[url=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/]Did anyone see a movie this summer/fall called "Inception"? It stars Leonardo DiCaprio and is about invading a person's mind and stealing their secrets. I think my mind has been invaded.  ::)  ;)

I have no recollection whatsoever of a 2 year starting PG named Blaise Davis who was an unsung hero, & steadying influence at Carleton College during their playoff run last year.  The dude has been totally removed from my consciousness, sub consciousness, & the latest Carleton roster. I wonder if the MIAC coaches who voted for Carleton knew that Davis doesn't exist anymore. I'd have to see a lot of improvement out of the other guards to rate them as high as 2nd place without an experienced PG.

DP, you need to drop down to level five to find Blaise Davis. There you will find him studying hard at Carleton. Turns out he had just had enough basketball and wants to focus on what is next in life. I guess the top stopped spinning.  A colleague of mine had a son who was a track stud and had a scholarship to run. Senior year of high school he told his dad, I'm done. Never ran again. It happens. I'm going to miss Mr. Cool skipping down the court and the in-transition threes.
The other guards are surely different types. Swatzke and Silbert (SP) are more frenetic/high octane but I worry when they have to face the Tommy dogs. We'll see.

I just returned last night from Stevens Point after a heartbreak of a loss. The Knights had the game in their grasp and it was taken away from them. I agree with CarltonSid that if they make the call on the one end they should call it on the other.

The game started with the feel that SP was going to run over the Knights. It seemed they scored every time down the court in the first third of the game. SP is big. At every position they out-sized the Knights. Watching Davis guard a 6.4 210 lb behemoth was scary and amusing. He did a decent job only being posted up on a couple of times. Coming out of the half Biewen hit some huge 3's to get the Knights back in the game, and from there on out it was pretty evenly matched. SP offense runs through 20 (Moses?) and the Knights started doubling and sometimes tripling him in the second half. The rest of SP seemed to keep waiting for him to score. It reminded me of the Knights last year with Zorro doing all the heavy lifting.

GACMan is correct, Gustavus is the loudest (not even close) with St. Thomas next and Stevens Point a DISTANT third in the cheering section. The Gustavus game was deafening, and their student section was rather amusing. When the Carleton players were announced, all the fans turned their backs to them. They did boo a couple of times when the Knights made a play which is sort of lame but not altogether unexpected. Their chant of, "This is our house" came back to haunt them at the end when the lead fan for the Knights started slapping the floor and chanting, "This is our house" while Gustavus fandom looked on glumly and quietly.

POY Tyler Nicoli? It is clear I am biased, but I take Sutherland or Jonkey Kong ahead of Tyler. There are probably others (Ray Brown) that are more deserving as well.

The Knights had a great season and a great run. The big three Sutherland, Jonker, and Rosett were huge as everyone has stated. I remember someone saying on this board way back that he/she was "Cautiously Optimistic" about the Knights season. Maybe someone can look that up. Some wanker said the Knights guards would go down once St Thomas "unleashed their dogs". Davis had 2 turnovers against St. Thomas (0 TOs), Gustavus, and Stevens Point combined. Enough said. Biewien shot extremely well coming off screens and nailing 3s and finally, Theison off the bench is a player to be reckoned with.

Rosett is a rock down low and will be very tough to replace; doing all the hard work and quietly going about his business. He is a chemistry major, so his future is bright and I wish him the best of luck along with all the other Seniors in the MIAC! See ya next year!   ;D

but how interesting that non-mvp johnson is gone and carleton has it's finest playoff showing in the last four years. with essentially the remainder of their team from last year.
after watching the carlie's take down the toms last night, i still can't get over the impressive manner in which they did it.  the final score was not really an indication of the decisiveness of the win.  i was disappointed in the number of people in the crowd, but not the enthusiasm of the carelton faithful.  pretty sweet.   tommies have to be happy that their exile to concordia's ganglehoff is nearly over.  that place does not begin to compare to schoenecker.

jeremy sutherland is clearly an mvp candidate this year, and i would be not at all surprised if he won it.  oh wait, i guess i would be.   ;)

save me a seat in st. peter on saturday.  i look for that place to be rockin'!!

