Off-season news -- Nice column in today's Pioneer Press about retiring Gustie tennis coach Steve Wilkinson.  In national tennis circles he's respected every bit as much as UST's Steve Fritz, or SJU's John Gagliardi.  Wilkinson going out on top

If this has been discussed previously, I apologize, but the word on the street is that Wilkinson has cancer, which forced him to retire, and is literally fighting for his life.

Anyone heard the same or have any other updates?

anyone goin to any high school games this week...state starts up on wednesday next week...should be good times

I heard the good shooting guard from Henry Sibley is on crutches; he didn't play Tuesday night, but don't know if he'll be ready for the Tartan game or not.

Tartan can't board with the Henry Sibley boys, so wouldn't be surprised if Klingsporn goes 5 out and holds the ball to feature more one-on-one situations. He made sure the Section rankings were set so his first two opponents  didn't have any size, so he "rationalized" that Cretin and Stillwater should be ranked as such that they were in oppostie brackets of him and that Henry Sibley had to beat them both....which they did handily. Klinger's quite the politician when he wants things done his way!!

Who knows? If Hernandez doesn't play, maybe Tartan pulls an upset! Boy the media would love to see that so they could listen to him flap his tongue for hours upon hours on how much he knows and how little everyone else does.  ::)

I see Tech beat Buffalo by one in the section finals after being down by 13 at half time.

Ok, I know, I'll get in trouble now as this isn't a HS board.  ;)

I guess I was expecting more from the Pointers. I thought El-Amin and Beamish both played especially poorly...and they weren't even being guarded by the "good" Tommie defenders.

Their best player might have been Krull, who didn't play enough IMO. He killed Viau on three straight possessions in the second half to give UWSP the lead...and then sat for the next 6 minutes. That's the second year in a row that I've questioned UWSP's playing time in the national tournament. Has this been a consistent complaint, I wonder? Any WIAC posters out there who'd care to comment?

Anyway, got a another bit up about the win.

Willy, I'd actually give a little more credit to the Tommies' D rather than simply saying that those guys and Rorvedt (who was a non-factor if you want to add him as well) played poorly.  I saw the Tommies bellying up on defense and moving their feet constantly, and when their man got a step on them, there was a help defender there instantly.  Just outstanding half court defense IMHO.  There were a couple of possessions when Krull broke down the defense on the left side and drove to the hoop.  He made a couple of nice moves each time.  Are you sure it was Viau that he beat on each occasion?  You may be right, but I thought that at least twice that it was Peltier or someone else he beat, and that Fritz then subbed out for that person.

As close as the game was and as good as Point is, the Tommies had the lead for most of the game and had Point chasing them.  I thought that the margin of victory could have been greater had the Tommies converted about 4 or 5 chippy baskets that they missed.  In any event, just a great game for those that like good, hard nosed defense.

I  agree with you Nites. I thought it was a great game, not boring or ugly at all.

The game had considerably more "action" to it than the final score would  indicate.

Just saw the score online. It's obvious by picking BU in an upset that I have no clue about picking games  correctly.

A friend just emailed me and said the game was physical and that Madson got pretty frustrated. How did the Laugen kid play? BU has quite a bit of experience at guard, but by the sounds of it, that's a hefty number of turnovers.

Well, that's good for the Tommies.....here's hoping they go deep in the tourney, if not all the way to Salem!

Anybody know who's wearing the stripes tonight?

Yorky? ha ha ha

Can you spell UPSET?

BU 76  UST 72;  BU's lost something like 11 straight to the Tommies? You know it's going to end sometime.

Now, having  said that, it also would not surprise me if the Tommies won by 10-12.

It'll be jumping at the Shoe tonight! What time will people have to get there to get a seat? Being it's sold out and no ticket, I can't go, but was curious. That's a small gym for a game this big.

Putting a different slant on the discussion and having observed GAC a few times this year, I will say this: "The good news for the Gusties is they have alot of players coming back next year."

