Kingsmen 4 would never submit false information so you can rely on what he posts !
This would be a big story somewhere, and I can't find any.  When did this all happen?
I'm sure Pat or Keith are checking.

Unfortunately, it is true.  Andy passed away from a heart attack on Monday while working out on a treadmill in Florida.  I have seen only one small blurb on scout.com from a Seattle station KJR reporting it, but I know several former Oxy players and good friends of Andy who are in absolute shock and mourning.  More details will probably surface shortly.

Sorry to hear of the Oxy loss (or beating by Redlands).  I guess the streak had to end sooner or later, but hopefully both the winners and losers can be humble.

On a brighter note for Oxy fans - including me :) - QB Justin Goltz Oxy '09, has signed a contract to finish the CFL season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where he also has been offered a spot for the 2011 season.

I haven't posted in a while, but be assured I still read and enjoy most of the posts.

Congrats to the Tigers on their season opening win. Enjoyed meeting Oxyfan. But, in this one person's opinion, either Oxy isn't as good as advertised or Menlo is pretty good. Defensively anyway. Although neither team really impressed me. Menlo had just two decent plays from scrimmage, a run by Souza and a pass play in the second half. Most of Oxy's offense came through the air, and it still wasn't a whole lot. They had one 53 yd throw and catch for a TD (which accounted for about a quarter of all their passing yardage) and an interception return for a TD. The score at the half was 3-0 Oxy. Looking forward to seeing the Cats against the Tigers in two weeks and meeting more of the OXy faithful.

Oxy lost its starting QB and 4 of its 5 starting offensive linemen to graduation, so one could question their offensive experience.  The defense returns a number of its playoff players, so it should be an interesting season.  Nice win Tigers and get ready for those guys from Oregon in two weeks!!

2009 Detroit Lions Transcripts
HEAD COACH JIM SCHWARTZ -- MAY 3, 2009

• On whether there has been a position group to exceed his expectations
"Probably the quarterbacks were further along than a lot of the other positions. We were able to get a lot of seven-on-seven snaps. Our numbers were down on the offensive line and defensive line. We didn't do a whole lot of team periods, but we threw a lot of concepts at them with the passing game and I think that those guys were probably a little further along than the wide receivers, running backs and the rest of the offense, but probably there."
On whether QB Justin Goltz has a shot at training camp
"Oh, yeah. I don't think he was out of place. I mean, I've been around a lot of NFL training camps and you worry about a guy when he's coming from a lower level of competition like Occidental, but I think he came in and he did well out here. He's not out of place in an NFL training camp for sure."
•On if any tryout players stand out
"Yeah, you know, there's probably a couple that we'd like to get under contract. I don't want to go too far there because there's other people that are going to be in competition to sign some of those guys. But it was well worth it. Like I said, we had objectives for those guys of improving every day. I said, 'Don't worry about making the team; don't worry about getting signed. Worry about getting better. And if you do those things and do it on a daily basis, the other things will take care of themselves.' I was impressed with the way they work. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there like that. To put yourself out; to go through those drills, to go through a weekend and to have somebody judge you – scouts, players, coaches – all those different things. That's a tough position to be in. We appreciate their effort and our hats off to them. They did a good job; we wouldn't have been able to get through practices and get as far along without those guys."

Andy Collins update:

Andy Collins recorded 9 total touchdowns, including 4 rushing, but it was not enough as the Central Valley Coyotes were able to rally past the Stockton Lightning 65-58 Saturday night at Stockton Arena.  For the game Collins was 17 for 30 passing for 5 TDs and 2 INTs, and rushed for 58 net yards on 9 carries with 4 TDs, a new Lightning record.

More good news on former Oxy quarterbacks:  2008 SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Justin Goltz, has been invited to the Detroit Lions rookie camp on May 1-3, 2009!!

Speaking about Pavlovian, I feel now is the appropriate time to mention that I hear Redands has an excellent Dodgeball class.    ;) :D ;D

Redlands Football: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodging Linfield since 2003.  :D

I did hear we tried to hook up with the Dawgs once again but I guess that a mid-level ASC team offered Maynard all he could eat ribs if they made the trip out to Texas and he couldn't say no.

