Looking around the league the other day, I took a peek at the Brockport Baseball Page..Looks like Justin Beach overhauled the entire staff...Dennstedt, Scott, and Debay all left off, just Beach and Ory Mee. ANy idea what happened to any of those guys?

Starvin,

That sounds real interesting, Kris is a very solid player and will def help the Red Dragons this year...my only question is where? With both Diminos coming back, Jason Simone, Kevin Jackson, Pezzuto and John Zilnicki all there, on top of any guys Coach Brown has coming in, that OF seems awfully crowded. Seems like he might be best suited for the mound at Cortland. Doesnt look like Kris is getting much time this summer in the NYCBL, not sure which team he is on, but his stats dont look like he is playing much. Too bad the Red Dragons didn't land a consistent playing SS or do they have anyone coming in to fil the void there?

Does anyone have any other news on any players coming into the SUNYAC?

Kudos to Dave Filak, looks like he is pitching very well this summer in the NYCBL.

Any early projections for the SUNYAC's? Sounds to me like the Red Dragons might just be reloading after a "down" year for them...

Hope the summer is going well for everyone, before we know it will be SUNYAC season

This is my guess at the All-SUNYAC team:

First Team:

2B   Josh Greco (Fredonia) (POY – third)
3B   Don Kirsch (Fredonia)
SS   Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh)
OF   Jordan Basile (Fredonia)
OF   Mike Avery (Cortland)
OF   Todd Allen (Brockport)
DH   Jason Simone (Cortland)
RHP   Steve Juedes (Oneonta) (Pitcher of the Year)
LHP   Matt Tone (Cortland)

Second/third Teams:
C   Rob Herrmann (Fredonia)
   Anderson Gardner (Cortland)
1B   Tyler Terlecki (New Paltz)

   Matt O’Leary (Plattsburgh)
LHP   Travis Ratliff (Cortland)
Ricky Carlson (Fredonia)

Just my opinion…

Bob,

Seems like you have everyone in the conference making these teams. I do agree on Juedes winning pitcher of the year. Seems like Player of the year might be open. Jackson could win it, the young man has had a great year. I think Avery might also have a shot at winning as well, but we will see.

I thnk coach of year has to go to Matt Palisin. I can't really say enough for what he has done with that program, building it from nothing to the point where they had a legitimate shot to host coming into the last weekend.

Cstate,

I see you have changed your tune on expierenced pitching...

This is always an interesting time for coaches, many of these teams that make the tournmanet have at least 2 legitimate starting pitchers. Do the coaches throw there 1 and 2 out there to try and get into the finals in the winners bracket or do they take a shot with a lesser guy and try and steal the first one and line themselves up with there 1 and 2 to win the semi's and the finals?

Who would be the top 3 guys for each team...This is what I think.

Plattsburgh
-O'Leary
-Kelley
-Campbell

Cortland
-Tone
-Ratliff
-Blanco

Brockport
-Shannon
-Gentzke
-Locke

Fredonia
-Carlson
-Hausler
-Saeva

Anyone have any other ideas about the pitching matchups of the weekend?

looks like Ithaca may have been shafted with these rankings...still won't matter they are going to get their bid anyway

Sorry board its been awhile since I've been on...My daughter just gave birth to our 3rd grandchild!!!!

I have been doing my best to keep my eye on whats going on around the SUNYAC as well as the rest of the region. Was a little suprised by the first regional rankings yesterday, thought for sure Ithaca would be ahead of Cortland, and looking just at the regional records, I would have thought Fredonia would be ahead of Cortland too. I guess the name Cortland goes a lot longer than you would think (deservedly so).

In response to Rudy and Bob's latest post...

I would have to say that getting a team to live up to expectations and play at a consitent level falls all on the shoulders of the coaching staff. Bob, you are correct in saying that coaches don't make plays and they don't get at bats, but when it comes to playing up to your potential, that falls squarely on the shoulders of the coaches. Teams do often "play down" to there competition and are able to walk away with a "W" based solely on their talent. Other times they may play up to their competion (i.e. a rivalry game, senior day, homecoming, etc.).

Taking this arguement and extending it to the conference...

