Hey TheHerst2and4, I went 16-0 vs amHerst. You ...?

I can assure you no one cares anymore about me or my playing career since it was so long ago (defer to you if you think your 16-0 run is relevant), so I apologize to everyone else, but since you asked, I was fortunate to be on some good teams, 7-4 in hoops and finished my career with a national championship. Despite playing a lot of those teams, I think I still had a "great experience"...Besides the older I get the better I was.

With all due respect to NESCAC1 who I think is a passionate Williams fan but fair and reasonable, the soft Amherst schedule has been a narrative for a long time. A lot of those teams have been on the schedule for decades and have ebbs and flows of being competitive. There's long standing relationships between the basketball programs. Besides, if you look at the last 20 years, Amherst has something like a 59% winning percentage against Williams, and about 63% over the last decade. So I guess..what's the point? Maybe the Williams players aren't as insulted as you?

Everyone knows amHurst has a long-standing tradition of scheduling only scrimmages against profoundly weak out-of-conference opponents. As a former player of multiple sports in NESCAC all four years, my view is that this policy is offensive to good competitors who play any sport in NESCAC. I, for one, value let's play anyone, anywhere, any time. Who benefits from a weak schedule ... coaches' records, administrators, fans? Certainly not players seeking a great experience.

As a former player of multiple sports in NESCAC all four years, I found this amusing. Thanks for sharing!

Just here for the jumpshot vs amh63 discourse...

Good win for the boys. That aforementioned recruited length paid off on the boards. Hopefully this will spark a run

European theme to Coach Hixon's annual alumni newsletter (apologies for anything that has already been mentioned on the board)

The team took a trip to Greece and Italy playing a game in each country going 1-1. They took home the first game in Greece 84-69 with Josh Chery turning in an all around game with 17 points 6 rebounds 3 assists and 4 steals. They fell in Italy to Nuova Pallacanestro Olginate 72-59. Joe Schneider led the way with 12 points, 9 boards and 3 blocks. Would love for big Joe to have a break out year on both ends of the floor this year. Such a great experience for student-athletes that don't get the opportunity to study abroad due to a two semester sport.

The newsletter also provided updates on last year's seniors Johnny McCarthy and Michael Riopel. Both former captains are playing professionally in Ireland and getting graduate degrees.

Lastly, Hix listed the incoming freshman. The letter listed Phelan, Allen, and Schretter as mentioned previously on the boards. However it also included a name I don't think we've heard yet, Luka Duranovic from Serbia. Listed as a 6'7 wing it will be interesting to see how his game translates to the NESCAC style. You can check out his highlights here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCzjsBBiUdA

Video of Heskett's clutch late three to put the Ephs up five JUST as the shot clock expires ...

https://twitter.com/howardherman/status/953812629717438464

*JUST after the shot clock expired

If you break it down frame by frame the ball is still in his hands when the clock strikes zero. Before anyone gets too upset, I'm just messing around with nescac1, he's a well respected poster on these boards who always offers fair analysis. In a tight game without D1/NBA style replay really hard to get that one right, I don't blame the refs for letting that one go. It was a great clutch shot and a dagger in our purple hearts.

As others said, another classic Amherst-Williams game, looking forward to the rematch.

My apologies if this has already been posted and any staleness since it was published in late August, but thought this was a pretty interesting piece on Amherst Sr. Elijiah Zabludoff that hits on some recurring themes for seniors considering the NESCAC https://www.si.com/college-football/2017/08/22/elijah-zabludoff-walk-ons-division-iii-scholarship

Sorry, should have included that piece: Middlebury

NESCAC DPOW Andrew Yamin spent last Saturday hounding the Wesleyan QB and came away with 4.5 sacks for the game. 10.5 on the season, pretty impressive through 6 games. That puts him a sack away from breaking Kevin Ferber's school record with three games to go.
Got me curious how close he was to the NESCAC record, turns out not so close, Kevin Ryan's 15.5 back in 2006 is going to be a tough mark to beat and that was done in 8 games. He was a savage. As previous records fall with the extended season this year,  us has-beens will always have the age old "well [so and so] did it in less games" argument
For a fleeting moment I thought I was getting nostalgic thinking back to the playing days, but more accurately it was a traumatic flashback; he gave us a really hard time in our defensive battle back in 06. I'll need a therapist if I start thinking of our homecoming debacle. Good times.

