Embarrassing the degree to which Amherst is being out-cheered in LeFrak. Wouldn't have happened in my day. In any case, great game right now. Huge run by Nichols, we'll see if the Mammoths can maintain their composure.

A few from the Amherst list that I predict will make the final 30, I bet at LEAST half of these make it to the final cut. And Frost or Purple Frost will be the winner, I'd bet.
Aardvarks
Argonauts
Comets
Dire Wolves
Dragon Hawks
Frost
Gryphon
Horned Owl / Owl
Mammoths
Mastodons
Moose
Pioneers
Frost / Purple Frost
Purple Haze
Purple Storm
River Otters
Werewolves
Zephs won't make it, but is genius, and would have the benefit of confusing even more spectators new to the Amherst-Williams rivalry.
I hope that you're wrong about the Zephs not making it. That would be my choice. I would also be ok with Zephyrs, but prefer the plain Zephs, as it makes zero sense to outsiders. Perhaps Zephs could be the team name and a purple animal (moose, hamster, hawk) could be the mascot.

Excuse me if I missed this part of the discussion, but I was a little surprised to see no comments on the release of the 588 unique mascot ideas that were submitted to Amherst: https://www.amherst.edu/amherst-story/mascot/mascot-suggestions
Or, maybe you guys are just tired of talking about it...
The list with the rationale is worth reading...
My favorite must be the Amherst Fighting Microaggressions though Lord Zeph, Cider Donuts and Social Justice Warriors are all quite clever.
I really like that multiple people recommended either dogs in general (see, e.g. "good dog", stated rationale - "everyone loves a good dog") or their own family dogs in particular (see, e.g. "Garvin", stated rationale - "The obvious and perfect mascot for you is a large white and tan dog named Garvin with thick soft fur who lives in the mountains of New Mexico. You can see him in my icons. He is delightful, with great character, quite powerful, yet very gentle. The teams that used him would be nicknamed the Garvins. Funny, yet secure and completely value neutral. Also, he is very handsome and loyal.")

Don't look now, but Jayde Dawson might be having an Allen Williamson moment - by which I mean his three point shot might have finally clicked, forcing defenders to guard him more closely and making his ability to get to the rim an offensive force to be reckoned with.
He's averaging 18 points a contest while playing only 23 mpg and shooting at a 44% clip from beyond the arc. If he even remotely keeps this up, Hixon needs to find a way to keep him in the game for 30+ minutes.

Greg, IWUMichiganer, thanks for your posts on Benedictine.
One question - was there anything in particular that led to the Bennie's big jump to national contender this year? You've mentioned the improved team play of Lucas Johnson. Was there anything else? (Impact freshman, transfers, etc.?)

Anyone able to provide a scouting report on Benedictine? Obviously, at 30-0, they look to be a handful. When Connor Green and Co. are on, though, they can play with anybody.
The high-variance style of play has led to some frustrating losses the past couple of years, but if they're on the game next weekend, that would certainly more than make up for them.
Having a 1st night bye and playing 3 teams including D3 Hoops #10 and # 13, Benedictine outscored their opponents by an average of 18 points and out rebounded them by an average of 19 boards. How's that for a scouting report. They're pretty good.
Haha, I gathered that from their record and the margin of their victories. Could you drop any knowledge on their style of play or their individual players?

I haven't looked at his stats, so I don't really know how he compares to Sharry/Kizel in that respect, but I always thought Ben Rudin was a fantastic player. He also kind of helped to usher in the era of Midd being a NESCAC contender. Edwards, Locke, Sharry, Kizel, Thompson all followed in his footsteps.
I don't know if that's really an argument for him being the best, but I just wanted to throw his name in the mix.

Quick question: Does anyone know if Dylan Groff, the Amherst freshman, is related to Yram Groff, class of '89 (and 6th leading scorer in school history)? I've heard some former teammates of Yram's claim that they still feel that he's the best to ever don the purple and white.
Also, I know it's early, but it's pretty amazing that Riopel, Racy and McCarthy for Amherst would all be in the 50/40/90 club through six games. Racy is currently in the 50/50/100 club (membership:1). That's hard to do in an empty gym. Let's hope they can all keep up the hot shooting tonight.

I'm curious what posters who've had the chance to see Amherst think of Hixon's decision to replace Nabatoff with Racy in the starting lineup. It seems in keeping with current NBA trend of going with small lineups.

Another big factor today- aAmherst's bench out scored Wes's 42-0. Hixon's bringing in 4 contributors in last summer's recruiting class has been a huge boost.

Amherst leads by 22 with about 5 to play.
I kind of feel bad for Bowdoin -- they look a little tired and the long trip down to Trinity couldn't have helped. Amherst got a big advantage by having a much shorter trip than their opponents. Nevertheless, they've played a great game and their coaching has been excellent, as always.
It's not over yet, obviously, but I'd give the player of the game to McCarthy. He's scored 14 efficient points while keeping Hausman relatively in check on the other end. (although as I type that Hausman just made an and-one)

Interesting. Bowdoin has come out in man defense. Haven't seen that much this season.
Bowdoin went to zone in the rare instances that Green was off the floor.
Racy had 14 in the first half and that's the Amherst lead at intermission.

Wesleyan holds on to win by 3 after a last-second trey by Starks rimmed out after getting halfway down.
Exciting game. I think the winner of the late game should be favored tomorrow.
