, god only knows when we'll finally see it.

Hey du-sz...do you think you could head 6 blocks up Loras Blvd to UD and get some pics of the new basketball arena for me???  UD doesn't have any pics up on their site yet and I am not holding my breath that they will have any up soon.   :'(

Yeah I could probably do that. Hopefully they won't kick me out because I'm a Duhawk. :P

...and I wouldn't be too quick to put Cornell in the cellar either. They have quality returners. I think if you ask a few coaches around the IIAC, they'll tell you the Rams could be very legit team this year.

Looking at the Sub-state games from the other night, it looks like there are cases for its existance. Sure some of the travel distances were tough, but I think Dubuque teams and Class A District 6 teams are pretty happy this opening round exists.  The MAC is probably a little upset with the decision now.  In the big picture, it was a waste of time for some, i.e. CR Washington & WDM Valley, but a great opportunity for others. It probably won't make a difference in the final outcome of the playoffs, but the road to title might be a little more legitimate than it has been.
