Just had to stop by to say WAY TO GO, VCU RAMS!!!!

Congrats to R-MC coaching alum Rhoades --- can surely see his inlfuence in the Rams' defense.  Especially today!

GO JACKETS!!!!

Do you think he might be VCU's head coach next year, if Shaka Smart gets a better offer?

A friend of mine out here in St. Louis who is a University of Missouri grad says Mizzou fans want Shaka Smart to come to Mizzou and bring his staff with him to replace Mike Anderson who just left to Mizzou for the Arkansas job.
Matt Painter of Purdue is seriously considering the job. Going to meet with Missouri soon to get a feel for how committed the school is to the basketball program. Might just be a ploy to get more money from Purdue, but if Purdue doesn't pony up the $$$ I would not be the least bit surprised if Painter goes to Missouri over $$$.

Shaka is saying all the right things at this point, that he cant see himself leaving or having to tell his players that he is leaving after such a special run....but there are also rumors of NC State having interest in him, and coupled with the Missouri rumors, VCU would certainly have to pony up some coin to keep him...would be very interesting to see what happens should Shaka take a Big 12 or ACC job...knowing Rhoades, his ambition is certainly not to be an asst for too long, and he is certainly an integral part of every game plan for VCU and the way they defend.

With roots in Richmond from RMC days, and his ability to recruit locally in the Richmond Metro area, as well as his ties and recruiting links to PA and NJ, VCU would be luck to get Mike, should they be in the market for a coach...for now I would say they are enjoying the run, and consider this a "good problem"

Just a quick note about a few former Jackets still dancing in the D1 tourney...Former RMC head coach Mike Rhoades (VCU Assistant), Tim Lawrence '10 (VCU Grad Asst), and Jamal Brunt '03 and former RMC Assistant to Rhoades (currently Richmond Assistant Coach)...crazy to think they could meet in the Elite 8 if both win in the Sweet 16!  Great job guys, keep "Macon" us proud!  ;)

Cant speak on the specific criteria, but I think i remember in my days a semi-finalist making it on occasion...I think if you pigeon hole it and make it 3 from one team and 2 from the other, you eliminate teh possibility to reward a great 2 game performance...or possibly 3 game performance with a loss in the semis, considering the new format.

Just wanted to put a quick note in as i haven't had much opportunity to post this year, but RMC is a dangerous team, and they have the formula to make a deep NCAA run like they did last year.  It starts with their senior leadership, then you look at their depth on both the perimeter and in the post (particularly with Giggetts coming on of late), and couple that with the defense they play...throw in a couple home games and some timely shooting, and you never know what could happen!

Great season for this group, and it is great to see the younger guys starting to "get it" coming down the stretch...must remember from this point on, it is win or go home, and it is IMPERATIVE that they play one game at a time, and continue to defend like madmen!

Keep it up jackets, we are all proud and look forward to next weekend!

They will definitely be tested early and often, but that is what builds character, and this group has certainly played in plenty of big games, and there is no doubt that Coach Davis and Co will be well prepared and meet those challenges...you have to figure if they make their way through the early portion of the schedule with success they will poised to make a nice run in a fairly deep ODAC...good to get some of those tough ones out of the way early, and they can certainly cement a high ranking come 2011 with a good showing!  Monday cant get here quick enough!  Ready to get going!  Go Jackets!

Jackets lose a tough one to American 61-55...video feed for me was very spotty, so I don't have too much detail yet, but they got down by 9 or 10 late, and hit some 3s to cut it it 4, and then it came down to FT's...hopefully a game they can learn from once they look at tape, but I am sure the jackets aren't happy with a loss in a close game like that...

Way to grind it out Jackets!  Stuck with it, and when they needed to have the stops at the end, and the FT's for that matter, they were able to do it...EMU is something else in transition, and even on makes, they get the ball in the frontcourt quick!  That said, the jackets had control of the game after clawing back from down 9 early in the 2nd half, only to relinquish their 6 pt lead and make this a lot more interesting than it needed to be.  We need to sure up the glass, as we gave up a lot 2nd and 3rd chances, and way too many offensive rebounds.

The game was extremely physical, and that plays to the Jackets favor in the paint, they just need to cut down on the fouls and hit the glass hard.  Converting FT's would help too, but again, Danny Jones making 2 to ice it with under a second left, and Eric Pugh made some huge plays down the stretch for this team tonight as well!

Let's finish this tomorrow Jackets and hit the NCAAs on a nice roll!

