Great game. UST with a nice run at the end.

Scott 2-11 from 3 land - ouch ??? But still able to come up with a clutch three late to tie the game. Definitely an off game for him.

Critical exchange early in the game with UST up 17-8 and momentum. Halvorsen comes in and in 4 1/2 minutes of play he gets 2 rebounds, commits a foul, and misses 3 three's. UST goes down 25-17.

Any news on the All-MIAC first-year team? In years past it was pretty easy be placed on the 5-6 man team but it looked like it would be much more competitive this year. Obvioulsy Clute is on it but I wonder who else managed a spot...

My list
Root for Clute
Fidy cent or just a Nicolai
Holland back
Wright can't be wrong
Rosy Palmer

Honorable mention
Throw out your Hipp
Holy Schmidtknecht

A play in an almost identical situation put the Gusties in the championship game. Carleton missed the front end of a 1-1 leading by 3 with 11 seconds to play. The Gusties grabbed the rebound and took the ball straight down the court. The Carleton defense was scrambling trying to cover any shooters. They managed to contest Van Sickle's shot, but Robbie Schmidt was standing unguarded in the corner.

I'll take my chances against a disorganized defense any day.

Good point. Looking back on the Carleton, this could be Hansen's strategy. In regulation, he called time out with 12 seconds left and Drake at the line. The missed free throw lead to Van Sic's 3 at the end.

In the Aug - Bethel play in game, Bethel calls a timeout in order to set up Madsen with a decent look and it paid off.

I saw the MIAC final. Great game. No need to go into all that's been covered. I sat in a mix of GAC and UST fans in the upper deck. Good mix of people but packed. I was surprised by the 1700 in attendance. It was about as close to standing room only as you could get.

Two questions for the MIAC Brethren of this board.
1) On GAC's last possession, why no time out? They definitely struggled to get the ball to Van Sic and even when he did get the ball, UST road him like Seabiscuit. Buy why no time out to set something up with 16 seconds left? Help me understand the thinking....

2) Who was the dude running around with his shirt off on the UST side?? Tell me it wasn't a poster from this board.....

Van Sic with a sic three to tie!! It's mayhem in St. Peter! We're going to OT baby.

The Bethel/Augsburg game was unbelievable. There's no other way to put it. It was a battle from start to finish and no matter what you say about that call at the end, Madson still had to make an unbelievable shot. And for those of you talking about Cassens being sick, Madson was not feeling any better. I heard him talking after the game and he could barely say anything and you could definitely tell that he was not his normal self. All this talk about Cassens having a gutty performance but the guy who made it happen in the end was Madson. On a side note I've never seen a player get fewer calls than him. Especially yesterday as he got absolutely murdered with no call and Cassens throws up the same shot and gets bailed out a couple of times. Hard to put my finger on why that is considering he's the person I'd take to shoot the game winner. All in all I'm hoping for a BU/UST showdown in the semis.

No one can take away Madson's shot and if he was under the weather, more power to him. But on the day, statistically he was average. Cassens had a career day in total points.

I'll let the numbers do the talking. Statistically speaking: Cassens has a career day, Madson has an average day.

Cassens
Minutes = 39
Points = 29
Assists = 2
Rebounds = 3
TO = 3
Shooting = 10-21
3's = 4-7

Madson
Minutes = 34
Points = 21
Assists = 0
Rebounds = 2
TO = 4
Shooting = 8-18
3's = 1-3

In some perverse way I suppose it's only fitting there was a controversial call on Femi Solaja in the closing seconds of the game, because there was an equally controversial non-call in the opening minute of the game.

Even better was when Solaja missed a dunk midway through the first half, hung on the rim (again) with no-call...  The Bethel crowd was going nuts. Now that's funny  ;D

Everything aside, this was a great game. An exciting back and forth game that lived up to its billing. That shot by Madson was unconscious! He's was completely defended, throws up this bomb and gets nothing but net. Unreal. What a way to set the stage for the playoffs.

But, the story behind the game. Cassens goes out for pizza on Friday night and gets food poisoning. (The waiter was allegedly a Bethel grad but I was unable to confirm). He's yakin' up za' all night long and still losing his lunch 30 minutes before game time. Then proceeds to "man up" and score a career high 29 points. And, there were some hard earned points. (Did you see the hurtin' Palmer laid on him during a drive in the first half ??? Ouch)

The Solaja goal interference call was a joke. Who calls that? With 24 seconds left?? Solaja had a great run with Augsburg, he'll be missed. Cool dude with a great personality, not to mention he's a rebounding machine.

That also put an end to a nice 4 year career for J Koz. This was a special player that proved you don't have to be 6'6" to play basketball, you just have to have heart and desire. (Over 750 career points, 140+ three point baskets, and 80+% career average from the free throw line.)

Post 2:

Voj brings up a good point regarding the "X" factor in the Bethel –Augsburg game this Saturday.  A very big key "X" factor in Augsburg's 2nd half resurgence has been the rediscovery of their outside shooting eye.  Cassens, David Olson, Justin Koslowski, FY Matt Quammen & even Mitch Dice have all had clutch outside shooting games.