Oneonta- Now i'm on record as saying this was Coach Ferchen's best chance to take the SUNYAC tournament. I am also on record as saying this might be the biggest let down for his program if they didnt. So now what would you call the fact that without a ton of help this weekend, they aren't even going to be going to the tournament. Who do you blame this on? From the looks of it it could go 50/50. The plattsburgh series his team couldnt' scrap up one run in the first game and then his starter in the 2nd game couldnt find the zone. But how in the world do you score 40 runs in doubleheader and come away with a split? Or how about Ferchen splitting his 1 and 2 on that same weekend? Why would he not thrown Filak against Oswego and take what would seem to be an easy and obvious win? Of course looking back now, had they swept Plattsburh and Filak did beat Cortland, Ferchen would look like a genius. Nonetheless, Ferchen and his staff need to field some of the blame for this team underachieving in conference play.

Brockport- I would have to agree with Rudy on this one. Seems to me like when this team is up they are up, but when they are down they are really down. This team seems to look real good every staurday, when they have Shannon on the mound for them. There midweek play as well as theri play on Sunday has been terrible. If this team is as good as they should be (going on what has been said on this board) who do you blame for their inability to get more than one game above .500 for the season?

When a team can show up and look like the '74 Oakland A's one day (I guess a modern day equivalent would be the '96 Yankees) and the then look like the Bad News Bears the next (the one's with Walter Matheau, haha) who is to blame for that? In my opinion it is the coaching staff. Part of being a coach is motivation, you need to be able to motivate those who can motivate themselves. You need to make sure your team plays on an even field at all times. Make sure your teams keeps the same approach at the plate no matter if they are facing the top level of competition or the bottom of the barrel. I realize that we are dealing with 18, 19, 20 year old kids who have school, girlfriends and socail lives to deal with, but I do not think that this shoul be accounting for rollercoaster play.

My intentions are not to pick on anyone or to single anyone out, but better yet just to share my opinion, I'm sure planty of people will not agree with it, but that is their right and I understand.

Going to try and make it out to the Oneonta and New Paltz game this week, if i do I will be sure to let you know what I see....

Enjoy the nice weather board members!!

alot has been made on the board about Joe Brown and his coaching ability. What about the rest of the conference? What are the coaching capabilites of Palisin, Doorey, Paino, Griffiths, Beach and Ferchen?

Ruby,

Seems to me like there aren't very many top level coaches in the conference. Just looking at them on an individual basis, know one has done much to make themselves standout.

Palisin--His program has come on as of late. They used to be considered the door mat of the conference, and you could usually ink them in as two conference wins on your schedule. Palisin who I believe is a pitcher by trade, has improved his team through that portion of the game. There ERA has gotten better each year over the past couple years (2007 and 08 ERA in the 6's, while this year they are in the low 3's). While also there D seems to be improving % in the low .900's to .965 now.

Doorey--Took over a fairly new program when he got there and has made some strides. But as stated earlier, he can make it to the dance, but can't seem to get any wins in there. He has had some pitching issues as far as depth. He has had some very talented ballplayers there over the years. Hoffman, Welch, Dahlin, Hughes and Kutolowski. Not to mention the fact that he has the luxury of recruitng to probably one of the nicest D3 facilities in the NE. He should be able to be bringing in much more talent. Doorey's teams are ones that will traditionally hit very well, but have trouble when its time to toe the slab.

Paino--Although I don't know much about him, I can only look at there statistics and there records. They really don't play as many games as most of the other teams. As far as I can tell they do not traditionally take a Spring trip (i see they did this year). It was an unfortunate thing that happend to him last spring, but it seems to me like his team was better off without him there. I am glad to see that he has made what seems to be a full rcovery. Again, like wiht most teams, pitching and defense seems to be there issue.

Beach--On paper his team is probably one of the most talented teams in the conference. Some very promising players, with loads of potential, who really have not panned out. Underachieving does not even begin to describe this team. ERA for most of the year in 6's and 7's and a very poor fielding average. Did a decent job with a young team last year, but has taken when seems to be steps backwards with this team.

Griffiths--Since he has taken over the helm, his team has been on a rollercoaster of a ride. Last years team was much improved and from the stats, looked like they had a true #1 in Zack Potter. This years team just seems to be struggling all over the place. An ERA in the 8's is not gonna win you many ball games, just ask the Brockport players. FRom what I undersstand this is a very difficult schol for academics, so perhaps that might be giving Coach Griffiths some problems when it comes to recruiting. I mean it beomes very easy to coach and to pile up victories when your team can roll the balls out and win on sheer talent alone, but what about when you have to develop players.

