Is there still any debate over whether Panner deserves first team all-CCIW? There shouldn't be.

Of course there is. There are several deserving candidates and it is very hard to get 2 players on the 1st team especially when you aren't the conference champion. There are several players to argue over the last 3 spots for 1st team.

Given Panner's level of play in recent games, I am inclined to think he might get the first team nod over McCrary. I wouldn't be surprised either way, but given Panner's play on both ends of the court, I think he deserves it more than Tim.

Wheaton over Elmhurst 82-61.

It was actually a 3-point game at half, but Wheaton opened the second half with the hot hand and an 11-0 run.

Ben Panner scores 34 points for what I'm going to guess is the most productive offensive night of his career (beats his previous high of 30, all on 3-pointers last season in Kenosha).

Not only was it a great job by the Crazies et al, but they out-performed and even out-attended the Wheaton football team who usually compose a significant amount of whatever vocal and energetic student contingent shows up to a Wheaton game.  Where was the football team yesterday?  Did they miss the 5 p.m. start time?

The interesting thing about the football team is that they haven't formed a student section all season. Curiously enough, however, they all sit in the same section they used to stand in, around 4-5 rows higher up, with very calm demeanors.

I wonder if someone complained about their rowdiness at basketball games, leading to a top-down decision. After years of being a major presence in games, I can't imagine that simple laziness would prevent them from organizing.

Hats off to the NPU student section, especially for continuing to support their team even down by double digits late in the second half. It was entertaining to watch the NPU students in the same section as the Wheaton students who have recently begun wearing trash cans to basketball games painted with the letters T.H.U.N.D.E.R. I don't think I've ever heard chants of OFFENSE and DEFENSE coming from the same section before.

Video clip of the final 21 seconds of the Illinois Wesleyan - Wheaton game. Includes Sean Johnson's 3-pointer to give IWU their first lead of the second half and Ben Panner's pull up jumper to set up Andrew Jahn's put back layup as time expires. I especially enjoy watching the crowd reactions to the two baskets:

Kent Raymond receives the Today's Top VIII Award in Atlanta

http://athletics.wheaton.edu/news/2010/1/17/GEN_TopVIII.aspx?path=gen

One Raymond quotable from the night:

QuoteIt was particularly inspiring to stand beside those that received awards for their courage and valor in overcoming unbelievable obstacles to be where they are today. One moment in particular that I will never forget is when Lt. Colonel Gregory Gadson, a former Army football player, walked across stage and shared how many of the lessons he learned as a student-athlete gave him the strength to overcome the loss of both of his legs while serving in Afghanistan. While this is just one of the many incredible people I had the opportunity to meet, Lt. Colonel Gadson's humility and perseverance made a lasting impression on me.

Spencer Shultze started in place of Jake Carwell, which was odd. Jake played and appeared fine. I wonder why the change?

I wondered about the same thing, and I'm not completely sure either. I wonder if it has anything to do with Schultze being the more productive scorer of the two. Wheaton has been looking for another offensive weapon all season, and maybe this is a reaction to going 2-2 on the road in the last four games. In Wheaton's last five games, Carwell has scored 5,1,8,4 and 6 points (7.0 ppg on the season) to Schultze's 12,14,21,6, and 4 (9.0 ppg). Although Schultze is the scorer, Carwell is a great all-around role player.

But it could just as easily be one-game thing.

Congratulations to Kent Raymond on his latest NCAA award.  2010 Today's Top VIII Award.

In case anyone is at all curious about how Kent Raymond has been doing in Espana... I just stumbled across this link to his stats:

http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=ESP&PlayerID=124387

Averaging 20 minutes off the bench:
6.8 PPG
50% FG%
28% 3-point FG%
80% FT%
1.1 Rebound/game
0.5 Steals/game
Season High: 20 points on 7-9 shooting.

I would think this is pretty respectable for his first year of pro ball.

Wheaton 127
Grinnell 100

Tim McCrary with a triple-double: 35 pts, 18 rebounds, 10 assists
Jake Carwell with a double-double: 16 pts, 10 rebounds, 9 assists
Spencer Schultze had a double-double with 24 pts, 10 rebounds

Wheaton held a sizeable lead at halftime, but Grinnell played fairly evenly with the Thunder in the second half to keep the score respectable, aided by a healthy dose of free throws (37 attempts total in the game).

