Cru friends, Sorry things did not go your way today. There will be other, and better, days. From my McMurry War Hawk heart, congratulations on a fine season. No greater respect is earned than in the arena of a contest when two teams give their best. Further down the line, perhaps we will tee it up again in a game that means something.

On this day, this much is true. The cru oline and dline were stronger and McMurry's ability to pass the ball outside in to the wind to the hash mark to the side lines was impacted greatly by the wind. Any passes outside 15 to 20 yards past the line were knocked down when thrown to the home press box side of the field and floated away from the reciever when thrown to the other sideline. This lowered our ability to hit crossing patterns and passes to the running backs coming out of the backfield. The passing game is what we do best! Our running game is much improved from last year which brings me to UMHB's line play. Cru dline did a fine job in the trenches. McMurry is stronger than last year, did a better job on pass protection and in run blocking. The cru dline was a notch or two better. The cru oline showed why UMHB likes to run the ball. The cru oline is a notch stronger than McMurry. It was a pleasure to watch both lines work. Both team lines played to their ability to final horn. Good luck the the cru next week! One final thought, how good could #6 for UMHB be if showcased on a passing team.

Congratulations to Coach Matt Garnet, Coach Kemp, and the men of McMurry! What an effort over a three day run. It takes a lot of people stepping up to meet the challange of three good teams during seventy two hours. It takes heart and pride (lots of it) to push your way to victory. That is especially true aganist a well coached and tough UMHB squad.
Time to look ahead. McMurry will find out Monday late where we will go. Enjoy today and prepare Monday for what lies ahead.
ALACUMBA!!!

Good luck to McMurry in Friday's game aganist Mississippi College. It has been an "up and down" year for coaches Garnet and Kemp this year. Lots of new players to bring up to speed. Some games the team was quite good and sometimes, not so good. The team finished the year strongly, and with focus for their last four games. Lets keep it up for three more games!

McM had it's "A" game the last ten minutes Thursday at CTX. In this afternoon's game aganist UMHB, McM did not have an "A" game in the last ten minutes. Outside shooting was a problem all game long. No one seemed to have a good feel from outside 12 feet. McM's 21 and 30 were effective scoring in the paint and 30 was strong rebounding. At times focus seemed to be a problem as it appeared concentration lapsed. McM's 34 and 44 are improving as they receive much needed playing time. Takes time for bigs who are first year to learn the college game.
UMHB has a fine team with depth. UMHB's 23 and 34 provided excellent support off the bench. They played a lot of effective minutes in the second half.
This was a game McM could have won, but did not. A game UMHB could have lost, but would not.

McM did not have their "A" game for much of the contest. However, when it really counted, the team showed their "A" courage. That was quite true for the last 5 minutes of regulation and all of overtime. McM hit their free throws and some big shots in the overtime period. Defense was a critical part of the win. UMHB will be another strong challange on Saturday.

Mississippi College is 4 and 5 and McMurry is 5 and 4 going into this weeks contest at Clinton, Ms. Both teams like to throw the ball. Advantage here should go to MC as McM will be using their 3rd team QB. However, that statement must be tempered somewhat by the performance of the QB in the game with LC. He did a quite creditable job with the amout of reps he had, or in this case did not have. Guthry's practice time this week should narrow the odds somewhat. Running games are, more or less, equal. Comes down to defense and that great unknown factor called desire. MC wants to win at home and be 5 and 5. McM wants to close out the year at 6 and 4. Temperture at game time is projected at 74 with a light rain. Should be interesting. May the best team win. Hope they are wearing maroon and white.

I think it is bit of a reach to project McMurry football much higher than the early polls has them going in for 2010. McMurry has to get quicker, stronger, build depth, and gain valuable experience. 2009 was a surprise year for lots of us who proudly wear the colors year in and year out. We had increased expectations for the past season, but it was better. Expectations for 2010 could be a bigger step up from that. McMurry has a fine coaching staff, adminstration, and board who back the sports program as a whole. I think we are on our way. I agree with Pat in that we need to see where we are in October. This is could be the year we are increasingly competative with H-SU and UMHB and the other fine Universities.
If the sun continues to shine on our faces, and the wind is at our backs, then who can say what our hopes are for 2011.

Congratulations to LIB for a strong season. Coaches Snow and Rainbolt have to be proud of what this team achieved this season. It is my observation the team improved as the season progressed. This is certainly true this past month. Our 1,2, and 3s show promise and LIB went deep into the bench often. This meaningful plalying time will help the players mature. We need to add depth at 4 and 5 for next year. It was a good Ride! Thanks to the coaches and players. Alacumba!

Coach Holmes is a man with a high core set of values and is worthy of respect. His record at McMurry over a span of 20 years sets a high standard for those who come after, just as coach Kimbrell did before him. Coach Matt Garnett now is entrusted to carry our banner on to the field of contest. IMHO, Matt Garnett is deserving of the title, "Coach." A coach can be defined as one who trains young men for the coming contests and is a trusted friend and adviser for their life after college.
This season started with such promise and with a high degree of sucess! Then the troubles started. Four of the athletes who the coaches relied on to provide a high level of solid minutes, for whatever the reason, were not with the team after the end of the first semester. McMurry found itself seriously restricted at the 4 and 5 position. New offense and defenses had to be installed. Most importantly, the depth needed to crash the boards at both ends was not present. The team suffered a crises of confidence. When that happens, a half step of speed is lost, hesitation on the outlet pass, failure to take the shot during that brief flash when the shooter is open.
Effort continued. They played with heart. Robert Moreno, Steven Lucky, J. Hart, and others picked up their game. In the final game with ETBU, McMurry may not have won but I am most proud of the effort of the players and coaches Holmes and Garnett. ETBU was bigger, stronger, deeper, and better. McMurry led most of the game with passing, screens, and accurate 3pt. shooting. in the last 10 minutes of the contest, ETBU strength and depth in the paint made the difference. McMurry continued to play hard, on offense and defense. They did not quit. McMurry team and coaches were playing as hard as they could to the final seconds.
McMurry did not win on the scoreboard, but my respect for these coaches and players is now deeper.

I watched with great interest the Trinity and McMurry game last evening in Abilene. This season brought enhanced interest to me as the hiring of Hal Mumme and staff is a departure from the ways of prior times. I commend all those involved in the unlifting changes now underway.
Trinity is a veteran and seasoned ballclub. Good size and speed, well coached. Ranked 26th as I am told. McMurry was ranked well done in the 100s. What I saw assures me better days are ahead. QB position in now in the hands of an all conference outfielder from the baseball team. He has a good, much better than good, arm. McM ran the ball maybe 10 times in the game. Oline did a good job blocking and TU sent lots of folks, including safeties during the second half. Receivers, generally, did a good job of catching the ball. Showed speed and an ability to run after the catch. Defense appears to be a little behind the offense. First time to ever see the 3-3-5. May take some time for the players to grasp it's dos and don'ts. Again, team speed on defense appears much improved.
The staff will have the weekend to study the last game. It will be interesting to see the improvement in the next week of practice. It is said, a team can improve most between the first and second game. It takes time for new players to learn this new offense and new defense.
"Air Raid, take cover." The ball is going up, a lot, this year!

Ralph, I viewed the AP tape of Mike Flynt's playing for Sul Ross. It crossed my mind that, back in the day, you ran cross country for McMurry and played a little deep snapper at one time. We are fairly well stocked at receiver, but snapping on punts, extra points, and field goals.........
Keith and Josh would come back to see your first game and go to Joe Allen"s BBQ. I do not know which event they would think the most important.
