Congratulations to Hope's Maura McAfee for being named MIAA player of the week (3rd time this season, 8th in her career) and for being named to the D3Hoops national team of the week!  Maura broke Hope's career rebounding record while averaging 21 points and 15 rebounds in 2 games last week.

Haven't seen Victoria Swift since wwjjdd reported her knee brace.   I'm assuming the MRI results were not good.  Very unfortunate for her and the Dutch, she was making great contributions as a frosh and was one of the better 3 pt shooters in D3.
Yes, Hope has lost two fine guards--Tyra Smith and Victoria--to season-ending injuries.  Although it could wish to have them both (or even either of them) as they look ahead to the post-season, the team has nevertheless exceeded expectations, with an average 30-point victory margin.

I noticed that an new player, Vanessa Freberg #04 G, is now listed on the roster.  Replacing Victoria I assume.

First opportunity for me to see 6' Hope freshman Francesca Buchanan.  In just 17 minutes of her first Hope-Calvin game she shoots 7 of 12, with 2 of 2 from the line, for a total of 16 points.  She also had 4 steals and 7 boards.  A great player off Hope's bench, often giving Maura a break.  Very aggressive around the basket.  Anyone know anything about her high school career at Sparta?

I was also hoping to see fellow frosh Victoria Swift, who has started 3 games for Hope already at the guard position, and is averaging just over nine points a game.  Anyone know why she did not play?

Unrelated, it looks like Hope's star recruit from last year, when she was a HS junior, is still planning to come to Hope:
www.celinaking.com  We should be well stocked at the guard position, especially point guard.
She was at the Hoops Luncheon on Monday with a brace/cast on her knee.  She hurt it in practice and according to Moe they were waiting on the results of an MRI which were to be reported Monday afternoon.  Too bad, should the results not be good,  as she and Buchanan are both contributing greatly as Freshpersons and point to a wonderful future for Hope.

Although not a prolific contributor, I have learned a lot by reading the thoughts of others.  The past 10 pages have taught me nothing except to distance myself from this board.  In dem Sinne.

Although I’m not the brightest bulb in the pack when it comes to basketball terminology, I also am not a rank novice.  That being the case, could I ask posters to expand an acronym that may not necessarily be commonly known to the average fan the first time it is used in a comment?.  I was stumped at ORTG until I googled it and found that ORTG (or ORtg) was offensive rating and DRTG (or Drtg) was defensive rating.  Perhaps the fact that I wouldn’t cross a room to turn on the TV to watch an NBA (National Basketball Association) game accounts for my ignorance.  Oh, there is no need to expand MIAA or NCAA.  I have a handle on those two.

Sophomore Mandy Traversa made 8 of 13 3-pointers tonight plus two other field goals to lead Hope with 28 points in the win over Albion.  She was awesome.

What's the deal with the odd starting times for the Men's BB games this year?  Calvin/Hope game in Feb starting at 6PM?

Discussed a little this summer.  It happens when one site is hosting a men's and women's game.  The women get the late game in 2015.  Calvin women are hosting Olivet that night in front of a quickly exiting crowd.
This something new?  Was there an issue with the old way?
As a big fan of the Dutchmen, but an even bigger fan of the Dutch, I have no problem with this year's schedule.  It's not your father's Oldsmobile, and the times they are a changing.

And what can you say about Britanny Berry?  . . . . She's just a joy to watch.
I'll say . . . her misdirection passing, her amazing shooting, and her expressive joy the midst of play . . . she is something special.

AMEN!!!!!

How about them apples?!  Augustana (D3) knocks off Bradley (D1) in an exhibition game.   When's the last time you saw a write-up noting a DI team "struggled to score in the paint" against a D3 team....that was written by the D1 team??

Here are the recaps:

Gotta admit that I was more than a little disappointed that it was Bradley and not fellow MVC conference member Drake that Augustana knocked off--would have been pretty entertaining to listen to oldknight try to explain that one! ;D

Well my Bulldogs play D3 Coe College tomorrow afternoon so we'll see if any 'splainin will be required. If I still rented my former digs at The Nadine, just two blocks from Drake's Knapp Center, I would go and give a first hand account of the game.

One of my favorite summers of all-time was the summer between my 1L and 2L years in Des Moines. I had kept my promise to my wife not to play any hoops my first year of law school but by that spring it seemed I wasn't going to be a washout so I started to find my way to the gym. I took one summer class that ended mid-morning. After a couple hours of study and lunch I headed back to campus and each day--starting at 1:30--pickup ball commenced. The first day I did that--just prior to Memorial Day--I found myself in a game with some exceptionally good players. "Holy Smokes" I said to myself, "These guys are really good!" As it turned out, the varsity team reserved each afternoon for pickup ball that would also include alumni. For whatever reason, they let me play that first day and apparently I didn't embarrass myself too badly because they let me come back and play all summer--five days a week. Every game was a track meet and you had better keep your head on a swivel because any change of possession--even after a made basket--saw the ball going the other direction at lightening speed.

