I don't think GVW's retirement will have any impact on recruiting either but if so, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  In being around the campus occasionally, there are a slew of kids attending Hope that were either cut or quit the program that could be brought in and compete against most MIAA teams.  These players wouldn't get them to the next level but they can certainly compete for the conference title.

M&g:  Yes, this is the time of year when recruits are making their college decision.  However, I doubt this change is going to have any significant impact on Hope's in coming class.  Considering the stable of talent that Hope has, and has historically been able to attract one will have to look hard to detect any change.  I also doubt there will be any more players dropping from the program than occurs in the normal course of events.  If one or two players change their plans to attend Hope because GVW is gone you may also get one or two guys that come because there is a new guy.

Matt Neil is a long term assistant coach of Hope with one son on the varsity team and another graduating from high school this year.  Mark Werley was a successful coach for Holland High for many years and is now currently the athletic director of Zeeland West as well as the assistant basketball coach.

Forgive my ignorance, but who is Matt Neil, and who is Mark Werley?

Go Dutch!  I watched the game online and it's clear to me that this is a true team!  There is no selfishness which makes it difficult for the opponent to concentrate on just one or two players.  Congrats to Carrie on her award but let's get some rest and come out strong for the game tomorrow.  Play like you have all year with good defense, good rebounding and movement on the offensive end and you will realize your dream for the year.  Good luck and bring home a National Title to the second Happiest and Healthiest area in the country (this may move us to #1).  Good luck!

Andy's a good kid and certainly is a valuable member of the Hope team.  As with many young men, he needs to become more focused and pick up his defensive game but he certainly has the offensive skills to play with most anyone at the D-3 level.  Hopefully, he will dedicate himself to getting in good shape in the summer months and become more consistent on the defensive end.

If that occurs, Hope will have a formidable front line with Bowser, Snuggeruud and Holwerda coming back.  It was a fun year in the MIAA this year with a few more teams improving their games to make it much more competitive than years past.  Hope has the tools coming back next year to get back into the NCAA tournament and hopefully go a little farther.  Go Hope!

Anyone have any guesses on who will replace EE at Hope?  Eric will be hard to replace but he'll do a great job at Hudsonville, given some time to develop talent at the lower level.

Derek Kingshott will be playing basketball for Cornerstone next year.  Derek's about 6'4" and 225 pounds but will probably play a little lighter than that come basketball season.  He should be a good fit for Cornerstone, playing along side big brother again.

Nothing on the D3 front this weekend..........but Cornerstone will be getting Derek Kingshott who is leaving the Hillsdale football program presumebly to play basketball for the Eagles.  Hillsdale has him listed as 6-4 TE

So far the only other commitment the Eagles have on their web page is Joey Saladino 5-10 G from Forest Hills Central

I hope it's not true that he is leaving the Hope program but if so, Eric will do a great job in the high school ranks.  It may take him a couple of years to get some of the interest back up at the lower levels that will feed into the varsity program but that shouldn't be a problem given the athletes going through the system.

In watching the JV program the past couple of years, Eric does a great job figuring out the right rotations to play in certain situations.  He will be greatly missed!  Good luck, Eric!

that would be to bad for hope but good for eric  is going to be a good coach

Eric is already a great coach. Many players have benefited immensely from his tutelage within the Hope program. I am sure hope1 meant that, but make it clear, he has already helped many a player!

Word from a reliable source stated that Snuggerud was seen playing with the Hope players and a couple of recruits recently which would lead me to believe that he is still considering options.

speaking of zeeland...did snuggerud also end up at calvin, or is he still considering options?

Here's a clip on another recruit for UNC-Greensboro which tells me Van Dussen will likely move to a shooting guard:

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro men's basketball coach Mike Dement received a signed commitment from point guard Kyle Randall on Wednesday, the first day of the National Letter of Intent program's late signing period.

Randall is a Top 30 rated point guard out of Kennedy Catholic in Hermitage, PA. Randall, who measures at 6-foot and 165 lbs., was the Class A Player of the Year in Pennsylvania, scoring a Kennedy Catholic and Mercer County record 2,022 points. He broke the 2,000-point mark in the PIAA Class A Championship game, an 80-70 setback to Girard College in which Randall scored 33 points at the Bryce Jordan Center on the Penn State campus. Kennedy Catholic went 26-3 on the year.