Watched the game on the web, and, for the record, the stats still won't come up, but this game was a complete woodshed job, all the way around...starting with the alley-oop to Jordan Brown off the opening tip, to the 19-2 start.   The Tigers just never seemed into it, and were never able to knock down shots or get stops, in order to stop the bleeding.  The Jackets on the other hand, were knocking down threes, and working their offense with patience to find the right shot for 28-32 mnutes of this game...and they had to have handily outrebounded the Tigers (can't see stats yet, so this is speculation).  I watched the Jackets play about 5 times this year, and it is easily the best all around effort I have seen from them, and Marty Bridges and Andrew (Stubby) Price agreed with the radio call, they dominated the boards, and were clearly more prepared for this game than the Tigers were.

On to EMU, which will be a different challenge, but the Jackets definitely owe them one after they took a 30 pt loos on the chin as the #1 team in the land from the Royals. Should be a great game, and hopefully the Jackets are starting to peak at the right time, and this is the beginning of something special for RMC!

GO Jackets!!

Now thats a whupping!!

A whupping indeed!!  I could not get in to the video stream of the game, but watched the "live stats" on the web, trying to believe the Jackets could pull out of that deficit as the clock continued to tick, and the margin got bigger...looks like the turnover bug finally bit the Jackets, as they had a chance to cut into the EMU lead early in the 2nd half, but gave the ball away on several possessions and EMU took adavantage with their athletes and thumped the Jackets and never let up.  I wish I had seen the game and could provide some insight as to what happened with the Jackets, but all I can go off of is the boxscore...too many turnovers, missed free throws, and untimely fouls.

Trying to take a positive from such a beatdown is hard, but I would bet Coach Davis finds a way, be it easy or hard, for the Jackets to rebound from this loss, and hopefully find a way to better take care of the ball.  The good thing is that the target of being #1 is off their back...now they can focus on getting better, and beating the rest of the teams on their schedule.  Rankings should see RMC fall a good bit, but there is a lot of season left, and they are young, resilient kids, that will learn from their mistakes, and Coach Davis loves a challenge, and will find the way to get this team ready for the rest of the ODAC season and into the post-season.

Go Jackets!

What a GAME!  Haven't seen Crenshaw rocking like that in a while...  Kudos to Williams for sticking to their game plan for the first 30 minutes of the game, but the Jackets would not give up.

Some of the best basketball players in DIII were on the court tonight - for them #'s 31, 44, 42 (!) 21 and 14.  For us Danny Jones, Brandon Braxton, Calvin Croskey, Eric Pugh, and Jordan Brown-- with some really clutch blocking in the last few minutes of the game-- really stood out.

Bottom line, Danny Jones (MVP) played so well at both offense & defense.  We were so proud of the guys to see them so far down for so long (Williams led almost the entire game) and just keep chipping away to get the win by a close 5.

The Jackets are VERY WELL COACHED.  Let's give the staff a hand - you can see the influence of the old and new regimes on this team!  10-0 looks great to us... wonder if we will finally get more than a mention in our local Richmond paper?  Probably not.  Probably would get a lot more press if we had lost.

GO JACKETS!

P.S.  Congrats to Guilford, VWC & EMU  in the latest polling.  The ODAC is looking GREAT!

Just checking in from RMC tonight and want to piggy back on 2RMC's comment...

Danny Jones was a flat out BEAST tonight!!!  We have talked in the past about needing a go-to guy for this team, and tonight, he was definitely our guy!  Both ends of the floor, but particularly on O.  He absolutely demanded the ball tonight, and he single handedly kept them in the game in the first half.

Just needed to get that out of the way, because he was ridiculous, and I like his game the more I see him play.  He is a warrior, and has confidence against anybody he steps on the court against. Most notably, he is coming the bench for the Jackets, and providing a much needed spark in just about every game.

Back to the game...Jackets were  so protective against the 3 in the first, that they did not play any help in the lane, and got burned A LOT in the first half...Williams may not look lie a great team physically, but they have some guys that flat out-played us for 30-35 minutes tonight!  To RMC's credit, they chipped away, little by little, and got a couple of momentum changing calls in the 2nd half, but the bottom line is, they made plays down the stretch, and made FT's when they had to, to win the game.

My personal thoughts are that RMC showed a toughness and resolve with their backs against the walls, and their key guys made some HUGE plays down the stretch.  Jordan Brown and Kevin Voelkel may not always have pretty lines in the box score, but they are the glue of that team, and the heart and soul of that team's defense.  KV was in foul trouble all night, but made his way onto the floor when they needed stops down the stretch, and JB comes up with an enormous pinned shot on the backboard in the last 3 mins to help put it away!

Much kudos to the coaching staff and to these young men, who fought and stayed tough and stuck to their game plan, even when down 16in the second half!    Crenshaw was rocking tonight, especially for no students being on campus, and I think these guys will learn a lot from this game, and hopefully build on it,  #1 target on their back or not.  ODAC schedules are grueling, and often build championship caliber teams...only time will tell what this Jacket squad is made of, but they are playing at very high level so far!

