This was pointed out to me tonight, thoughts?

Wednesday Feb 4, 2015

6 pm   Hope at Calvin  --men
8 pm   Olivet at Calvin  --women

Calvin actually has 3 6pm starts in a row on Wednesday

It appears the Title IX activists are at it again. A couple of them threatened to sue the GLIAC a few years ago, and rather than spend the time and money litigating the issue, the GLIAC backed down, and now the men and women alternate, with the men playing first one year and the women the next.

The results have been disastrous. Attendance for the men's weekday games is down when they play the early games (how many people can make it to a 6:00 game?) and women's attendance is the same. Also, when the men play the early game, the gym empties out after the end of the men's game, which is embarrassing for the women.

It's unfortunate someone doesn't stand up to these bullies, who would rather bankrupt college athletics than admit at most schools men's basketball is more popular than women's.

Re: Davenport: There may not be anything wrong with Davenport's application or its attempt to manage the required benchmarks for transferring to D2. It may simply be a numbers thing. As I said yesterday, D2 is taking in only ten new members a year. While that is a lot more than the four per year that D3 is currently taking in, it's still too narrow a pipeline in a year in which there are sixteen applicants who are aspiring to join D2. Perhaps the ten that made it are all a little better situated for D2 membership at the moment than is Davenport.

I'd put my money on Davenport getting into the D2 pipeline next year.

Other than their gym  which is pretty nice but still small for D2, I don't really think Davenport has D2 facilities (let alone D3).  They may have a long range plan based on D2 membership, I really don't know.    http://www.dupanthers.com/sports/2010/4/5/GEN_0405103312.aspx

The baseball team plays its home games at Kentwood High School, softball is off-campus, among other sports.

Far cry from GVSU, but then comparing any D2 to GVSU's facilities is pretty unfair.

GVSU's facilities aren't that great. Both Calvin and Hope's basketball facilities are far superior to GVSU's Fieldhouse.

My second-hand understanding is that Dan's injuries are not life-threatening and that he should be ok. Very thankful for that. Life can change in a heartbeat, can't it?

A little recruiting buzz from the Calvin camp:

Ryan Nadeau, the point guard for Class B quarter-finalist Dearborn Divine Child, has indicated he is coming to Calvin.

oldknight will recall that Divine Child spoiled Hudsonville Unity Christian's quest for a perfect season in the Class B state finals at Crisler Arena in 1973.  Trivia test:  Who coached Divine Child during that state championship year?

Nadeau is on Bank Hoops Class B All State Sixth Team. Dykstra is Third Team, so KVS is off to another strong start in recruiting this year. We'll have to see how everything works out, but with strong recruiting in the rising junior, sophomore, and freshman classes, I can't help but being very optimistic about the future of Calvin basketball (then again, I probably said the same thing last year).

Wow, congrats to Coach White and Adrian tonight.  They put on a clinic at Van Noord.  They were patient for the right shot, hit the open shots, and make you work for EVERYTHING.  Snikkers earned his 18 tonight.  KVS seemed strangely subdued tonight during the game, and even got called to the carpet a bit by Wentworth on the post game show.  After KVS said he was happy with the effort, Doug told him that he was sugarcoating it, and told him that he got beat a team that's not that great, Adrian at 6-5.  I think KVS was taken aback by the question.

As was I. That exchange was as frosty as the crisp evening air outside Van Noord. I also think Doug was quite wrong and showed disrespect to an Adrian team that is far better than his comment suggested. The game Adrian brought to Knollcrest campus would have probably beaten anyone in the MIAA tonight.

This appears to be Doug's last season covering Calvin basketball, so bear with it a little while longer.

Maybe it's just my imagination, but Wentworth seems more critical and is showing his frustration more during the broadcasts this year than any other I can remember.

The turnovers, poor decisions, and overall lack of basketball intelligence shown by Calvin all year are sickening. Now, they hit the road for tough games at Kalamazoo and Olivet. I'd say stick a fork in this team, they're just about done.

An excellent summary of Adrian/Calvin is posted today on KnightSlappy's blog. A worthy read, I think, for all MIAA fans.

http://tomaroonandgold.blogspot.com/

The last sentence of KnightSlappy's blog says it all: the Knights are "struggling". Unfortunately, it appears that unless they snap out of it very quickly and pretty much run the table the rest of the regular season, they will have to win the conference tournament to make the DIII tournament.

I was wondering how Kzoo's upset over Calvin would be viewed by Massey's "Least Likely Result"  section.

