Region 3 men's basketball / Re: Skyline Conference
February 23, 2009, 09:30:29 PM
I was just browsing the boards and was reading the post on the skyline.

"There is definitely a lot of work to do  but Coach Wood has done a tremendous job recruiting (there is no give to the 1400 and 3.5 GPA requirements for admissions) considering the schools he goes up against in recruiting battles, i.e. Williams, Amherst, Ithaca, Vassar, Skidmore, etc. etc. All these schools have bigger budgets, better facilities,  athletic tradition, and obviously this makes it a tough task to recruit against them. It is nice to come on here and say START RECRUITING but it is a little tougher to actually go do that. Not to be an elitist and I have nothing against the schools in the conference but Bard in the Skyline with no give in the admissions process is like Princeton trying to compete year in and year out in the NEC or MAAC. It is tough to go out and get the same caliber athlete and player when the pool of players you have to get is limited by grades and most of those kids aren't going to like a liberal arts school like Bard over a place like Amherst."

You need to join a different league or stop complaining about requirements.  This is the league Bard decided to join.  It was your choice.  Also i think it is funny putting those schools in the same paragraph as Bard.  It will be a long time,if ever, before Bard starts winning the recruiting battles with those schools.  Nothing against Coach Wood because i have no clue about the actual players on the team but he has a long way to go.

I was at the oneonta-new paltz game.  I couldnt believe that oneonta was the first place team in the conference.  They dont play very hard.  Grimes is he only one that plays with energy.  I dont think they are overly talented.  But they win so what can you say.  I would be surprised if they win the conference though.  New Paltz just doesnt have the depth.  The starting five are solid but they just dont have enough anymore losing the two top scorers and one of the top bench players.  I think oswego wil take the conference but it is up for grabs.  YOu cant count anybody out.

Not only is NP missing their top two scorers in Taylor and Anderson.  I was looking at the stats and they are also missing Jenkins who was playing 18 minutes a game for them and looked to be one of the better shooters off the bench.  I havent seen all the teams in the conference but after watching the geneseo game i thought the hawks had a chance of winning the league. I think the league is up for grabs.  Its not how you start but how you finish.  To bad for the hawks

Shaq you usually say good things about New Paltz.  What did they do? kill your cat!!!  This NP team is not the same team as old.  They actually have talented players.  Look at the stats, they have two freshmen as their leading scorers and a third starting playing over 20 minutes a game.  It is not easy to win with freshmen anywhere especially the SUNYAC which is very competitive.  They may make a run to the top half of the league this year.

Its about time oneonta makes a run.  They should be better they have nice facilities.  It looks like they have some good tranfers so hopefully this coaching staff can win some games.

New Paltz played against two division II teams.  they beat concordia(NY) by 5 and lost to Mercy College by 10.  They are young but they are a talented bunch of players.  I also heard that morrisville is leaving the league after this year.

New Paltz is going to be a sleeper this year.  I heard they have some pretty talented freshman and a couple talented transfers.

He is a very good player but he does not work hard all the time.  As a team they dont work hard all the time.  They are a team that could go a long way in the tournament but  I think they can get picked off because of their effort, they play in spurts.  Miller is the only consistant hard work.

Anthony Williams is the best player in the conference.  If he wants he will be playing somewhere for money next year.  Gorham doesnt seem to work hard all the time.  I know he scores and rebounds but just imagine if he worked hard all the time.

Lets be honest, that last group of rankings could really any different way.  Ithaca beat cortland and loses to SLU.  It is real tough to rank the last group.  I really dont think that Cortland is that good.  They have a good record but they are just a solid team.  No real athlete's, just tough guys.  That can only take you so far.

Sorry, I don't usually check my work when I write something on the D3Hoops website.

When you take a job at a university you should know what the requirements are when you take the job.  You can't take a job and then complain you cant get kids into school.  It is then your job to recruit kids who have the requirements and are good enough to play basketball.  I am not saying this is what happend to  Whitmore but it is what it is.  I say congratulations to the guy who has an easy job getting kids in.  That would be the next job I would apply to when it opens up.

Cards7580,
your 100% right you need more than just a nice gym to get recruits.  You need to be able to sell your school as a whole like you said.  But when your academics are just as good if not better it all helps.

Hey the gym at New Paltz is going to be great to bring recruits into. Give New Paltz a year or two to get things going they have a head coach that works his but off.  He is going to get it done there. And their is no reason to give a negative shot at new paltz.