However, "The bad news for the Gusites is they have alot of players coming back next year."

I think that coaching staff better find some players if they want to be competitive for a league title, unless they're simply satisfied with being a top 6 team and making the playoffs each year.

And, regarding the BU-UST championship game, I wonder if Westie will continue to coach with both hands around his throat as he's done in the past in big games?!!

Anyone see the Tommie-Gustie game last night?

Yorkovich is probably the WORST official around. He's an arrogant, pompus little dick that makes every attempt to take over the game so he'll be noticed. He's absolutely terrible.

I'm not a GAC or UST fan, just went to watch. And also, his officiating had no affect on the game, it's just his arrogance that made me want to ring this guy's neck as he was calling every little ticky-tack foul and then calls a T on the Gustie bench "because one of the ass'ts was kneeling down and looking at him????"

I thought Combe did a fine job. Don't know the other guy.

What's with the Herman kid from SJU? He's not played in the last 3 games or so.....is he hurt or are there other factors involved? (If this has been talked about already, I will apologize.....haven't been reading much lately)

WW....what's the lack-of-talent problem at GAC? Thought Hanson was supposed to be such a great recruiter?

I noticed that Michael Much didn't make an appearance for Bethel in its win over Concordia.  He's a valuable part of the team.  Anyone know what happened and whether he'll be playing tonight?

Much quit the team. Totally fed up with Bethel coach Westlund. I think two others have quit as well......all due to a dislike for  Westlund. Guess Westy has his favorites (Madsen?) and no one else matters.

I played 2 games against Herman a year back.  He is a very solid player, and a great athlete.  Jon Derock and Herman went at each other each game and Herman held his own.  If he plays for SJU like he did in those tournaments SJU has landed a great recruit.

So one year removed from all the Bethel Buzz and no one even mentions a word about them.  I think they have improved their team from last year and could be a scary team.......or they could be the same team they were last year.

Bethel should be good with "Ball Hog-Shoot Happy" Madson back and the other guard....Laugen? His kamakazee style gets him in more trouble than he does good and they are both a couple of big time whiners.

If Moberg gets a little motivation and gets a few touches (which is difficult with Madson around) they could be real tough. But, they always find a way to cough it up and spit it out.

Todd Herman will be a fun one to watch.

My preseason POY?  Joe Scott from UST.....so there, stick that in your hat and smoke it!!

Again, UST wins it all.....conference & playoffs. (I know it's a safe pick this time of year.... but what the heck!!)

I think the NLS kids are as good or better than Barmore. Barmore's good, is long & plays pretty good 'D'; his weakness? Slow feet.

The Herman kid from NLS who transferred  from SCSU is excellent and I think will really shine in the MIAC.

Fogt really needs to have a presence underneath for the J's to make a legitimate run. They're pretty young and inexperienced, but should be very athletic.

Joe Scott had a nice game tonight in the pulley league.  He was the easily the best outside threat on the floor.

Does he have one or two years left at UST? Whatever, he should be one of the top players in the MIAC. Friend of mine saw him play in the Pulley Pro City....said he's gotten much stronger and is a superb shooter.

Hands down, UST will win another conference and playoff championship(s).

VOJ - A chance to partake in some free caf food was too much to pass up. I'll be going back in July to improve upon my 1-0 coaching record against Hanson...which is almost as impressive as CDR's unbeaten 1v1 record for his ENTIRE LIFE.

Wittwer is currently in Germany trying out for its professional league. Sounds like he'll plan to stay if he makes either of the top two divisions, but the third class would make for a tough decision since it pays jack.

In unrelated news, Wonka will be part of a prestigious round table discussion taking place over the next two days in the Cities. Bill Plaschke, Rod Strickland, Chili, Antonio Freeman and a few ESPN writers are just a few of the names that will be at the meeting. Anyone else think I'll be in a little over my head? :o

Someone saw Wittwer playing in the Star of the North games this weekend, so he must not be in Germany.
