BSC will not be eligible for the SCAC tournament til 2012. Although they will not be eligible next season for the SCAC, they will be eligible for the NCAA.

They are a very good team. I agree with Frank we were in both of those games he mentioned. Daniel Sarisky would have made a huge difference if he were still around. OU has a good team and could possibly surprise some people.

I looked at the roster for BSC (not BSU, infielddad).  One senior, 17 juniors, 7 sophs, 8 frosh.  That team is going to be one handful next year when they are finally eligible for a SCAC championship.  A 4.44 team ERA is nothing to sneeze at, even if they aren't playing the heavy hitters in the West, and with virtually the whole team with another year under their collective belts, they'll be dangerous.   It'll give Coaches Scannell and Page yet another challenge to deal with.    ;)

Oglethorpe takes two of three from Depauw this weekend. It could have easily been 3-3 too. Lost that game 8-7 but led for most of it. Getting some players back has really helped. The team seems to have refound their identity and are getting some nice pitching performances while the bats are heating up at the same time. This Eastern division is going to be interesting the rest of the way.

I just talked to Jeff Debaldo. Top 3 teams from each division go, with BSU still not eligible this year or next either.

Yes, we are hurting badly. Backup catcher has now been injured too. With a big series against Depauw coming up and our starters still hurt, it might be tough. But, the pitching is looking better. Just need the bats to start going.

Frank, I have a question. How many teams from each division go to the playoffs this year...AND, is BSU eligible this year?

Frank,

Here is the assestment on OU. Injuries, injuries, injuries and some inconsistent pitching. The injury bug has hit them very hard during the 7-game losing streak. They were 10-3 and they lost a couple of key players and they continue to go down. Pilger #2 hitter and CF is done for the year with a broken hand. Check out his numbers before he got hurt. He was the run producer in that lineup. #6 hitter Manai FR RF went down with a right hand injury and they haven't won since he went down. They have a completly revamped OF including their starting 1B playing LF. This past weekend at Rhodes they lost their starting catcher for 2 of the 3 games, who also is the #5 hitter. Rizzo couldn't play third on Sunday with a dislocated shoulder and their starting SS had a ankle injury.

So, you take out the #2 hitter who was hitting .470 and was leading the SCAC in HR before he got hurt, the #5 hitter who is hitting .340 and has thrown out 31% of bases stealers and take out the #6 hitter who was hitting .355 you are left with a weakened lineup. Throw in some inconsistent pitching, BAM, 7-game skid. For a team just starting to get good, they dont have a ton of depth. I realize injuries are part of the game but when you lose 3 of your top players it is tough on any team. Eventually they will get there but losing one third of your lineup is tough to replace at this level.

Of course this past weekend it didn't help that SS Cornwell went 1 for the series and 3B Rizzo went 1 for the series. Just not enough offense right now to sustain rallys. A trademark of this team early was their ability to score in bunches...I still think this team will make a serious run, some of these guys will get healthy and when they put their healthy players back in that lineup they can beat anyone. They have some solid arms, but they are just young and inexperienced.

Ogelthorpe wins again tonight against Washington and Lee! Joe Parillo comes off the bench to hit a walk off grand slam in his first at bat of the season to send OU to an 11-10 win. Again OU shows they are something special this year. OU now sits at 6-1 with some tough wins against good programs already. Up tomorrow is another one with Lagrange coming in for a 3PM matchup.

Yes it was another sweet win for OU. In addition to the offense listed below, Andy Ferry and Adam Brazenas each drove in 3 runs as well. In fact, hitters 3,4,5,and 6 drove in 11 between them! Freakin JJ and Pil are simply on fire.  Neal Amos (Fr) also pitched 4+ innings of shutout ball in middle relief. I think he picked up the win too. Brad Brickhouse threw the 9th and shut them down 1-2-3. Brad pitched his first pitches today since having Tommy John surgery in 2008. Was very nice to see. The Petrels seem to be clicking right now. Let's hope they can keep it up!

Oglethorpe went crazy at the plate again today this time versus Washington & Lee. OU was down 7-4 early but put up 10 unanswered runs en route to a 14-7 final. Another solid win versus a south region opponent. Brendan Pilger went 4-4 with 4 runs, JJ Rizzo was 4-5 with 2 RBI and FY Nick Manai had 3 hits and 3 RBI's.

The two teams face each other again Monday at 4pm.

Oglethorpe beats Atlanta Christian today 11-2. Makes OU 4-1 on the young season. Tough games coming up with Washington and Lee (2-21 & 22) and Lagrange (2-23). OU is really looking good thus far. These next three games will be a good test for the battling Petrels. Last night Hoban went 8 1/3 with 10K's and 2ER. Tonight Cornwell pitched 8 and gave up just the two runs. Awesome fun! ;D ;D ;D 8-)

Via Text message I have learned that Oglethorpe has defeated Piedmont today 6-2 @ Piedmont.

