Thank you fat-old-LB.  I am a new BW mom and have been reading all season.  Trying to understand this sport my son loves.  Seems everyone is down on BW and I just wasn't quite sure why. All I know is that these boys must really love the sport to work as hard as they all do and I admire them ALL.

Welcome, Mom.  Here's my take on the flavor of the BW-related posts:  Most of the posters on this board are Mount Union folks and there's been a special animosity between UMU and BW for decades.  When Mount Union was just at the beginning at putting its run of dominance together, BW represented the biggest obstacle in the OAC.  They were the last OAC team to win a National Championship and they had several conference championship seasons in the 80's.  Even after the Mount Union Machine got rolling, BW has been a thorn in its side, playing them tough most years.  They represent Mount Union's last regular season road loss in '91 and were the lone regular season loss between '92 and '05.  When I was at Mount Union, there was always a heightened level of intensity when we were playing BW.

So, while I don't claim any love for BW, the truth is there's a lot to be proud of given the history of the program, but also the impressive turn-around from last year's 3 - 7 season.  Best of luck to your son the rest of the way.

I think most of the comments here are intended as good-natured ribbing of a very successful rival who once dominated Mt. Union.  108 is right about the intensity of the rivalry and I expect it will be on display by both sides at BW this year.  I just hope we all stay civilized.  BW is the only place I've ever seen fights break out between opposing fans (it may have happened elsewhere, but I did not see it) and it is the only place I've ever been spit on by students of the opposing school.  It does get a little intense.

So while BW has much to be proud of and has a program worthy of respect, I still won't shower love on the "flaming pile."

Now Mom, as to your son, I sincerely wish him the best for a successful, happy and injury free college career!

Used to get spit on at John Carroll a lot.... walking to the field from the locker room

Do any mount fans know who this year's class of M club Hall of famers is?  Last year there were a bunch of football players, but I haven't seen who is going in this year.  Also, are there any changes to the uniforms because of the name change?

Coach Wable's hometown is Van Wert, not terribly far, but far enough.

Ohioans are fortunate to have such wide diversity in college options.  Here in FL our kids have few options outside of the large universities.  OAC schools provide an attractive option even for kids from the sunshine state.  There's much to be said for small town schools.  A lot of parents and students like the idea of sending theirkids to school in a safe, quiet environment.  Most high schools in my area are larger than any OAC school.  It may not provide the ego boost some are seeking, but the thought of a more personal type of college experience is attractive.

Van wert is also home to Nate Sinning, a once promising Mount QB who quit because of a kid named Borchert.

I'm cheering for the Raiders, but I'm glad to see Coach Sirianni getting a shot at the best.  Mike is a great guy, and I'm happy for his success!!

"I need to be in Dayton, OH by 7 pm tonight to be inducted into my HS athletic HOF."

Perfect!  Do you have that copyrighted?  Would you mind if I borrow it some time?   :D

I seem to have lost my Congressional Medal of Honor around here somewhere :D

BTW I'm in the new touch screen Mount Union Hall of Fame  ;) If you go to Track and Filed and press Vaughn Davis, I'm the guy standing next to Vaughn. I knew I'd make somehow  ;D

What is the touch screen HOF at MUC?  Is this new?

I've read most, if not all, the dialogue regarding the official name change at Mount Union College. I'd prefer not to involve myself since I feel that's better left to the alumni and other "friends" of the institution. But, I just wanted to leave you with some food for thought from an American living abroad.  I've lived overseas for more than 20 years; I can tell you that a school with the title "College" attached has a very negative connotation among many potential international students.  Especially here in Korea, my home for the past 16 years, you'd be hard-pressed to find a student willing to attend anything other than a school with "University" associated with it. To a Korean, a College is a 2 year school, like a technical or trade school.  In the Korean educational system, getting a low score on the nationwide university entrance exam as a High School senior, means you will end up at a "College," for two years, if you go at all. A student in this boat has virtually no chance of landing in at a domestic "University."  Of course it's only semantics to us, but to a potential international student considering a life-changing decision like going abroad for education, name does make a huge difference.