To continued success in 2010!  GO JACKETS!!

DC was probably the most talented player on RMC...that being said you could tell there was trouble in paradise when he was not on the floor at the end of the Wooster game.  Playing time???....Not starting???....I guess he didn't buy in to the system...this will be interesting to follow.

Not to mince words, FanJacket, but probably not.  We covered DC on this board two years ago or so.  The behavior does not appear to have changed.  Of course, all we can do is speculate, but after this amount of time, it's not too difficult to connect the dots. Unfortunately.

I don't know DC personally, but I know "of" him quite a bit, through several intimate sources within the school and program, and it has long been known that this could and probably would happen, based on the past...he has been great and times, and a complete virus at times...a total frontrunner that plays hard when he is playing well and getting touches, but disappears and hurts the team when things don't go his way.

Coach Rhoades had gave him more than one shot, and he let him down several times by not holding up his end of the bargain, and I think maybe Coach Davis thought with some work and a change in regime, maybe DC could come back for a successful senior year and what would have been a great story, but it didn't work out.

Best of luck to him, but I think this may eventually become an "addition by subtraction" move for the Jackets and Coach Davis.

I will go ahead and kick off my season of posting a little late, but in agreement with donho and the others that it's a nice start for the Jackets, and certainly something to be excited about, especially with a new coach at the helm, but nothing more at this point.  This team has some really nice pieces in place, and Coach Davis has done a great job of finding a solid 10-11 man rotation to this point, and I think they have done a good, but not great job so far.

I have only seen them play once this season, against Randolph, and that was certainly not an impressive win, as they almost let a 25 point lead go completely down the drain with a porous 2nd half D, and some extremely sloppy play down the stretch, and a lack of killer instinct to put a lesser team away.  In a very competitive ODAC this year, they will need that mentality to put some teams away.

I do believe they have some quality wins so far, and when they shoot the ball well, they have proven to be as effective as anyone so far, but it is still early.

My personal thoughts are that they need to take much better care of the ball in transition, and continue to find ways to get their big men involved to open up the perimeter play...Brandon Braxton and Danny Jones are confidence players and need to continue to play well inside for the success to continue.

As for the team being tired, I can all but assure you, they were not.  They are one of the most conditioned programs in the country, and playing back to back nights is not something that would tire them, maybe with a 6 or 7 man rotation, but that is not the case here.  I am confident that they will work out many of the kinks over the break, and come back a much sharper team after the holidays and be prepared for the tough ODAC schedule that lies ahead!

Sorry to be so late to the party, no access to internet since Friday...I was at the King's game, and have to agree, the running game is just not the same, but that is not all that looks different this year for the Jackets.  Without question, the 5 and 6 yd runs of Zak Thornton are 2 and 3 yd runs for Mathews, with virtually the same O-Line, but I saw a different defense Saturday and that is what bothered me most.  The team's of years recent were relentless, and went after people making tackles...the team I saw last weekend was not trying to hit people and knock them back, they were trying to stop people from running them over...merely making an effort to push them to the ground and slow progress, almost conceding yardage to an extent, and trying to limit what they gave up, rather than be the agressors and dictate what the offense was allowed to do.

All that said, the offense is a work in progress, with some young wr's and new personnel being worked into the fold with the loss of Braner and Thornton, and that may take a little time, but I think before we start writing off the season completely, we need to see a little bit more of a sample to analyze.

I think the missed FG changed the game in the first half and breathed a little life back into King's after letting the RMC offense march down on their first possession for a score, and giving up a FG shortly after, and they began playing with more confidence.  They would have scored again before half without the INT by Macon, deep in their own territory, that time expired on, during the attempted runback...

Sorry for the lengthy post, and I will try to bring some insight from Saturday's game in Baltimore, early next week...Go Jackets!

Jacketlawyer, non-taken.  I just wish I was wrong.

I wish I was wrong too...but I am fairly confident it is a done deal.  Pedro is not one to play favorites, and apparently these two thought they were above the rest of the TEAM during some off season activities.  Don't be surprised to see either one of them surface somewhere else in the league...Word is that HSC was contacted pretty soon after, by both, as much as I hate to type that...also rumored that Zak was given the option to stay with a 2 game suspension but turned it down...true colors shining through it appears.

may be of some interest to most on the board (or at least RMC fans) to know that there is a very reliable source at the college telling me that Zak Thornton and Brandon Braner have been asked to leave the program at RMC, citing attitude problems.  no definite comfirmation yet, but something to get the boards buzzing as we move in to the summer.
