Messages - TearDrop

It has been quite some time since I actually contributed to the board so due to the incredible boredom from working on a Sunday night, I thought I would make a return to the D3 board. First I would just like to say Congratulations to the Tommies even if it does pain me to do it!

Second, I might try to stir up a little conversation.... Looking at how things have turned out for my Redbirds, would it be safe to say that they could quite possibly go WINLESS  :( in the 2011-2012 season?? Again, it pains me to say but I am only trying to be realistic here. With the loss of Wright and Holland to graduation and now losing Palmer to family matters.... it seems the pantry is pretty bare. I hope that Coach Landrum can make some serious waves in the 2011 recruiting class

I have no dog in this fight and have no idea what may have transpired at the Shoe, but the loaded gun post was not called for.

Hey I have an idea... Lets make a big deal about nothing! Oh wait... no that doesnt sound like a good idea.

Looks like the youngest of the three headed monster decided to put on a show and fly the birds to victory last night! His stat line was 37 pts and 11 boards. I think the most impressive part of this is that he did his scoring VERY efficiently on 10 of 12 shooting with 4 three pointers! Congrats to the young man. I hope that this is the year that the RedBirds can get over the hump and actually crack the playoffs for the first time in years. I fear that this could be their last year to do so for a while again as they lose Wright and Holland.

Conference play begins on Wednesday night.  Based on what I've seen, read & watched, this could really be a topsy-turvy year in the MIAC.  Other than say Bethel & Macalester, every other team can claim they have a shot at the playoffs. Even Bethel might be thinking they can turn things around.  I realize MAC is 0-3, but if the coaches can keep their spirits up, they could be a dangerous spoiler.

Who all is in for conference pick-ems?

You can count me in for pick'em. Sorry I can not run it this year. I just dont have the time.

TD - are you running conference pickems this year?
On opening night of the hoops season, here's what I see:

SCSU big over the Jays
STO decisively over Bethany Lutheran
SMU continues MIAC domination of the UMAC's Crown College
Buena Vista over GAC

Honestly I do not have time to total the standings and stuff but would love to participate!

Not normally my way of doing things as I do not like to post about stuff that I have simply heard about and not seen for myself but a buddy of mine that lives in Sioux Falls caught the Augustana/Gustie exhibition game a few days ago and the report was not good for the a Gustie fans.

Augustana is a very well respected D2 program and from what I have heard is in good position to make a deep National Tourney run so it is expected that they would handle the Gusties but it sounds like they struggled to get anything at all accomplished. It may be a long year for them...

On a different note, I am becoming increasingly impatiant at my Birds refusal to post their 2010-2011 roster! I know that they still have the most talented player in the league with Mr. Wright but I am curious as to if the rumors  that I have heard about them not adding one player to help him are true.

A few days in to practice and the board is still relatively quiet!! I am as guilty as anyone but come on! How am I supposed to pretend to look busy while I sit at my desk at work??   ;D

Not much to report about the RedBirds as I have not been up to campus in a while but I have heard from more than one person that they did not add 1 new recruit for this season. I guess they felt like they were good enough.  ???

Macalester recruiting commitment...

Sounds like a decent pick up for Mac but maybe they should have gotten the other guy  ;)

Sounds like Olaf and Hamline will both be visiting Greece in May, though they'll do so one week apart. Is anyone else taking a team trip this summer?

I believe that St Johns is heading somewhere. Not 100% sure but I think the destination is Italy.

As I've done in previous years, I've listed the rosters for the upcoming HS All-Star games. If I'm aware of college choices for any of the players, I've listed them.  As we go through the spring, we can use this list as a master list & add players & college choices.  Anyone can feel free to add to them as we go along.  Any D3 players, highlight & list them in bold & blue.  So far, I'm not aware of any MIAC commitments.

Looking over the state tournament brackets for this upcoming week I see that former SMU coach Mike Trewick has had a nice season with St Cloud Tech and a state tourney appearance. I do not know a ton about MN high school basketball but does anyone know what their chances are? Can Trewick go from bottom of the barrel SMU to a state title??

Last night was a much needed victory for the Birds! From what I hear they jumped out to an early lead and the trio of Palmer, Holland and Wright were pretty much unstoppable. Looking at the SMU article on the game the three of those guys scored 64 of the 78 points. They did a good job of not settling for as many 3 pt attempts which sometimes I think hinders their abilities.  If Palmer is not the FY player of the year I would be shocked. It seems that the Cardinals have a very talented young player and I would expect big things out of him next season and with Wright and Holland being seniors I will make a very early prediction that next season SMU will be a top 3 team in the league. I am excited to see the things that Coach Landrum is doing in Winona and am interested to see what kind of recruits they can keep getting in!! GO BIRDS

Talking to some old friends from SMU I heard a rumor that Brensley Haywood was playing basketball over sea's. After doing a bit of digging it appears to be true. Good for him! I hope that his post collegiate experience is better than the one he had at SMU.

Happy New Year All!!

Pickems contestants -

I'm filling in until the manhunt is called off & we've found Teardrop. Post your picks on the pickems board before the games start tomorrow afternoon.

TD - we need you back on the board talking smack about the Redbirds and running the pickems!!!   :P ;D ;D

In the meantime, back to the sleep inducing Sugar Bowl...

I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!! And just in time for my birds to knock off the Johnnies who always seems to whine and complain about that long trip down to Winona and blame that on why they cannot win down south!! GO REDBIRDS!!!

I had some time last night to peruse through the MIAC stats at this early juncture and thought I would offer a few observations.

-Carl Hipp is leading the league in points - 20.8, rebounds -11.8, and blocks -2.8 per game.  Even more impressive is the fact that Mr. Hipp's points don't include a single three pointer.  Could it be that a Piper is in the early lead for MVP ???  *The other strong candidate appears to be Aaron Burtzel.

-Tyler Nicolai is leading the Tommies in scoring and truthfully it's not even close.  Anyone see this coming  ???

-SMU's backcourt of Wright and Holland are both averaging over 35min/gm.  Does anyone else see them tiring over the long term  ???

I see where some might think that this could be a concern but if anyone in the league is used to these kinds of minutes it would have to be these two. They have pretty much been shouldering the team since day 1 of their collegiate careers!
