Oneonta's Steve Juedes becomes the first pitcher from a school other than Cortland to win the Don Axtell Pitcher of the year award. Congrates to him, he deserved it, 30 2/3 scoreless ball in conference play, that is something. He gets named to the 1st team as well. Filak gets 2nd team along with Scott Dubbin SS and Chris Brady 3rd base. Ryan Myers gets snubbed.

I wondered what happened to Dougher, I looked for him in the Blue Jays minors but didn't find him, he got released? that's to bad I was rooting for him, I wonder why, he seemed to be doing pretty good in the minors. You probably are right about this years draft but I just think that a kid like Juedes deserves a shot, he gets people out, his ERA proves that, he is a very good pitcher and I don't think he got a whole bunch of teaching at Oneonta, if I was making a late pick for a team, I would look at him and say what the heck, 2 SUNYAC ERA titles in his Junior and Senior years, great size 6'5, knows how to pitch, setup hitters, maybe they could increase his velosity and have something, geez even in the 40th round, what's the risk to them.

I think that Steve Juedes should get a shot in the pros, this kid put up pretty good numbers as a senior, providing it holds up because I guess he could get 1 more start, he currently leads all pitchers with a 1.77 ERA, last year he lead all of the SUNYAC with a 2.11 His numbers are better then Matt Tone in every area except strikeouts, better ERA, better Bat avg against, better walk ratio. Over the last two years in 125 innings he has a 1.94 ERA, 103 hits allowed only 33 walks and a respectable 94 K's, I know he doesn't have the huge 90 mph fastball but he does have a terrific slider, he is 6'5 and probably could add to his fastball with pro coaching, he does get people out, he has proved that over the last two years. Just my opinion.

I think Bob is right on with his 1st team all SUNYAC and I agree with Steve Juedes as Pitcher of the year, Not only did he have a ERA of 0.00 in the conference games but he didn't allow a run unearned as well. He also leads in ERA overall at 1.77, if it holds up he will have won that ERA title 2 straight years as he won it last season at 2.11. In my opinion he got the shaft last year when he didn't get named to any all conference teams. Just incredible to me that Ferchen had possibly the Pitcher of the year and Dave Filak who probably will make a All- conference team and Jeff Carter the Freshman pitcher from Clifton Park won won 6 games and could be rookie of the year plus a better hitting team then they have had recently and Oneonta doesn't make the tourney, just a horrible job of managing in my opinion, the two games that just stand out in my mind is blowing a 6-0 lead in plattsburgh and a 5-1 lead in Oswego.

What a season for Oneonta and their coach Rick Ferchen, 1st they lose a very tough DH at Plattsburgh, 1-0 and then the huge 6-0 lead that Filak lost, then they go to Cortland and actually score some runs but get swept anyway, then they go to Oswego and in game two blow a 5-1 lead, Ferchen goes to the wrong relief pitcher when he does not go to Andreson, who has been excellent all season, in the game he absoulutely has to have until the game is 15-5 then he goes to Andreson, Oneonta comes up with 8 in the 9th but the hole was a little to big by then and they lose 15-13.

Oneonta beats Union 7-2, but the real news is Oneonta throws Juedes for 6 2/3 he gives up 1 in the 7th, ending a 22 inning scoreless streak for him but now I don't think they bring him back on 3 days rest to face Cortland, if so they shouldn't have thrown him that long today in a non league game.

Well like a lot of you guys said about Oneonta before the season started, it's about their hitting, In plattsburgh Juedes gives them 8 scoreless and they can't score themselves, then in a stunner Filak can't hold a 6 run lead, that could be the game that will come back to haunt them. Now what does Ferchen do, does he throw Juedes and Filak at Cortland, will Oneonta score off Tone and Ratliff? they could get swept and burn their best two pitchers, then throw their 3 and 4 at Oswego, what if they split then they are done. I think he might throw 3 and 4 at Cortland, then throw Juedes and Filak at Oswego where he should get a sweep and throw them again at New Paultz and prey for a sweep and 7-5. Will be interesting to see who he throws.