In the Dawgs game against the Cobbs on Saturday, Augsburg was 8-15 from beyond the arc in the first half alone.  You take that shooting performance away from Augsburg & you could end up with a Sumo wrestling match like the Cobbs & Tommies had last night.

I may revisit this topic in a day or two, but the outside shooting for the Dawgs will be critical in their match-up against Bethel.  Two Augsburg players will have key roles:  Justin "the Fire Hydrant" Koslowski & Carlius Hodges.  Koslowski is a small mobile tank on the court & has a nice shooting touch.  Hodges is quick-quick, can run the point for a spell to let Cassens play the 2, & is an excellent on the ball & weak side defender. He does all those little things that don't always show up in the stat sheet.  He will definitely be a name to watch out for next season.

The outside shooting has really opened up the middle for Femi Solaja to do his thing & vice versa for the shooters.

Another little known fact: Augsburg's Femi Solaja & Bethel's Jeff Reck were high school teammates at St. Paul Harding High School. Back in the day about 4-6 years ago, St. Paul teams had a nice little run of basketball success & players from Harding, Johnson & Highland Park.

Excellent points on the Dawgs outside shooting. This brings about two thoughts:

Although Femi is one of the best big men in the league, I can't go with him for MVP. (Even though I could make a very strong argument to that fact). He wasn't able to carry the Dawgs during the first part of the year and it wasn't until Griess put in a three (small) wing offense to jump start the Dawgs outside shooting did they start to put it together. Compare this to a Wittwer that has just been clutch in so many games - ie that shot against Cord, money.

Second thought - Griess for coach of the year. He turned a dismal season into an exciting run. He worked his lineup until he found a winning combination. D. Olson's outside shoot opened up a lot of offense, not just Femi. Cassens and J Koz got a lot better looks. Griess has to be a serious contender if the Dawgs make the playoffs. Hats off to J Koz who has just been solid on both sides of the court this year.

I was in Winona last night. SMU's got some players. Holland took it to the Dawgs early. He's gonna be a player. They are young and will be good. SMU moved the ball real well, very unselfish play. I was impressed with their first half performance. Too bad they're like a bad t-pon right now and only good for one period. :o

Dawg's win the I94 battle royale 85-72. If they don't over look SMU, the game at Arden Hills could be the "win and in" game.

Dawg's up 70-59 with 3:40 left

The Dude- i believe you are not Jon Cassens, i was just saying it would be easy to assume who you were by the e-mail address that you posted under initially, and you now changed your e-mail address which i will not post up on here for "privacy reasons" (you can click on his name to find it out).  It seems assumptions are made on this board all the time.  Everyone makes mistakes.  Also, you could find any MIAC players e-mail by going to their website and searching for them, it is kinda public information.

No worries Prophet. Just didn't want to create locker room pin up material if ya know what I mean.  ;)

I might be singin' Kum bye ah but I'm still thinkin' about that fish sandwich.....

Dawg Dude,

I respected your skills in high school, but you're nothing short of pathetic for posting on here and making us think you're somebody other than who you really are. Wait till you get your degree, then feel free to post.

I've known Teddy Archer since he was about 12 years old. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few things happen on the court in the heat of the moment, but the kid is a class act off the court.

Hoops4Life and MIAC – stay away from the legal or journalism fields. Assumptions on identity is what gets people in trouble.

Hoops – I hope your bball skills are better than your investigative skills (weak sauce). I'm not Jon. We may have a common last name but that's it. And never call out an active player on a post where you don't know it's them. That's just bad karma. Knowing Jon's personality, he's way above a stunt like posting here on another player. Shame on you.

For the record, I'm a UST grad and donate to the athletic program every year. I'm embarrassed as an alum when I see a player go after another like Archer did, even in the heat of battle. No call for it. Fritz must not have seen it since Archer stayed in the game. Knowing Fritz, if he had Archer would have gotten some bench time.

I like UST defense. They play in your face, baseline to baseline D. That's why there at the top on what was expected to be a down year.

For the Auggies, can't help but wonder where they'd be if Krum was still there. It might not have been such a slow start.

The Aug – Cord game is make or break for the Dawgs. At 10-10 they would be leaving their fate to the tie-breaker.

If you're a UST grad then why is your name Dawg-Dude?

C-Mob, I loved the recap of your Valentine's Day. We should do a 3-way call and you can listen in while I ask if she likes you. When are you heading to the Windy City?

Ah, we do have the same last name......   ya' gotta back yer kin.    ;D

They basically corroborated the description of the incident that the now dearly departed Dawg-Dude provided. Oops, I guess he's back – welcome back.  ;D

Maybe I should have used "Magicman" for a post name, now you see me, now don't. 8)

I don't have a dog in this fight, but Dawg-Dude you may want to take your own advice. Intent is an awfully hard thing to prove. ;)

As for Archer, it's the intent to injury another player that needs to be called out. The reference to other comments just proves it's his style. The MIAC has more class than that.

Touché. But I call 'em like I see 'em. I was an eye witness, since it happened right in front of me  :o. I think I'm still 20/20 ???. + the reaction from the crowd spoke volumes.   :-\
