As a high school QB: Why on earth would I go to SJU?

Assuming one of these transfers pans out, I wonder if we'll see Dittbenner at a new position in the fall.  He's struck me as a great athlete, so I'd like to see him on the field.

It is notable that SJU seems to be the D1 QB transfer destination for those talented players who don't quite get a the shot at starting D1. They come to SJU and are in pass heaven, tossing the ball until their arm falls off.

I suspect you're right about high school QB's.

With Trey specifically, I'm surprised another FCS program didn't swallow him up. There are a lot of them in need of QB talent that competes for UND starts.  Maybe as a local-ish boy, the lure of the not-quite-Northwoods was too strong.

I would guess he didn't have many offers. He failed to win the job twice at a mid level FCS. I was thinking he may go low level NSIC, but probably jumped at the chance to go to SJU.

Quote from: Pat Coleman on December 18, 2024, 11:16:56 AMHow does one measure arrogance in officiating while watching on TV/screen?

Pat,

My comment regarding arrogance in Officiating was made in the context of the games I watched both in person and on TV during this season.  Officials often would huddle for several minutes only to emerge with a call that was controversial, at best, or a blatant misapplication of a rule and act as though the teams/players impacted had no grounds to question them or seek clarification......this occurred in favor of my teams, against my teams and for and against teams I have no rooting interest in.  It's just a problem that I hope can be addressed.

99.9% of the officials I've encountered have arrogance levels off the charts....

Players are on to next year. Fans can rehash, speculate, and bemoan all we want.

Quote from: DuffMan on November 13, 2024, 02:35:38 PMWhy would the MIAC give a damn about game times on the west coast this week if they didn't in any of the prior weeks?  They don't care when Linfield plays.  Week 11 is still regular season; after this week, NCAA dicates start times.

Yep, classic sju b*tch fest when a couple things don't go their way. Super funny actually.

In this day and age, it really is impossible to prevent teams from seeing game film. Even at the high school level. Probably not a great idea to alienate the fan base when you don't have to.

So, GAC gets 2nd place points in football despite being 5-3 in the conference, while SJU gets 3rd place points while being 7-1.  Makes total sense.

Only place in the entire sports world with that kind of math...
I was thinking that as well. The only and most fitting adjective to describe that is stupid.

I'm having deja vu.....

Furnace had to come on this morning.

We were gone a couple of days for MEA, and got home yesterday evening to a house that was 65 - the lack of activity and cooking make a big difference I guess!  That led to a house that was 61 this morning, and an edict that we turn on the heat.  Happy wife, happy life.

Non-furnace topic:

There is a funny theme from the SJU posters of "this team is average" or "this team is bad" or  "this is the worst team in the past 10 years", combined with "the stupid division format is screwing us out of the playoffs!"  Not sure how those statements co-exist.

Completely agree that there isn't a strong national contender in the MIAC this year, and it's creating a bit of a muddled situation...but isn't SJU being down more of the issue than the divisional format being a problem?  A strong SJU team, or any MIAC team that's capable of making a long run in the post-season doesn't barely beat Augsburg, and then lose to Gustavus - so isn't the divisional setup a moot point?

???

I was thinking the same thing, but was thoroughly enjoying the meltdowns.

Art, excellent use of Monkey StompTM.  I don't expect The Cru to crap the bed again.  I could see that game going either way, but if Trinity is back to full or near-full strength, I think they'll win.

I'm wondering if Trinity will have their All-American linebacker for the first half. It sounds like they were going to appeal the targeting ejection to the NCAA.

Targeting should not penalized with an ejection in D3 or any level that does not have replay. Assess a 15 yard penalty and have the player sit out for 5 plays. If he gets another personal foul penalty in the game then eject him.
Also there's enough video at D3 games that there could be a review process.
After the player was ejected at SJU on Saturday there was a video replay on the video board and it showed clearly that it was not targeting.

100% agree. Don't take away the penalty, but take away the ejection. That is how it is officiated at the high school level in MN. Officials are told when in doubt, throw the flag, and it works because there is no ejection. This really shouldn't be all that difficult to change.

Have to reconcile with the prospect of another.500ish season for the Cobbers. As boring as their old offense was for so many years, they could at least execute it with the right QB. With the latest incarnation of the spread offense, the woes of no run game and throws to receivers' ankles continue from last year. The offensive line struggled all day, especially on the left side. When there was a hole to run, runners chose to hit the pile instead of the hole. Huge penalties. Defense looked more promising, but had some clearly blown coverages at times. Nice to see some fight to tie it up late, but then could not prevent the Blugolds from getting back into FG range for the winner. Tough loss to a team accustomed to losing.

Was told by some locals at the outset that the UWEC marching band would be the highlight, and that many home fans would leave after halftime. This proved to be true.

The conversion to the passing oriented spread (or at least away from the unique double wing) for the Cobs has been difficult, but probably needed to attract star athletes on offense. Personally, I wish they would have done it at least a decade ago if not more, but that's just my personal preference. I feel the loss of winning tradition will be difficult to overcome.

I have no doubt you are right, Checker, with regard to recruiting advantage with the spread O. I actually do prefer it, but no ineffective offense is easy to watch. Going back to last season, they do put up some big passing numbers, but have a very hard time with the short game (passing) and have no running game whatsoever. Maybe it was just opening jitters, a six hour bus ride, or face-melting heat, but it just didn't appear a year of experience offered any sign of sharpness. Maybe they just don't have the right personnel in place. While one Saturday does not a season make, I was hoping the Cobbs would show something indicative of a return to relevance in the conference.

Offensive line looked to be a big problem. I do think it was necessary to ditch the option, but the spread style they run is so vanilla its maddening. Defense has been good, but they are usually on the field most of the game with the no-huddle offense and the inability to sustain drives. Hopefully the new OC can add a few wrinkles, but if the first game was any indication, its going to be another 5-5 campaign or worse.

Cobbers just punted on 4th and 6 from the ham line 27 yard line. Anyone confirm or deny that this is some sort of record for closest to the end zone a team has punted?

...but I am a fan of the conference championships over national for football.  I think several in the MIAC are overly concerned about making sure 2 teams from the conference get in the playoff rather than just enjoying the MIAC.

And that is the difference between crappy teams that vote other teams out of conferences and teams with legit aspirations of making noise on the national scene.

Thank you!