"We are very excited to have Kyle and his family join our program," said Dement. "For most of this year, we have been trying to recruit a point guard who can score and we are fortunate that we were able to be involved with Kyle and his recruitment. He is an outstanding student, having visited Stanford and Harvard last fall. We project that he will come into our program and impact our lineup right away. Kyle has the ability to put up big numbers by scoring in a variety of ways. He has the ability to get into the lane and draw fouls; he is an excellent free throw shooter and is a very intelligent player who leads well.  He has that point guard mentality of making other the players around him better.

"With our move to the Greensboro Coliseum for our home games next season and our challenging schedule that will likely include several ACC schools, Kyle comes in at a great time and has a tremendous opportunity ahead of him.  He will have an outstanding career here at UNC Greensboro."

Randall averaged 26.5 points and 5.5 assists per game this past season at Kennedy Catholic. He scored 37 points in the state semifinal against Scotland School despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter. A native of Youngstown, OH, which is just across the state line from Hermitage, Randall also had 48 points in a game, breaking the school's single-game mark.

Randall is rated the 30th best point guard nationally in the class of 2009 according to ESPN and Scouts, Inc. based on his ability to attack off the dribble and knock down shots consistently with his mid-range game. He led the state of Pennsylvania in scoring as a junior, also averaging 26.5 points per contest."

The Holland Sentinel has a link on their web page saying that Van Dussen is going to go to UNC Greensboro.

Here's the link http://www.hollandsentinel.com/sports/x1092974780/Chixs-guard-headed-to-North-Carolina

Not much there at the moment.  Should be more in tomorrow's paper.

Interesting choice for VanDussen.
Calvin fans may remember that UNC-Greensboro offered a scholly to Jeremy Veenstra, which he turned down to become a red-headed Knight.
And Ed Douma was Greensboro's head coach from 1982-84, just before he returned to his alma mater.

I had the same thoughts.  Sac, you are either really good or you have too much time on your hands!  It's a bit scary to think that my kids may find some tape of me playing in short shorts and long hair!  Oh well, I'm sure it will all be back in style by the time I have grand kids to view such stuff!

Good job Sac!

I'm 99% sure that is the old K-College gym.  I wasn't sure until late in the video when I saw the padded post just out of bounds!  I made a recruiting trip there back in 1973-74 when Ray Stephan's (?) was the coach.  Needless to say, I wasn't impressed with the facility and ended up going elsewhere but Coach Ray was one of the nicest men around.  That video brings back a lot of memories!

Wheaton is ahead by 36 with 12 minutes to play.

Wheaton looks tough.  Could be a great match up tomorrow night but I'm betting the experience of Wheaton will win out.

Gee, Wiz, I didn't know you had such a "historical perspective" on Calvin basketball.

Gotta run now, but I'll share a little more history with you this weekend.  I think you'll like it!

More history:  The 2008-2009 Hope College Men's Basketball Team

How old are you?

(Jesus... Please take the hate away...)

At least one team in the MIAA played in the NCAA's tonight, and for that matter last year.  Enough said!

Congrats Hope on making the tourney, sorry your trip was so short.

Now I guess we can focus on next year.  Is there any source of info regarding recruiting classes/incoming freshman/transfers?  If not, probably this board is the best source of info and I'd love to hear from some of you who are in the know.  Thanks

I haven't heard any definite recruits coming in for Hope other than they have about 60 kids they've been looking at and are really concentrating on bringing in some bigs.  Obviously, Korey Van Dussen is the biggest name they've been after and if he commits, they would be very entertaining to watch next year.  They still need to come up with a Marcus Vonderheide type guy that has some size but can still move and dominate on the block.

You can do very well in the MIAA with the type of players Hope has been bringing in but to go deep in the tournament you've got to have an inside/out presence with a solid defender able to shut down the opponents best player.  Stay tuned as things develop.

Very dominating performance by Platteville.  Hope looked a bit lost at times tonight and the lack of size really was evident tonight.  It's a great experience for the young guys and playing in an NCAA game as your last college game is something the seniors will never forget.  Congrats on a great season!  Good luck to Platteville going forward in the tournament.