Sutherland was out last year with a shoulder injury. A pretty important piece to this years run.

What a night for the Knights. UST definitely missed some shots, but I thought Carleton did a great job of contesting shots, played solid on the defensive glass and shot the ball well (obviously) in a very effective offensive performance. What a game by Blaise Davis--zero turnovers against that pressure in 30 minutes of action. Yes, only had three assists, but if it was like hockey or soccer where two assists are allowed on a score, he'd racked up 10-12. His passes over the top of the UST pressure often led to a second pass and open shot for a teammate. He also did a great job on Scott, really limiting his open looks.

Carleton's work against the press turned that pressure into a positive for the Knights--they actually held an 18-12 advantage in points off turnovers. Great game plan by the Carleton staff to not only beat the press, but make UST pay.

If you want to watch video of the two dunks, the Real CarletonSID has thrown up a clip of just the dunks. He'll have a full video recap later today.

I've wanted to say this the last two weeks, but if I had an MVP vote it would go to Jeremy Sutherland.

I totally agree! It is nice to see Davis get recognition for the way he handles the press. It looked like he called Sutherland out one time for not being where he should be. Davis ended up calling a timeout. He is really growing with his leadership.

Most of what transpired during the game has already been discussed. But what about that technical on Sutherland for the dunk. He held onto the rim but it looked like he would come down on Rosett. Isn't that legal? What is the rule?

Congrats to all. A big win!

USA! USA!

Gotta love the STrib - can't even copy and paste.

MIAC basketball playoffs Monday
No. 3 seed Concordia will host St. Catherine and No. 4 Macalester will host St. Thomas on Monday night in the first round of the MIAC women's basketball tournament.

The men's tournament begins Tuesday, with No. 3 Augsburg hosting St. John's and No. 4 Hamline at home against Carleton.

Bummed about this week - Tuesday Hutch hosts Shakopee in a game between teams at the top of the conference - Thursday - playoff hockey and state girls hockey - Saturday I'm in Duluth.

Checking both the Carelton and Hamline sites Monday morning says Carleton is number four and will be hosting Hamline Tuesday night.

Uh, yeah, Wabb, we ALL knew that., PI was pointing out yet another error by the Strib.  (It helps to read all the words not just the ones in bold)  :) ;D

My bad. I did read the whole thing...I just read it wrong.  :-[

The circle has been completed grasshopper...Carleton defeats Bethel in a tough, physical game 72-67. My boy Sutherland was moving like a gazelle to a tune of 18 pts and 7 assists. Rosett goes off for 20 pts and 10 rebs. Davis ends up with 12 pts and 3 assists, 3 of his pts at the foul line on a 3 pt attempt. Jonkey Kong was harrassed all game long but hit a 3 pt dagger with 14 seconds left for a total of 5. Papa put his hex on Theisen who appeared off but still managed 4 pts. A huge win and the Knights are going to be very tough in the playoffs... ;D

Note: The last time the Knights beat Bethel was Rosetts 1st game of his freshman year. Today is his last regular season game. Something, symetrical about this...Go Knights, we need a win!

The one player who has shown himself to be immune to the curse is DP favorite Seth Jonker, who has continued outstanding consistent play after my endorsement of his "game". The ability of Jonker Kong to overcome the power of the paphoops curse is truly impressive :) :)

While Jonkey Kong's (It is Jonkey with a "y". I know because I stole it from those clever Carleton students) ability to circumvent the curse is impressive, has anyone noticed what Sutherland has been doing? His points the last 8 games:

Last night against the Scots, he had 10 assists and two dunks. He has been guarding the best perimeter player (Brown, Nicoli, etc.) and he and Davis are developing a rapport. Davis fed him on the dunks. They pounded Mac and the Mac players started to get pretty chippy. They undercut Sutherland and fouled Davis hard on a steal and a breakaway for a layup; a flagrant was called. I suppose when the reality of another o'fer season is dawning you might get a little chippy.