Middlebury alum and former Amherst assistant Koby Altman expected to be named the next GM of the Cavs at 34 years old. Congrats to Koby and the Panther community, he's a great dude.

For those interested during the slow summer sports months, D3 is going to be well represented in the Israeli Pro Basketball finale tomorrow night.
Maccabi Haifa has Amherst's Willy Workman and Rochester's John DiBartolomeo and Hapoel Jerusalem has Isaac Rosefelt of St. Thomas out in Minnesota. DiBartolomeo is putting up the best numbers (I believe he starts) but all three have been contributing.
I'm taking Maccabi Haifa at +4 with a complete homer bet; hoping Amare Stoudemire is a no-show for Jerusalem.

Also, Jim Frew, basketball and baseball, both at an all NESCAC level.
Hearing that name puts a smile on my face, I grew up watching Jim play at Saint John's High School and tried to model my game after his as a youngster (minus the scoring prowess). Thanks for the nostalgia

As mentioned over on the basketball boards, I believe a recent Amherst hoops recruit, Garret Day of Avonworth in Pittsburgh is heading to Amherst to play both football and basketball. He might just focus on hoops, but he had a great year in football as well: threw for 1,339 yards and 17 touchdowns, added 12 receptions for 130 yards, and led his team with 810 yards on 144 carries and 11 touchdowns.

I think it is utterly ridiculous for Williams to be ranked behind Amherst

I will defer to you nescac1 and other posters on this board that have a better pulse of non NESCAC teams, but is it really "utterly ridiculous"?

Let me preface this by saying personally I don't think Amherst deserves to get into the tournament.

That being said the teams are at worst neck and neck. Amherst beat Williams twice head to head, beat Tufts and beat the number one team in the country. Williams beats Midd, Hope and one win vs Wes. Think its the head to head coming into play and apparently the D3Hoops voters tend to agree with Amherst garnering more votes.

All that can change with a Williams win this weekend but I just don't think your characterization is fair at this point.

What surprises me the most is that they haven't found a way to get their really talented and experienced big guys more opportunities

Couldn't agree more nescac1, and taken alongside the previous discussion about their point guard's shooting volume, it becomes an issue. Call me a purist, but I think it's ultimately problematic when your point guard is putting up the most shots on your team. When he's on, you're gonna win some games, but when he's not it can be crippling to your team.
Not to be over simplistic but the point guard controls the game; he's touching the ball every play, the other guys on the court rely on him to get going. So when he's off and taking most of the shots, your whole team is going to be off.
You just don't have this problem with a balanced point guard or even a pass first point guard, if he's off he can still influence the game by getting other guys touches.
I can't help but think back to the guys I got to watch during my years at Amherst, Olsen, Crotty, Zack Ray, Pat Martin. None of those guys had issues scoring, but still got their teammates involved and put them in the right situations to perform. It unifies a team when your point guard steps in and says let's get Dave a touch down here, or let's get Johnny on a backdoor. Then those guys also don't feel pressured to put up bad shots because they don't know when they'll get another touch.

I might be overanalyzing or maybe just getting salty with age. Amherst will certainly be fine and let me be clear I think Jayde is a very good player. My concern is that this issue does bode problems for a deep run, with that philosophy there's too much reliance on one guy to be on.

As an aside, read through that list of Amherst suggested nicknames, it's so Amherst it hurts, cringeworthy really. jumpshot if you had any hand in getting the "Hamsters" on that list, a tip of the cap to you, well played

So, it's mid-September: any word on impact frosh or surprise break-out upperclassmen from NESCAC campuses?

One potential impact frosh for Amherst has had a change of heart. Jamil Gambari has decided to enroll at Hampton University as a walk-on instead of Amherst.
Word is the decision was driven by a desire to play division 1 basketball and a concern that Amherst didn't have a business program (a fact that hasn't seemed to hurt the careers of countless successful business men and women with an Amherst degree). Interestingly enough his high school, prep school and even the Hampton coach have allegedly advised him Amherst would provide the best playing time and education opportunities for him.
Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing that athleticism on the court but best of luck to him. Looking forward to fall pick-up updates.

For those interested, a great read written by current Amherst offensive lineman, Elijah Zabludoff, about the "stigma" of playing D-3 football
