This is Glo's 3rd year.  He now has recruits that are juniors.  I agree he did a better job with Niemans kids that 1st year than Nieman had done.  But since then, it has looked like it is going all down hill.

I like the idea that Simpson is going after big school kids.  That is an area that has been largely untapped by the IIAC schools.  BUT, a kid still has to have talent.  Just because he went to a big school, doesn't necessarily make him a great football player.  It's all about finding talent, wherever that talent may be.

Agreed - not saying there aren't good  Eight man and up players, there are, Scott Frost during Nebraska Glory Days came from Wood River, Nebraska.  I just recalled during the  7 -3 campaign the bulk of the impact players that year seemed to come from 4A schools.   Sometimes I wonder if it is really tough to evaluate a good player at a smaller class,  is he really that good or just light years ahead of the competition.  An 11.2 hundred looks pretty fast against a slow field but is Way, way back from the high school kid we've got running the ball this year and turned a 10.3 at state meet last year - unfortunately pretty sure no one in the IIAC will be in the running to recruit him either.    Just saying   :D

SC -  I would tend to agree with you,  it appears they are doing a better job of recruiting at the 3A- 4A level - sorry don't mean to offend those from smaller schools but there is a big speed / size difference between classes and that really shows up when kids move to the college game.   Another factor that IMO played a role in recruiting decline at end of previous staffs reign was the loss of Clint Head (I think he went to be O- coordinator at Hasting College)  he was a recruiting demon and had a passion for Simpson but career opportunity drew him away.
Did it seem Wart Trainer has a ax to grind with Glo - We know most of last years seniors and to a man - guys that actually saw playing time loved the passion Glo brought to Simpson   Guys who don't see the field and complain about the coach usually are want-a-be's, whiners or simply not realistic about their talents.

Yes Glo's first year has been his best at 7 & 3  but Niemann had a losing record with basically the same players so that sword can cut both ways.

Klompen  ( Man I can't stand wooden shoes)
What gives?  We've been picking on them with jokes all week, no replies, no "we're going to show them attitude".  Nothing.  I think Simpson is the new Cornell.  Makes me wonder how long Coach G will be around.  Any speculation?

I think Coach Glo will be fine,  mine has moved on so not chasing Storm as closely this year but it appears they are trying to groom the youngsters for the future.  As often happens the entirely new staff took a bit of a recruiting hit especially that first year.  Upper classman representation is pretty thin this year so lots of newbies seeing more time than would normally be expected. My son loved playing for Glo and the passion will return but you have to have the horses (3 year olds and up) in the barn - still running too many yearlings.

From sunny San Diego to snowy Iowa:  Merry Christmas everybody!

It didn't look all that warm last night at the Poinsettia bowl.

OK PH rub it in -  I have a 4 foot drift in my driveway, Simpson son is home but son, daughter -in-law and grandson from Sioux Falls have no chance of making it home for the Holidays so a "Not so warm San Diego" doesn't look too bad -
Merry Christmas to all - even the Dutch.

With respect to Wartburg Roster-gate...would I really want a ballplayer who was scared off by reading a roster in the first place?

I certainly don't want to start any "Storm on Storm" crime, but you say that life isn't fair so move on, then you go right into it not being fair.  Trust me, he may feel slighted right now, but after he graduates no one will care whether he was or wasn't a DIII all-conference athlete.

If I was a current SC player, I would be more concerned about a 3-7 record and giving up over 40 points/game in the seven losses.  If it wasn't for a last second field goal against BV and a missed extra point by Cornell, they could've been staring at a 1-9 season.

Um - Maybe it is different at other IIAC schools, my brother was an All American, All Conference and Hall of Famer at Buena Vista 40 years ago and they still very much remember.  Your comment seems to diminish the D3 athlete, if he was all conference at D2 I guess someone would care and certainly D1 athletes are God like - what's with that.