Ferchen--To me, Ferchen and Oneonta seem to be the biggest enigma of the SUNYAC over the past few years. Ferchen alwasy seems to have some great talent, but they just can't put anything together. A team that had 2 pitchers talented enough to play professional baseball and they couldn't win the tournament. This year seems like there best year and chance to take the SUNYAC tournament, anything less would be considered letdown IMO

Anyone have any additional insight on any of these coaches?

Times like these is when the true ability of a coach is shown and I think that's why you're seeing Cortland struggle.  Not that it's any one person's fault but from what I know of the program Brown gets all the credit and should be equally willing to take responsibility.  Any coach can study the game and win with good players but not every coach has that "IT" factor going on or a presence about them.  The guy is too much of a rollercoaster when I watch their games, FAIRWEATHER would describe it best.  IMO, the best coaches show their true ability when things aren't going well or a program faces a setback.  When you have injuries or a lack of talent, you find ways to get the most out of your players mentally, emotionally and of course physically.  Brown chooses to place blame on his players more often than not it seems.  It's ok to do that when necessary but if you do it all the time, your players aren't going to want to run through a wall for you.  That working relationship is what allows a coach to get the most out of the talent he has to work with IMO.  Year by year teams are different and a coach needs to figure out his team's identity and by this time of year have things figured out.  A guy like Valesente is a prime example.  The guy lost a ton of talent but gets the most out of his players year in and year out through his coaching style/strategies.

You would think Brown a disciple of the Coach V school of basebal would have learned some of this...

I'm not to sure about this, but I do remember hearing a few comments at a couple alumni festivities that Coach Val and Coach Brown do not exactly see eye to eye. Does anyone else have any information on that?

I can't seem to understand the idea of saving pitchers for certain teams. I guess I am a little old school and come from the mentality that when "your horse" is ready you take him out of the barn and let him run. You can't play for the next day, you have play for today. I appluade Coach Ferchen for going with one of his top guys when he was ready and not holding him for the weekend. You really never know what is going to happen so IMO saving and holding guys is not such a smart idea.

As we have seen in the past, Coach V's inability to use his pitching "correctly" has hurt his teams in post-season play (guess he got lucky twice in the 80's).

Its suprising that with Ithaca having a JV team, they are not able to develop more arms to use. Isn't developing players the purpose of having a JV team?

It's great to see Ithaca doing well. I was worried that we lost to much last year, but Coach V did a great job filling in the gaps. Great pitching by MacDaniel and Sapp. Hopefully they can continue there winning ways and make some noise in the Regionals

Sergi,
How can you honestly think Brockport has a chance to host? I'm aware that mathematically any thing is possible with them, but they seem to be the MOST inconsistent team in the conference. I think it is time for the board and SUNYAC fans to that getting to regionals is going to mean running straight through one of the Red Dragons.

Just looking at pitching matchups, you have to like the starting pitching of Oneonta and Cortland over any other team. When it comes to tourney time, you are going to need your 4th, 5th and 6th pitchers to come through. Both Oneonta and Cortland are the only two teams that could realistically get anything out of those pitchers.

I think Fredonia might be good enough with there number one to get a first round win in the SUNYAC tournament, but that is it at the very best. How you can like Plattsburgh throwing O'Leary untested underclassmen.

I keep reading about how most people feel that this year might be very competitive in the SUNYAC tournament, but I happen to think otherwise, IF teams like Brockport, Plattsburgh and Fredonia are some how able to make it to the tournament and then to the third day, there is IMO a zero percent chance they will be able to compete with either Oneonta and Cortland on the mound. If that's the case they are going to just out hit them and with those two teams having extra pitching, I just don't see it happening.

Although Cortland maybe having a down year, they have several pitchers on there staff that have tournament, regional and World Series experience to there name. Say what you want but, that will go an extremely long way comes tournament time.

I am by no means a Cortland supporter (Ithaca grad '82), but I do consider myself to be a knowledgeable baseball man, who can separate facts from fiction. When it comes to tournament play, you can never underestimate the value of expierence.
