Admittedly biased, but the fact that the Bearcats were in it 14-7, despite playing w/out their starter/stud qb, was in itself pretty impressive.

Maybe we shouldn't be talking about injured qb's in the play-offs, makes me kinda nervous.

Question for you Linfield backers:  Is Birkhofer going to make a run at pro-ball? From what I've seen/read, he's got the leg-strength for it.  Maybe a shot at the AFL?

Salem should be rockin Saturday...I'm tempted to make the drive down.  As much as I hate that stupid offense (I think good teams, see UWW, can stop gimmicky offenses), this years version of it is run VERY well and it is fun to watch...especially when you got a bunch of SCIAC players running around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to defend it.

....well it looks stupid if you can defend it or if they aren't that good. But this year they look like they did in like ....what ? 1997 or 8. Can't remember when Pinkerton was the qb and they went to the final.

Pinkerton was the QB in '97 when WU went to the NAIA final, lost to Findley (sp?) 14-7, I believe.

OK....now I'm confused...which is it!

It is the new-style "Field Turf".  Saw it when WU played PLU.  It's new enough that the surrounding track hasn't even been painted yet - at the end of the game the PA announced that no fans would be allowed on the field to greet players from either team, so everybody lined up along the fence.  Made for kind of an odd post-game celebration.  That, and PLU doesn't seem to do their "afterglow" thing anymore.

My boss will not be happy about this.  my bad, the sender of WOU posts is not who you think.  let's just leave it at that.

Your e-mail address is on your posts, which is required by our Terms of Service. Seems clear.

Maybe he was careless enough to let a current athlete or student assistant have access to his e-mail account. Don't know if I buy it or not, but that's what I inferred from his 'excuse.'

I think adults know they are responsible for their own e-mail account.

The problem with that logic, Pat, is assuming that just because he's of age means he is an adult.    And suddenly I find myself rooting for Linfield.  Never saw that coming.

Yeah, and I guess it doesn't hurt that WU beat SOU who beat MHB, right?

They really aren't supposed to look at non D-3 games...but I don't totally buy that. If Linfield and Willamette can both beat SOU, UMHB shouldn't get a free pass.

Many folks think Whitworth's loss to Azusa last year hurt a lot. Linfield folks also feel that a loss to SOU cost them a spot in 2001.

I'd agree - it seems to me there are so few chances for any kind of direct comparison between teams like WU, Linfield and UMHB (at least in the current year), that the committee would want to consider non D-3 games.  Of course, you could easily say that they played at different points in the season so it isn't a fair measure.  Only thing I can say for certain is I'd hate to be on that committee.

Did you need a ladder to climb up on the bandwagon?  ;D

**laughing** Nah, didn't need a ladder - wasn't much of a climb with only 4 WU posters on here so far.   ;D

That doesn't surprise me...they promote bush type tactics over their because they are not used to winning and have become kind of immature and childish...

Right, Bluenote.  [sarcasm]I'm a bush league writer who's going to use my column space to rub this loss in all your faces for the next year.  Speckman's a bush type coach who encourages late hits and taunting.  Our players all cheat, our fans are all idiots, and Linfield is the Holy Grail of class.  Hell, I even steal wildcat11's sarcasm tags![/sarcasm]  I vote no on broad generalizations.

No...you're a loyal hack who is jumping on the bandwagon, nothing more. Take it to Salem for the Stagg Bowl and win..... and then you can flap your jaw.

And you honestly wonder why most people only last on this board for just a short time, a few weeks at best? Why should BearcatPress put up with this kind of crap?

As for fans - everyschool across the nation has @ssh*ole fans.  WU, Linfield, even Western Baptist (or Corban, or whatever they're called now).  After WU lost to Linfield at Maxwell field in '98 to ensure the streak, I watched a Linfield student scream at Speckman that he was a freak that should've been aborted.  I bring that up for one reason - EVERY team/school/institution has those few fans that are, well, sick.  I don't pretend to belive all of Linfield is like that, and I certainly know WU has a few as well.  Just frustrating when what is normally a pretty good board devolves based on a bunch of people that have NOTHING to do with the board, and have never posted on it.

Of course, anything I say will be discounted as being a "jump on the bandwagon" WU fan.  Sad.

It'll be interesting to see if Speckman has the team practice on the "Quad" today as he did prior to the L & C game. I think that was a brilliant move to get the team some more exposure and get students and faculty a little more geared up for the game.

From '98 to '04 ever Friday practice/walk-through was on the Quad, BearcatFan.  Has the team not been doing that anymore?

. . .Any idea why northwest schools seem to have a hard time keeping football programs going while we don't seem to see this in other parts of the country.  Cost? Lack of history? Anti-football students and/or faculty?  Linfield/PLU being TOO dominate and multiple losing seasons leading to cancelling program?  Or is my premise false to begin with?  How many other small schools have dropped their programs since say 1970?  Pat Coleman, do you have any data on that?
Speedy, it isn't just northwest schools. CA used to have a great bunch of D-II schools and they all dropped football at the same time. They were all state colleges, Chico, Sonoma, Hayward, SF State. Then we had a bunch of small D-IAA schools drop football, Santa Clara, St. Mary's, Pacific among the private and Long Beach and Fullerton among the state schools. They all cited money as the reason for droping the programs. I used to love having so many schools to choose from to see football on a Saturday afternoon.

THe mention of NAIA brings up another question:  how long will the NAIA exist?  Is it dying a long, slow death?

As for WU vs. PLU - The Lutes really came out flat, and just never seemed to get in sync.  The home stands were empty too, to my untrained eye maybe 400 fans, tops.  Their biggest stretch of momentum was on a series of classic Lute trick plays. Man is it frustrating to give up yards that way.

Just saw the Triple Take article that mentioned both Linfield and WU as potentially falling into trap games this weekend.  Hope they both role (god, it hurt to say that about Linfield) - will make for one helluva game next week for both sides.

I've been checked out of the loop for too long, but:  anybody know of any logic for NWC scheduling?  I know it rotates around, but it seems that we alternated  from Linfield  to PLU as our last game while I was there - but no longer is the case. It'd be great to always have WU and Linfield finish the season against each other.  Little things like that, in my opinion, help stoke those rivalries.

MonroviaCat - nice one, but sorry to let you down, not her.

As for the handle, wildcat11, I can take it.  What's sports without some good rivalry smack-talk - or kicker bashing?  Been there, heard it all.

Well, after casually reading the board for several years, figured it's time to join the fray.  Can't leave bearcatpress hanging as the sole WU voice on the board.

And yes, I'm sure there'll be a few "fair-weather fan" comments about joining the board when WU is rolling.  The timing is more of a graduate, grow-up, calm down a bit timeframe before wading into this.

Hello all.