Yes the season was a disappointment on many levels but not sure of your fan status as you choose to air the dirty laundry.  As you point out a couple of bounces the other direction it could have been worse,  a couple key injuries less it may have been much better as well.

PH -
Maybe Wartburg is just getting smart and wants to dispel the recruiting rumor "be careful with Wartburg, they'll bring 90 freshmen in every year and many never get a fair look"  Hell even D1 players often want to play as freshman and worry about what upper classmen are ahead of them. Besides who'd want to go through 4 years of their life wearing "black and orange"   Even Purple would be better than "Black and Orange" For G--'s Sake   :)

By the way congrats to JR.

First, thanks...we are very proud out here.  I find myself sympathizing with your take on young Mr. Wolfe.  We felt somewhat slighted last year...but you can see that there is a bias against teams with the losing record.  There are lot of good players in the IIAC

I also think there would have been a chance that the 4 players that got All-IIAC nods might not have gotten as much IF we had lost to Loras and finished 0-8 in the conference again.  Jr. and/or Bladt might have been bumped down to 2nd team, and/or,  King and/or Zasada may not have gotten the HM nods.  I think Cornell picked up a tiny bit of momentum for those guys when we won.

Life ain't fair - move on.  I still scratch my head how BV a team Simpson beat lands 7 on 1st and 2nd team and Simpson gets 1 on second team.  No offense but we also beat Cornell in a very good ball game in which John had a pick in the end zone that helped turn that game. I suspect group dynamics plays a role as well, some of the coaches have been around the conference for awhile and Simpson has a bunch of young fiesty bucks - who knows.

Of course this opens up an entirely different issue on player hoarding.

Is Wartburg's Roster-gate a player hoarding ploy?  Is UW-W's purported practice of grey-shirting, a thinly veiled player hoarding technique?

Are we ready to open this can o' worms again?   ???

You are a genius - you've been wasted on this whole spa thing.  Oh course, why didn't I think of that, the Black Knights have an off year and immediately their up to their recruiting tricks.  :-\

Let me be the 2nd one to congradulate John Wolfe on a great career. Maybe I'm bragging, but I bet I've watched more IIAC football games in person and on the net than anyone else on this board. I've had the chance to watch two games in person one Saturday, and thanks to the late start for Wartburgs Homecoming, watched most of Luther/Cornell before switching to the knights/Coe and then listened to UD/Simpson one Saturday. I've watched every team in the conference play at least twice, except BV (one time in the mud) I can tell you that there are a lot of good football players in this conference. For me to pick an all conference team based on what I've seen, would be a grave injustice to the kids. The coaches that do the voting see so much more than you or I, that we just shouldn't question it.
I really like the way the IIAC does it as opposed to other conferences. We have a nine team league with 65 players recieving 1st team- 2nd team or Honorable mention. The WIAC is an 8 team conference with 77 players for the same spots. Would you feel better if the IIAC recognized 15 DBs for 8 teams like the WIAC?

Not really looking for additional spots, really thought lofty stats on returns both in conference and nationally would have earned Return Specialist spot.   DB spot particularly at safety slots varies pretty wildly depending on the defensive concept employed.  Some defenses use their safeties more as additional linebacker(s) particularly if they have strong corner play.  If a safety can consistently roll up tight and become the 8th / 9th man in the box his tackle count likely will go up dramatically so I find comparing stats at that position particularly tough.  Let's face it, Central and Coe got nearly half of the 54 1st and 2nd team spots and often good players look even better when surrounded by other good players. Strong pass rush equals interceptions in the secondary, great blocking makes for long runs at the halfback slot, etc, etc.

Congrats to Central on a successful season and good luck to Coe in the rest of the playoffs.

I was looking at the All Conference list and I saw that both Bladt (Alan with BV and Don with Cornell) brothers made the 1st team defense. Can anyone remember a time that brothers have made 1st team all conference in the same season?

My Congratulations to Coe on their win and to Central for a great season.