Somewhere around July 1, a new alumni player everyone respectfully called Wayne showed up. He was a 6'2" guard and I often wound up guarding Wayne. He was the finest athlete I ever played with or against and was in phenomenal shape. I eventually found out why--the NBA season had just ended and Wayne Kreklow had an NBA championship ring for his efforts that year with the Celtics. It would be his only season in the NBA but he was two time MVC All-Conference player and still ranks fifth on Drake's career scoring list. When I asked him that summer if he was going back to the NBA he casually said "No; I've been invited to try out for the US National Volleyball team" and went on to rave about one of the team's players, Karch Kiraly, someone I had never heard of before.  Kreklow didn't make that team (which won Olympic gold in Los Angeles) but I think he was an alternate. Kreklow and his wife are now co-coaches for the University of Missouri women's volleyball team

Wayne was a good guy, no ego, who wasn't there to try and show everyone how good he was. He just wanted to play and play he could. Later I found out he scored nearly 1500 points at Drake. In a game against Memphis State he scored 43, going 19-22 from the field, with several of his baskets coming from what would later be known as 3 point range. Guarding him that summer (at least I think that's what I was doing) was both challenging and thrilling but Kreklow never went 19-22 against me so I considered that a victory of sorts. When I picked up my wife from her job late every afternoon she always asked why I looked so tired but competing against Kreklow put me in the best shape of my life.

Kreklow was a star at Neenah High School, just down the road from here.  He also played in the CBA with the Wisconsin team based in Oshkosh, I can't recall its name anymore.  Great guy.

According to Wikipedia, a team called the Wisconsin Flyers played their games at the Oshkosh North Fieldhouse.  Oshkosh is about halfway between Milwaukee and Green Bay/Neenah.  The Wiki article on Kreklow says he "played one season for the Maine Lumberjacks of the Continental Basketball Association in 1979–80, averaging 9.6 points per game."  The Wiki article on the Wisconsin Flyers lists him among those players playing at least one game for the Flyers.

Probably more than I or anyone else needs to know on this subject.  :)

For what it’s worth, Brittany Berry missed the last 8± minutes of the first half, which didn’t help the cause.  However, as stated above, this was an amazing year from a great group of young ladies and I really can’t wait until next year when they should have Angelique and Rebecca back in addition to the usual 2-3 three contributing freshpersons that Mo always seems to come up with.  I also have good reason to believe that Brittany will be back as well.  Life is good!

Hope 60 / Wisconsin Lutheran 54
Scary moment in the 2nd half when Maura McAfee went down under the basket after a rebound.  They treated her calf and re-wrapped her ankle and she went back in later, limping only slightly.  Hope shot poorly for most of the first half, but had a small spurt just before the half.  Hannah Doell had a great game scoring and had her usual great defense and rebounding.  The result was in doubt until the end, leads varying from 2-6 points in Hope's favor.  But a big 3 by Brittany Berry put the game out of reach.

Hollend Sentinel story on tonight's game.  Pay particular attention to the picture of the celebration after the win.  To me, this typifies the Hope Women's BB program.  Congrats to Coach Mo and all the ladies on the team.

Flying Dutch jump to #1 in the USA Today/WBCA poll, landing all 8 #1 votes.  Whitman #2, Thomas More #3, and DePauw drops to #4.
With two key starters out with injuries (making an NCAA run a much bigger challenge), I'd say that an undefeated regular season ending with a #1 ranking is plenty enough to celebrate.  What a great season.  This team has been a joy to watch, and anything more is just icing on the cake.

Very well stated.  Thanks pointlem!  :)

And the next several years should be fun as well!!

A rather ho-hum 83-63 win for Calvin at VNA against an overmatched Olivet squad, though the hard-working Comets made the game a little closer than the final score indicated. Not much to remark on except the exceptional four minute stretch for Jordan Daley in the second half when he scored precisely half his game high 22 points. It was a solid floor game for Daley who went 8-12 shooting with 5 rebounds, one block, 2 steals, 7 assists and 0 turnovers.
Now, if he can match that performance against H#*(, it would be even more impressive.

No doubt. Especially the zero turnover line.

As a Hope fan, I'm also willing to give the nod to Tyler Kruis.  His senior status will also help his chances.  DJ Beckman (who should be at Hope, rather than scoring 25 against Hope!) will have two more years to accrue honors.

I agree that Kruis is the most likely choice for MVP. It's really tough to win that award if you're not at least a junior. I went through the MIAA website list and over the last 50+ years the only players I could identify who were named MVP while a sophomore were Jeremy Veenstra, Mark Veenstra (who also won as a freshmen) and Ray Ritsema (in 1958). Eidson has had a nice year and been important to Hope's success but I think NVA will get more votes for the award. I like Beckman a ton but when you play for a team that finishes seventh, you basically have no shot at being named MVP.

Let's not forget, Hank Sauer, Ernie Banks (2), and Andre Dawson, all of whom won while playing for a 2nd Division team.  (Guess which one)