Anyone...anyone...DP, Papahoops any other sane poster is welcome to comment...

Wabbit — What can I say? They looked bad. Like, very bad. It was painful to watch most of the game. Plus, your boys clearly were gassed in the second half. But it's hard to blame Kalland for sticking with his starters. Check out his bench production: 0-5 FG, 0 points, 3 boards, 1 assist, 8 turnovers in 51 minutes.

Check out those numbers again. Do you really want to argue with me about this? As everyone knows, I'm more than willing :)

And just wait until UST unleashes the hounds on those Carlie guards. Nance could finish with 10 steals if Fritz gives him some extra run. Mark my words, it won't be pretty.

DP - I already told you. He went on the Kate Moss diet.

Who's arguing Willy Wanker? I thought I was just adding some commentary...
Let's see what I said...

  • I hear that Kalland installed a new offense 2 days prior to the GAC game. -  Fact
  • That might account for the 17 TOs by the Knights. – Fact
  • Typically the Knights don't turn the ball over like that. – Fact
  • Those are some pretty smart boys – Fact...Harvard of the Mid-West!
  • They will figure it out and turn it around. – Cautiously optimistic

Take a chill pill  :P

The first two points might be true, but that doesn't change the fact that Carleton is down a little this year. You can make all of the excuses you want, but outside of their starting five, you don't have to guard any of the bench players outside 10 feet. With a bench like that it doesn't matter what offense you have. Every team can just clog the middle and force them to be a perimeter jump shooting team, and they just don't have the shooters to win games like that. They have some nice players in their starting five which on some nights might carry them to victory but not on a consistent basis, especially against the top teams in the league. I wouldn't be surprised if they miss the playoffs this year. I'm not rooting for this cause Carleton has provided GAC so many tough games in the last 5 years and have been fun to watch, but things just aren't pointing to a lot of success this year.

What a difference a season makes eh? After UST, the Knights are the hottest team in the league. Papa is right in that Theison is turning into a player. I overheard one Knight say that the other teams don't change what they do so they are ready for them. This implies that the Knights do change their approach. I'm not smart enough to know.

On another subject I have seen the Johnnies play three games. Two against the Knights and one against the Auggies. They don't look good. They won't win another game this season. Heh heh... :D

Knights punish the Oles 76-50 and it wasn't that close! Nice multi-view cameras on the live feed.

Free throw attempts leader, anyone??  It's the easiest of the questions.  Who consistently takes it to the hole?

The answer to the bonus question was rather surprising to me.

Will Wright (SP?). I really have no clue.

Bethel 82, Saint Mary's 79
St. Thomas 75, St. Olaf 47
Hamline 84, Macalester 57
Carleton 84, Saint John's 68
Gustavus 79, Concordia 72

And suddenly SJU is tied with Hamline for fourth place - 1/2 game behind Auggie Tech

How about those Knights? Two good wins this week against GAC and SJU. Seth Jonker (Jonkey Kong) has really stepped up his game this year scoring inside and out. Rosett is rebounding and scoring and the whole team is playing really good defense. In the first half yesterday the Knights got all those buckets that could go either way in a game. In the second half the Johnnies put on a press that Davis handled with his almost boring ease. He is an interesting guard that may be the best in the league at getting the ball up court. Against the Tommies press he would wait for the double team and then make the right pass. No flash, he rarely dribbles behind the back or through his legs, just a move and go. Good contributions from the freshman...the Knights are starting to play as a team.

I hate to see wasted potential. It's too bad when young people screw up their lives. Maybe White is just sick of basketball. I hope he figures it out and finds something that makes him happy.