Should be interesting to see what Ferchen does with his rotation, I imagine Filak and Juedes will pitch Monday's DH with Plattsburgh, but on the 18th and 19th Oneonta plays Cortland and Oswego, who does he throw at Cortland? both Filak and Juedes or does he split them up, will he risk his Num 3 and 4 at Oswego? Fredonia did win a game at Oneonta, but it was over there number 4 pitcher, Filak shut them out, Ferchen saved Juedes for Brockport and then they went with there Number 3 Carter in game 2. In my opinion Fredonia is improved but I think Oneonta will take 2nd.

Bob, I do know the Filak story, he was a catcher in High School at Burnt Hills, he never pitched in High School, on his summer American Legion team one day he was goofing off and threw some pitches, the coach noticed how hard he threw and asked him to try and pitch, after he worked with him some he was impressed, the coach called Ferchen and told him to take a look at him as a pitcher and the rest is history. The point about the guys in Twi light league is that Siena and Albany St are D1 players and St Rose guys are D2, there are some Binghamton guys too and a bunch from assorted Sunyac teams as well, in my opinion Twi-light league is the best summer league in the Capital District, Is it the Cape Cod league? No but it's pretty good. They have had several ex major leaguers play in that league, some before they made it to the bigs and some after they got out.

Starvin Marvin, I agree totally that a lot of people throw around MPH numbers have no idea what they are really looking at, I am not one of them, I know what a 90 mph pitcher looks like, and like you said there are not many in the SUNYAC but one of them is Dave Filak, I know for a fact that he has been clocked as high as 93 mph.  There was a guy with a radar gun at the Oneonta game Sunday and he had Juedes at 84, now I seen Juedes last season pitch with a gun on him and that day he was topping out at 86, maybe what you guys said about mid season form and I'll add the warmer weather factor is the difference with him, because I seen him in the summer at Twi light league and he beat teams with some Siena guys, Albany St. guys, ex pros and he was throwing heat, maybe not 90 but it was close.  In my opinion Bob sounds pretty knowledgable to me, so if he says he seen Rob throw at 88 I believe him. But all the pitchers that you mentioned I have seen and I agree with you totally.

Bob, I was at the Oneonta- Brockport DH, I guess what I meant was that they never got a man to 3rd in the game and I thought Juedes was pretty much in command of the game, they did get several men to 2nd as you said. In the 2nd game I thought Oneonta was in trouble a couple of times when Zimmerman smashed a Homerun and then they loaded the bases with no outs, I thought the flood gates were going to open but they only scored 1 run, then a couple of innings later they loaded them again with no outs and again they only scored 1 run. I also agree that Juedes did not have an overpowering fastball, I would guess 84 or so, when I seen him in Twi-light league he was throwing harder, probably about 5 mph, he led the Twi-light league in strikeouts but he doesn't throw the same in college. He is a good pitcher but I expected to see a bigger fastball, he has a real good slider in my opinion.

Oneonta sweeps Brockport, Juedes shuts them out with a little help in game one 4-0, in game two Oneonta wins 6-3 behind Jeff Carter and Andreison, Brockport had their chances in game two, twice had the bases loaded with no outs and only managed 1 run each time. Juedes was not really threatened in picking up his 3rd win. Oneonta's hitting seems improved from last season.

No question about Cortland and how legit they are, the players don't make the schedule and Oneonta has some talented players despite whatever Florida schedule Rick Ferchen puts together. If my memory serves me correct, I would say they do OK in the SUNYAC, I think they make the post season nearly every season and I think just three years ago they tied Cortland for the top spot, including a season split with them but still the playoffs were held in Cortland and they lost. They may not be a National Power but they are a legitimate good team, in the most recent poll they did receive 27 votes and are just on the outside of the top 25. Never said they were better then Cortland, that would just be stupid, Cortland has been a national D3 power for years, all I said was that Oneonta could possibly get in the top 25 with a 12-0 start and they slipped up and went 11-1, and got 27 votes which I guess puts them at 30.

In the Oneonta 9 win streak they beat a D2 team twice and Washington was 3-0 when they beat them, if they go 12-0 they could get ranked in my opinion.

Myers and Flarherty did not go to florida with Oneonta, O-state pitching looking tough on the florida trip, Juedes 2-0, 3 runs in 14 1/3 innings, Filak 1-0 3 runs in 12 Innings, the other guys have pitched pretty well also, hitting has been better then expected without Myers, they have 3 games left, Washington College and a DH with Norwich, they could run the table in Florida and have a 12-0 start.