Yep, Redlands is responsible for Linfields inability to get it done the last three years.

Never said that but I would like to trade our game with the Division II we play every year with a team we have a tradition of clam slamming.

I didn't hear any Linfield fans complaining about that schedule in 2004/2005. As matter of fact is was all trash talk about how great Linfield was and that they could and would play and beat anybody. My, how that tune sure has changed.

No, I actually was one Wildcat that saw typing/saying to dump WOU all the way back in 2004.  It was only a matter time before WOU started to take advantage of the DII status and as our defending national champion will tell you that there is a clear difference between the two divisions.  I have no shame in saying in it does no good to play WOU anymore...it didn't back in 04/05 either.

Keep dreaming about your Selway scenario...I would love to say the same thing about Boehme/Linfield too but that wasn't our reality this year so leave that argument at home.

And I bet the dropoff in play from your #1 and #2 was not as drastic as it was at Redlands. It was a big part in Redlands losing both games this year.

RFB - With all due respect, injuries to key players are a part of the game.  Redlands lost to Oxy and Cal Lu without Selway, but I didn't hear much complaining about Smith as their QB when they were blowing away their other opponents.  Certainly, real time playing experience helps - especially at QB - but the bottom line is that there can always be "ifs" and "buts" with injuries.  For example, Oxy may have been a totally different team last year in its games against Cal Lu and Whittier if it had had its two top running backs, its top defensive lineman and its top linebacker, all of whom were out with injuries very early in the season.  In this year's Redlands v Oxy game, IMHO, I'm not sure if Selway would have made a big difference in the outcome.  Oxy's defense pressured the QB all night, and he really had little chance to do anything.  Also, Oxy arguably "should have" scored a couple more TDs when it was inside Redland's 5 yard line.  I am not taking anything away from your team, but unfortunately, injuries to key players happen all the time and sometimes it's hard for teams to adjust - just ask the New England Patriots.  :)

Whitewater has only beat two teams with a winning record this season....and of course lost to UWSP who lost to Wartburg this weekend...Wartburg had to go into OT their final regular season game to beat Dubuque an 0-10 team.....Hmmmm???

Willamette has beat four teams with winning records this season...and in addition has beat Southern Oregon who handed Mary Hardin Baylor their only loss 40-28....Hmmmm?

Also Whitewater only beat a 5-5 Stout team 17-10....(as KitchenSink says...."the Warhawks were a little lucky to escape that one with a win") Hmmm?

Willamette's first round game was theoritically a TKO before half time....IMO....Hmmmm?

I don't know anything about UW-WW's team this year, but don't get TOO carried away with Willamette's first round victory.  WU basically played a flawless game last weekend and Oxy did not, but IMHO it was hardly a TKO at halftime.  Certainly congratulations and kudos are due for a nice win by the Bearcats, but I don't think anyone who saw the game would honestly say that it wasn't competitive - even with the "cushion" of WU's second quarter scoring.  The first and third quarters were tightly fought and the 4th quarter was a shootout.  I know, only the eventual score matters, but I thought your humble opinion needed a response.  ;)

Good luck to the Bearcats going forward.  If Oxy had to lose, I'd rather it be to another West coast team (even though the NCAA is still screwed up with those geographical first round pairings - which is a dead horse I have no intention of reviving).

Personally, I'd much rather see Oxy's 2nd and 3rd string defense get looks against Caron than Pomona's backups . . . and did you look at Pomona's sideline . . . how many players suited up . . . maybe 40-45?

I think that Tiger backups gain a lot more from going up against the best Pomona has to offer at this stage of the game.

Tooth, your point is a good one for the benefit of Oxy's non-starters, but I don't think POMONA'S coach was worried about giving the Oxy players on the field at that time the best competition they could get from Pomona.  Certainly by sometime in the 4th quarter, defeat was inevitable for Pomona.  When you only have 44-45 players on your roster and the game has been decided, why not save your starters from possible injury and give the back-ups who come to practice every day the chance to play, especially in a big rivalry game - instead of giving your statistically league leading passer even more chances to throw to your statistically league leading receiver?  In my four years of watching Oxy football, I just think the Oxy coaching staff would have handled the situation differently if it had been in Pomona's position, that's all.