If that is the case,  why has Mount Union College had so many foreign (mostly asian) students over the past 15 years?

There are a large number of Japanese students due to their sister school (Baika) in Osaka.  The majority of the Japanese students I met were from Baika.

OK thanks... that makes sense

Did everyone see he was elected to the M Club HOF?  Along with Mike Elder, Mike Hallett, Jim Ballard, and Ed Bubonics.  That is a pretty good group of football players!!!

First Group from the Championship Years:

M Club HOF

Not to discount the accomplishments of those who came before or after this group, but these are the men who finally pushed MUD over the top, made it to the Stagg and won the first title.  Their performance through the playoffs and in the Stagg Bowl paved the way for the remaining teams who have won the title.  Prior to '93 MUC was a regional power that was only good enough to lose in the semis to the eventual national champion.
IMO more guys from this team deserve M Club status.
The men honored were the obvious, but others from that team are deserving.

I agree completely!  This team put MUC over the top.  It takes a special bunch to think they can do something that hasn't been done before.  They laid out the blue print and gave everyone else the confidence to believe they could do it.  I imagine there are some other players from this team that will get in, but it won't be until next year or the year after, because they weren't seniors on this team.

Also, it is nice to see Mike Elder go in with this group, but he actually graduated the year before I think.  Too bad cause he sure deserved a championship if anyone did!

Thanks bud, things don't look quite so bad since I don't need to do anything further for the school.

Headed out to Atwood with my former Co-Head coach (daughter's yearbook advisor) tomorrow moring for a couple of days. Was starting to think I should sell that travel trailer.
Sounds like a plan putting Moggy in the rear views for a few days and just being Dad.

Speaking of Atwood....  Did everyone see he was elected to the M Club HOF?  Along with Mike Elder, Mike Hallett, Jim Ballard, and Ed Bubonics.  That is a pretty good group of football players!!!

I know I don't post a lot, but I do read quite a bit on here.  After seeing all these high school players committed to mount, it got me wondering: What high schools have sent the most players to mount who have been major contributors.  Are there any high schools who have sent multiple kids who ended up as all-americans or all-conference performers.  Just curious what you all think.

I had no idea whatever happened to him.  Maybe we could have some more "what are they doing now" moments.  Since we are in this era what is Bill Borchert doing now?  How about other former raiders?

So the next trivia question is:

Who was the other freshman QB that Borchert battled for the starting spot his freshman year?

I can't find it and don't hold me to the correct spelling of his name but I believe his last name was Yursich. If my memory serves me correctly, he and Borchert were both freshman in 1994 and shared QB duties for the 1st 4 or 5 games till Bill took over the QB job permanently.

That name sounds right.  I believe he was also a very good baseball player.

I would like to see MUC use Shorts like Florida uses Jarrod Fason.  Not as much as the main QB, but get Cecil the ball in more creative ways.

This is the first year in a long time when we don't know who the next QB will be.  Looking back you could pretty well tell who the next QB was because whomever it was, they got PT the year before.  It may go all they way back to the Ballard-Borchert "hand off" when we didn't really know in the off season who the next QB would be.

Ballard: 1991-1993
Borchert:  1994-1997
Smeck:  1998-2000
Adamson:  2001-2002
Burghardt: 2002-2003 (shared time with both Adamson and Bruney)
Bruney:  2003-2004
Jorris:  2005-2006
Michelli: 2006-2008

Edit:  Does anyone know who the backup QB to Ballard was?  I seem to remember there was an underclassman who was maybe a Soph. in 1993 who didn't return in 1994, which opened the door for Borchert to be a 4 year starter.

Actually the backup for 93 was a freshman named Nate Sinning.  He left after August of his sophomore year because he didn't work hard enough in the off-season.  He thought he was the guaranteed starter until 2 freshman started pushing him.  He didn't like it and left.  If you remember, Borchert was not the full time QB his freshman year until about 4 games into the season.  He shared time with another freshman named Mike something I think.  They were in a battle for the QB job, but obviously Borchert won the spot.