Wheaton out-rebounded Grinnell 59-28, with 114 points in the paint and 76 off fast break. Grinnell won the turnover battle 15-23 while going 14-46 (30%) from 3-point range.

Looking forward to seeing "The Circus" in person after having to settle for a radio broadcast of the game last year. Grinnell lost some key players last year, so it doesn't appear that the game will be as nail-biting as much of the game was last year.

I'm curious what posters think opponents can learn from a game against Grinnell, besides evaluating their ballhandlers and ability to beat the press?

Wheaton UNDER 123 points

McCrary OVER 31 points (I believe he had 32 last year, with Wiele still in the mix)

Carwell OVER 23 (but not by much)

Wheaton 3-pt FGA OVER 2

Grinnell 3-pt FGA UNDER 51

Wheaton turnovers UNDER 24

I think Wheaton does a slightly better job holding onto the ball and scores around 120 to account for a few less offensive weapons than last season. Wheaton likes the 3-ball, and after going 0-4 last year against Grinnell last year I think they sink a couple tonight. Spread prediction: Wheaton 120, Grinnell 99

Wheaton vs "The System" tonight (Grinnell)...and a bad Grinnell team at that (1-6).

Wheaton points (over/under) = 123

Tim McCrary points (over/under) = 31

Jake Carwell points (over/under) = 22

Wheaton 3-point FGA (over/under) = 2

Grinnell 3-point FGA (over/under) = 51

Wheaton turnovers (over/under) = 24

Great to see Studebaker make a difference for the Chiefs today, starting for the injured Mike Vrabel.

From ESPN.com:

QuoteLinebacker Andy Studebaker, making his first NFL start, picked off Roethlisberger's pass 2 yards deep in the end zone in the third quarter and motored to the Steelers 8 before running back Rashard Mendenhall dragged him down.

Video clip of Andy Studebaker's 94-yard Interception Return:

On Special Teams, it also looks like Studebaker made a key block to set up a 97-yard Kickoff Return to start the game. You can see Studebaker (#96) at 0:16 and 0:37 into the Highlight reel.

Big stop by McMullen.

Big defense for the Thunder, big break for the team

Offense needs to tie their shoelaces...

Not that the weather will affect my attendance at tomorrow's game, but here are the projected game conditions for Naperville tomorrow:

There is a 20% chance of precipitation during the night, so the field may get a bath, but it's unlikely.

Kickoff
46 degrees, partly cloudy
20% chance of precipitation
Wind out of the West at 15 mph

By 3:00 pm
46 degrees, Sunny
0% chance of precipitation
Wind from the West at 14 mph

Go Thunder!

It appears Bethel will have live video of the game today, which can be accessed here: http://athletics.bethel.edu/sports/2007/11/12/audiowebcasts.aspx

Thanks for the Link, Wahoo. I've been looking forward to this day for a long time!

Wheaton posters----

Good odds for a starting 5 of Garriott, Panner, Carwell, McCrary, & Jahns?

Assuming Garriott has indeed committed to Wheaton (and I'm putting my faith in Q's source here)...

This is entirely speculation on my part, but I can't really see Carwell starting at center. He's an excellent role player and was a huge asset when complementing an established center (like Wiele this past year), but doesn't strike me as the type of defender to handle post duty. However, Wheaton might just go with 2F/3G, since I'm not completely sure who else Wheaton would play in that position. It really comes down to the tone coach wants to set. Spencer Schultz has the best body for the post, but has a lot of work to do to be ready for varsity. Does anyone know if Brad Smith is returning for the Thunder?

AndOne, I think your starting 5 is solid, but I wouldn't be surprised if Wheaton tries to develop a big and bring Jahns off the bench. Perhaps...

G Garriot
G Panner
F McCrary
F Carwell
C Smith or Shultze

Just a note of interest... Wheaton could potentially have 3 transfers in the starting lineup next season with Garriot, Panner and Carwell.