You are correct. Junior Mark Hoban went 8 and 1/3 for the win. OU now has wins over both Piedmont and Emory so far this young season. The bats are on fire and now the arms are getting there too. Hope we keep it up!!!

I didn't see Rhodes play, but if they won all their games they have to be pretty darn good. After sitting and freezing for the 4 OU games, I wasn't gonna hang around to see anything else. I needed hot chocolate or cold beer immediately after every game. ;) ;)

OU definitely came back to earth this weekend. We gave up 12 runs in every game. That being said, Sarinsky did hurt himself a bit and is day to day with his back. Piedmont transfer Mark Hoban pitched very well for OU. But one of our up n comers, Andrew Llano popped his toe with a foul ball and was done after a game and a half and he never did get to pitch. He was really coming on as a pitcher. We'll know more about the toe next week.
Over all it was a rough weekend for Oglethorpe, but we did win one game and really were in the other games til late.

The bats have cooled a bit but no one could have expected 4 or 5 guys to hit over .400 forever. Steven Archer did have a career day, going 6 for 6 with 5 doubles. I bet he had the time of his life that night. It was fun to watch. Andy Farrey and JJ Rizzo had good series too. Matt Cornwell could also emerge as a nice starting pitcher as he threw well every time he pitched. We shall see. Have Lagrange on Weds and they are pretty tough. At least the weather will be in the 50's that day and not 40 with another 10 degrees off for wind chill. Man it was brutal.

Ferrum looked like they have a real good club and they are very well coached too. I would look for them to make some noise this season.

Lucas is on fire and the entire middle of the order is getting it done with the exception of one little weakness which hopefully will start lighting up it soon, John Hale needed this win in a bad way and hopefully his confidence will show through. All in all 2 good wins for OU but your right if they play tonight it will be there toughest test of the young season.

Yes, Lucas is on fire big time. So is Llano as he also closed out both games on the hill. Sirisky didn't play last year as he did have some health issues. He is just a sophmore. The lil weaknes is coming around too. Went 2-5 last night. I would think we'd have given Emory a great game tonight. Frank is right, we needed to rest some arms for the 4 games this weekend. It's gonna be cold for Friday night's game. I look for OU to really have the best season it's had in years and be competitive in every game as the pitching and hitting seem to be clicking.  At least I sure hope so.

Opening day for the Stormy Petrels tomorrow at Lagrange. I can't wait. Will be our first game and I am freakin pumped! I know that OU is no powerhouse, but we really have improved (I think) and we'll be better than in years past. I know Lagrange can hit as I watched the Milsaps game. Hope we can hit, play D, and get some decent pitching. My son said the team is excited too. Anyways, I know I'm geeked!

......now back to the D3boards Milsaps updates...lol :D :D ;D

Oglethorpe plays 9 on the road and 6 at home. Is Birmingham Southern eligible for postseason play this year?

Less than 1 month until baseball season officially gets underway in the SCAC! Less than 2 months until non-conference opening games start for the SCAC! I know I'm excited, how about everyone else? Haven't heard a lot of talk about the year yet, so I figured I would maybe get us going.

I believe OU has the talent to finally make some noise this year. I know this has been a recurring theme the past two or three years, but I can honestly tell all of you that this is it. The Petrels finally have a tremendous 1/2 punch on the bump, and a quality 3rd starter. The bullpen is the X factor in my eyes as it will be consisted of mostly all underclassmen, however they have the talent to succeed. The offense is the peak of the Petrels this season as they return all players on offense, and have added 3 or 4 bats that any team would die for.  And last but not least, the part of the  petrels that has caused them the most problems the last couple of years- defense.  This may be the smoothest fielding infield the Stormy Petrels have had...EVER. It looks to be a very exciting year in the SCAC and hopefully OU will live up to my usual preseason talk.  How's everyone else look?

I have to agree with you Petey. Although I am new to all this, I do think OU will be much improved this year. I am not saying OU will be a powerhouse, but I do think they will be much improved over the past few seasons...at least I hope they will ;D ;D.

A very slick infield indeed. With Soph Cornwell manning SS all year and Freshman Jake moving in at 2B, AB(also a Freshman) behind the plate, defensively we should be very strong and improved up the middle. We'll be strong on the corners too as two returning upper classmen Archer and Riggins will man those spots. Llano moves back to the outfield where he is strongest along with senior (one of only 2) "Tex" Lucas. The other spot I think is still up for grabs but either way, this team looks to be pretty decent. Hitting will also be improved, and they were not too shabby last year. Guys like Ben Giddens and super soph Andy Farrey can really hit, as can every one of the starters. Pitching? Absolutely improved as Sam returns, and 2 new transfers look to be top starters. Sarinsky (from N Ga..a D1 school) throws in the high 80's to low 90's consistently, and the new kid coming in from Piedmont College should help alot. Sean Tuttle (the other senior) also throws well making for a much improved and more seasoned pitching staff.

I can't wait! I look forward to seeing and hearing about the other teams also. I hear Depauw is always strong and I know Rhodes is the same.  I hope we can compete. I think we can. Fun stuff.