Least Likely Results

1 12/11 Keuka (406)              52    St Lawrence (298)        51  0.059
2 11/19 Elmira (361)             77 vs Albright (139)           70  0.085
3 11/18 MN Morris (265)          65 at Concordia Mhd ( 34)      63  0.099
4  12/7 NY Maritime (368)        72 at Farmingdale (255)        71  0.114
5  12/3 Pacific OR (240)         65 at Pac Lutheran ( 26)       63  0.125
6 11/20 Frostburg St (216)       56 at St Mary's MD ( 31)       54  0.137
7  12/5 Dallas Univ (384)        78 at SW Univ TX (310)         74  0.150
8 11/28 Loras (154)              63 at WI Platteville ( 42)     61  0.157
9 11/29 Marywood (285)           65 at Keystone (145)           59  0.168
10   1/8 Kalamazoo (215)          73 at Calvin ( 74)             68  0.182

If it were possible to look back at previous MIAA seasons, its pretty likely the two most least likely upsets to occur recently have both involved Kzoo beating Calvin.

2011 Kzoo 73 Calvin 68
2009 Kzoo 68 Calvin 66

Out of curiosity, anyone know the last time K beat Calvin @ Calvin?

No matter how you look at it, it was a bad, bad loss. The turnovers and overall lack of intelligence shown on the court are very disappointing. Yes, I know it's a young team which will naturally have its ups and downs, but on the other hand with Salo back there are 4 seniors who play substantial minutes.

OK, I'll try to resist the temptation to be glib, and I certainly won't gloat, but we got a taste last night of what the rest of the season could look like for Calvin.  The Knights came out with some fire and purpose, and, although Hope knocked them back on their heels a number of times, they showed the  ability and maturity (maybe for the first or second time this season) to weather the storm.  It's clear to me that there are enough offensive weapons to compensate for a dreadful night from the usually dominant Snikkers and the often-contributing Powell and DeBoer.
It was senior night last night -- but there is talent aplenty in the underclassmen.  Many of us are still waiting for the full emergence of Jordan Brink as a key offensive contributor, and let's hope that happens as soon as the Knights get a true point guard into the rotation.  As oldknight has mentioned, Kruis is steadily developing into a force with which to be reckoned.  A Hope poster asked if that was as well as Calvin can play.  I strongly suspect it is not.

Are Powell and Brink not "true point guards"? Interesting, because Tom Cleary said the same thing on the tv broadcast last night. With Salo graduating, I thought Powell and Brink were Calvin's point guards of the future.

Super Dutchman summed the game up very well.  Welcome to the board SD!

Rebounding became a bit timid after several early under the basket fouls.  Still, the discrepency wasn't entirely the fault of foul trouble.

Glad to have a first game under our belts, finally.  On to Friday.

Not to take anything away from Davenport, Grace, et al, but it doesn't help that those schools have played 6, 7, 8 games, and Hope and Calvin are playing their first or second game of the year.

Michael Fabiyi from Gary IN West Side HS is coming to Calvin next year. A 6-3 guard was being recruited by Ivy League schools such as Cornell, Penn, and Columbia. Saw a couple videos of him and he appears to be extremely athletic and a really solid defender.

Here is a really nice article on him

Sounds like another great pickup by Calvin. Decent size, and I like the athleticism and defensive ability. KVS has laid a great foundation with these last 2 recruiting classes.

I can understand why Hope fans are getting antsy, but usually one of the biggest reasons for wanting to get a new coach in place as soon as possible is to avoid disruptions in recruiting. Recruiting is over for this year, and Hope got a couple nice recruits, so I wouldn't think the delay in naming the new coach is hurting the program much.

KVS appears to have brought in a very strong recruiting class. As Oldknight said, there is talent and balance in the class, with a pg in Bouma, a center in Kruis, and a shooting guard in Brink. Vallie and Greene are 6-4 players who add some size and talent inside. We'll see how they turn out, but the class appears to be very good.

Now that the May 1 college decision day has come and gone, has Calvin received confirmation on its recruits? Last I heard, they were looking good for Tyler Kruis, Jalen Bouma, Mitchel Vallile, and Jacob Greene, with Jordan Brink of Illiana Christian a possibility.

It would be a plus to have Campbell and his experience back, but I would prefer to see him come off the bench. He seems like a "glue guy" to me--not outstanding in any one area of the game, but he can come in and give some quality minutes and do a little of everything.