Pomona item in the "Campus Life 5.0" column in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin:

QuotePomona-Pitzer sophomore quarterback Jacob Caron put on quite a show, although the Sagehens lost to unbeaten Occidental 64-33 on Saturday.

Caron completed 38 of 63 passes for a school-record 507 yards, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another. He had 16 completions to Kevin Kelley for 273 yards and 14 to R.J. Maki for 159 yards.

"As good as it was, it could have been better," Jacob's father and Pitzer coach Roger Caron said. "He missed a couple of reads and there were a couple throws he'd like to have back."

In eight games Caron has completed 58.7 percent of his passes for 2,359 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had a game earlier this season in which he ran for five scores and threw for two more but this one came against a nationally ranked foe.

The Sagehens host neighborhood foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 1 p.m. Saturday in the annual Peace Pipe showdown.

Here are a few comparative stats (rank):

Scoring offense: Pomona 27.8 (4), Claremont 17.8 (6)
Scoring defense: Claremont 25.8 (4), Pomona 48.0 (7)
Pass offense: Pomona 332.2 (1), Claremont 95.6 (7)
Pass defense: Claremont 215.2 (3), Pomona 276.0 (7)
Rushing offense: Claremont 103.4 (5), Pomona 54.6 (7)
Rushing defense: Claremont 129.8 (4), Pomona 180.6 (7)
Total offense: Pomona 386.8 (3), Claremont 198.8 (7)
Total defense: Claremont 345.0 (4), Pomona 456.6 (7)
Pass efficiency: Pomona 128.6 (2), Claremont 92.4 (7)
Pass efficiency defense: Claremont 108.8 (3), Pomona 157.0 (7)

Pomona can score while Claremont doesn't score, but Pomona can't stop anyone from scoring. Pomona can pass but can't defend the pass. Claremont can run and Pomona can't stop the run. Pomona has tons of offense but gives up tons of offense. That should be a wild game.

OxyBob

IMHO, there was some "stat padding" by Coach Caron for his QB son in the Oxy game.  After the 2nd quarter, the game was never seriously within reach for Pomona.  While I understand it's a rivalry game for the Drum, I also thought it was the perfect situation when the game was decided for Pomona's coach to give his other freshman QB some real game experience, especially when Oxy's second and third string defense played from the middle of the 3rd quarter on.  I even think Pomona called time out with something like 9 seconds left to give the first string QB another 5 yard throw to the end zone when the score was 64-26.  I know Oxy's defense shut down the run, and I certainly don't expect a player or team to give up, but 63 passing attempts and 500+ yards when the game is over at half?!  Others may disagree, but that's my opinion.

I just heard 31-0 Oxy in the 2nd Quarter.  No other details.

Gosh, with depth and competition at UR like that, it looks like my kid made a good choice to go somewhere else and only had to wait two years behind some coach's "pet" QB named Collins....  ;)

Seriously, a lot of hot shot kids from high school have no clue how difficult and how much hard work it is to make a legitimate move to the next level.  For the most part, these kids were the best players on their high school teams, but the competition and required dedication is much greater.  I have no idea what was or wasn't said to any potential player at any school (and I'm sure the players hear what they want to hear), but their success or failure (however one defines that) is largely up to them - and no one else.  I  have an uncle who never played a down at the University of Michigan many years ago, but he still relishes the experience as priceless.  There are a lot of reasons why players don't succeed beyond high school, and I'm sure we all have our stories of "can't miss" players who didn't do squat at the next level.  As a sad follower of the Detroit Lions, I certainly understand how that works with college draft picks....

28-0 Oxy in the 3rd.  The Oxy broadcast is now working (as is Claremont's if you want to listen).

Oxy Fan - This is my 4th year observing the SCIAC, and I've only seen a couple of other DIII games in the Midwest, but in general, I think the SCIAC offenses are pretty wide open.  As OxyBob noted, Oxy ranked 18th in the country last year in total offense, and they have most of their offensive starters returning this year.  That is fun to watch, but the defense giving up big plays (as they seem to have done since 2005) isn't....