I too had a chance to look at the IIAC All Conference Teams and want to congratulate all the players that were honored.  I'm sure each is very deserving but I did see one anomoly,  Tyler Takes (Coe)  was named 2nd Team at WR and also 2nd Team at Return Specialist.  I'm in no way saying he is not deserving of all conference,  I've watched him play for 2 years and he's a fine athlete,  but ALL Conference TWICE in the same year, is there precedent for that? Just Curious.  Generally these awards spread the wealth a bit and I was surprised to see BV with 7 and Simpson only 1 yet we beat BV and their overall record was 1 win better.  Go Figure.

All that said, I have a very personal connection to a player that I feel was overlooked and will use this forum for his 15 seconds of fame.   He led the IIAC in Kick Off return yards (736), was second in the conference in Kick Off Return Average (Regular season 24.5), FIFTH in the nation in kick off return Yards, led Simpson in All Purpose yards (759)  plus had 42 tackles, 2 interceptions and a forced fumble in 2009 plus 42 tackles and 4 interceptions in 2008 yet didn't garner even an honorable mention. To John Wolfe, congratulations on a very good year and very good career at Simpson.

BTW...that letter made me well up.   :'(

:)

Heys -  thanks for sharing - These young men will share a lifetime of memories and growing experiences.  I know in our son's case Simpson and the IIAC was the right choice.  I know he'll miss the excitement that is game day and the special bond you have with your teammates.

Senior Day at Cornell.  Coming to Iowa to watch the last 2 games in Jr.'s college career.  Where did the time go? :o

Senora Heys is all worried about the weather..we had to go buy her a cold weather coat.  Rev. 3 is coming too.  Looking forward to a fun time in Iowa regardless of the games' outcomes.

PH - You are right,  our son is also a Senior and it seems like yesterday we moved him in his freshman year.  He has only one game left and after that we'll be in total withdrawl.  A WARM welcome on your return to Iowa  OK - warm is a relative term.  ;D

Just going to go slit my wrist and drink draino

PH - Hope you're on the mend - Cornel played pretty well.  I do feel better that we didn't sit in cover 2 but changed up some and ran a fair amount of man.  Jr. split the seam on a cover 2 and from then on Simpson seemed to change it up enough to keep your young QB guessing and let front 7 put more pressure on him.

Couldn't find any Draino and we were all out of Sierra Nevada.   Hard to get an angle with the triple blade razors these days, too.  So ya'll have me to kick around for the rest of the year  :(

I just gotta ask WHY?  Why does Simpson decide to make changes now...I mean...wait a week for gosh sakes.  They didn't do this it for Central, why treat us any different?  ???  ;D

I feel your pain, we play that coverage against Dubuque and we likely win that game. Plus my son likes man coverage a little better and has a better shot at interceptions especially if front 7 can put a little heat on a QB.  Pressue leads to ill advised late over the middle throws which safeties tend to love.   Main thing is to mix it up and keep QB's guessing.

I'm curious if anyone has tried to press cover / bump and run Zweifel -  he's got great hands, maybe slightly better than average speed but doesn't appear to be terribly physical.  I can tell from  watching a train wreck you aren't going to sit in Tampa 2 and give 10 yard cushion and do anything but help him set records.  Oh that's right Simpson did help him set 2 records.  I was pretty disappointed we didn't try something / anything different after say his first 10 catches.   Put your best athlete on him, knock the crap out of him coming off the line and then jump in his jock and stay there.

wtf???  only a simpson fan would think of this ;D

Oh pretty good -  that should keep you Kohawks worried when we come to town. :-*
I would say you guys spent more time playing in your own jocks then stopping the Coe offense  ;D ;D
I'd love to come up with some glib reply but we stunk it up,   Coe looks to be a very good team and well right now we are not.   I'm not sure which is more humbling giving up 400+ yards in the first half or offense only having 53.    When your kick off return man is your all purpose yardage leader that is not a good sign.   :-\
