Anyone remember Art Tuls, some kind of cousin of the current Mr. Basketball, nephew of Butts Kool?

He played at Calvin a little before Mark Veenstra's time. He was a terrific passer. If memory serves, in the pre-game warmup he would stand center court and pass left and right, up and down, behind his back, through his legs, to other players who would then be in position to shoot or lay it in.

If memory serves, he also led Calvin to a victory with a 40-point performance once (over Hope, not that it matters  ::))

Art Tuls was one of the most outstanding point guards that ever played in the MIAA.  His vision of the court was spectacular and his passes left defenders bewildered.  I remember watching him run Calvin's offense with Jim Vogelzang and Doug Taatjes who were also memorable players.  Hope simply did not have a chance in those days.

Sac:
Somewhere, several posts back, I acknowledged that Friday night was the first, and only, time I had seen Hope play this season.  Only with the game against Witt as perspective, I could not concur more with your analysis.  Witt completely took away the inside game.  When Hope could not hit their shots from the perimeter, they struggled.  I also was very impressed with the agility of Russ and Borchers for Witt.

Just for the record, I'm a Hope alum and a Hope fan.  I just call 'em as I see 'em.

Trust me, I follow Calvin as much as I follow Hope.  I'm aware that Calvin has won 2 national championships.  But, I can't recall the last time Calvin won a football game.  And, I watch a lot of basketball here in Ohio and Ohio kids are flatout better than Michigan kids.  Look at U of M's roster and see how many kids that truly contribute are from the state up north.  I hate to burst anyone's bubble but that's the way it is.

Last night was the first time I saw Hope play all season.  I live in Ohio and have watched MIAA teams play in Ohio over the past 20+ years.  With a few notable exceptions, I've seen Ohio teams outplay MIAA teams consistently.  Ohio basketball is much more physical than what I've seen from MIAA teams.  And, the reality is that MIAA will hardly ever get a call that goes their way in Ohio.  Wittenberg purely and simply outplayed Hope last night.
I've contended for many years that kids from Ohio outplay kids from Michigan in basketball, football and lacroose.  Nothing that I've seen lately has given me evidence to the contrary.
