Three disappointing missing names from the Wheaton roster: Micah Schnyders, Jacob Schauer and Cole Reid

The loss of Schnyders will hurt the most, but it appears that he was able to get back to D1 with a spot on the Eastern Michigan roster.

In what looks like it will be a rebuilding season, Jacob Schauer probably would have been rewarded with a decent amount of playing time for his years spent as a program player. It's a shame that he didn't participate in the Senior Night festivities, but he certainly has plenty of other opportunities to hear compliments from Mike Schauer and I have it on good authority that the highly accomplished young Schauer was offered a dream job.

Cole Reid's minutes decreased a little throughout last season, but he was viewed as a potential future all-conference big man. His absence is concerning because of the makeup of the rest of the roster. I don't know what kind of scheme Wheaton is going to run this season but the roster has only two non-guards listed. Connor Braun is a solid 6' 9" starter, but the only other player listed as a forward has a collegiate stat line of 1 shot attempted and 1 foul in 1 minute over 2 years.  If I'm an opposing coach, I'm going to run the first three or four possessions through Braun to put him on the bench with foul trouble, and then watch my forwards back down all of the 6' Wheaton guards and score a lot of buckets in the paint.  The Thunder better have personnel that can rain threes from everywhere if they're going to counterbalance their size deficit.

Wheaton had been fortunate to have a lot of experience on their squad in recent years, going back to their Final Four appearance, and even before. But this year, there's not much experience, at all.

Losing Schnyders does hurt, but he never seemed to live up to his billing last year. Didn't seem to find his groove at Wheaton.

And Jacob Schauer is making a great decision to move on to the next chapter in his life. While he would've seen some playing time this year, his efforts are better spent pursuing a career,

Cole Reid is an enigma, as he never even suited up after mid-December. My suspicion is that he ran into some academic difficulties that kept him off the court. Too bad, because he had great size and a nice touch, from what we saw from his limited play last season. The search for the next Nate Frank continues at Wheaton.

In terms of what a starting 5 looks like for Wheaton, my guess would be Schiavello, Sock, Braun, and maybe RJ Veiliz — the grad transfer from Western Oregon, along with ????.

The most experience outside of the names above are Daniel Garza, who is coming back for another season of eligibility, and Billy Durkin. Outside of that, I don't think any other player on the team has logged more than 20 minutes of playing time in a Wheaton uniform in their entire careers.

They also added Noah Hedrick, who transferred in from Hope, where he came off the bench.

Freshmen recruits include Ty Ferguson from Columbus, IN; Soren Richardson from Northfield, MN; and Eli Will from Ashburn, VA.

News from Wheaton coming soon. Stay tuned.

Mike Schauer is telling everybody he meets in Fort Wayne that he's not stepping away from his coaching duties at Wheaton. Consider the rumor quashed.

It wouldn't make sense for Mike to step down as coach right now. His son Jacob is coming back to play a fifth year, so we should expect that Mike will coach through next season.

But between now and the end of next season, we shouldn't be surprised if Mike announces he's stepping down to take the AD job. I have no inside information other than that Mike would be a great fit for the AD role, and there are a number of names that Wheaton could consider to take over the basketball program, several that have already been cited here.

I'd imagine that Mike could coach at Wheaton as long as he wants, given the success he's had and how much he's respected within the institution. It's a matter of how much longer he wants to coach versus other ambitions he may have at Wheaton or elsewhere.

Wheaton is hiring a new AD. (https://recruitingbypaycor.com/career/JobIntroduction.action?clientId=8a78858b5ea24795015ea61343603556&id=8a7887ac7fa619dc017fb7822d3776d6&source=&lang=en)

Sounds like Julie Davis, who has held the position since 2011, is moving into another role within the college.

There may be implications for the men's basketball program. Too soon to say, though.

There may be another head coach job opening in the CCIW this off-season. Hearing rumblings about another move in the conference. Nothing substantiated yet, but stay tuned.

So now that the season is officially finished, it's time to look at next year.  Are there any players listed as seniors returning for their "Covid" year?  If not, the 3 tournament teams seem to be losing a lot.

IWU - Leritz, Noe, Lambesis

Elmhurst - Rhode, Thomas, Genco, Militello

Wheaton - Alioth, Adom, Cruickshank, Anthony, Uvegas

----

NCC - Matt Helwig, Meredith

Tyson Cruickshank is expected back for the Thunder for the 2022-23 season. The other 4 have finished their collegiate careers.

Hope 69
Wheaton 71

What an unbelievable game and why you love this time of the year.

Fantastic game played by Hope.  Both Thomas and Dykhouse were unstoppable driving the lane and getting the entire Wheaton squad in foul trouble.  They will return next year and be a ton for any Dutch opponent to handle.

It was an Adom and Cruickshank show again.  Adom had a terrific first half and good overall.  Cruickshank had another tough shooting night from outside.  But he made up for it by breaking down the defense and driving the lane aggressively.  Alioth had a tougher night scoring but grabbed a ton of boards again.

Survive and advance.

Credit to Tyson for putting the team on his back down the stretch when points were hard to come by. He attacked the basket and manufactured points. And then Adom and Alioth both came up big in the clutch hitting free throws.

A tremendous effort by Wheaton's stars that was needed against a tough Hope team.

The oddities of the CCIW schedule (and mine) thus far have allowed me to watch all or part of every Wheaton game except one. I've been impressed by what I've seen. And I've observed a couple of things in particular.

One is that Cade Alioth, who was previously nothing more than a cipher for the Sonic Atmospheric Disturbance, has emerged as a legit CCIW big man. He's starting to give off a Nate Haynes vibe. That opens up a world of possibilities for Wheaton, because it means that Anajuwon Spencer is finally liberated to be the stretch-four that he was born to be. The better Alioth does underneath the basket, the more dangerous Spencer becomes, because defenses will have to play Alioth honestly and Spencer won't need to be tied down in the paint for an entire offensive sequence.

The second thing is that Nyameye Adom and Tyson Cruickshank have emerged as one of the Central Region's better backcourts. Whether it's because they're both now out from underneath the shadow of Aston Francis or because they've upped their games from last year to this year -- I think it's a combination of both -- they've both become very versatile and prolific scorers at one end of the floor and very tough defenders at the other end. It's hard to argue against last season's results, since after all Francis did lead them to the promised land (I love the idea that Fort Wayne, IN, of all places, can be metaphorically described as "the promised land" ;)). But there's a lot to be said for sharing the load, and having two regular and effective backcourt scorers means that opposing defenses need to account for more than one vector in terms of Wheaton's shot-taking; while Luke Anthony was a highly effective shooter in his own right last season, the remarkable thing about Wheaton's 2018-19 shot distribution was that Francis took more FG attempts than Anthony, Spencer, Adom, and Luke Peters combined. Mike Schauer is going to have a nice problem to solve when Wheaton's football season comes to an end and Anthony wears basketball livery again, because right now the Wheaton backcourt is doing just fine without him.

I still don't think that Wheaton is a Top 25 team yet, but it's not that far off. It's a team that could definitely be building towards something big.

I've been able to watch all of Wheaton's games thus far, including 3 in-person, and I'll echo a lot of what Greg has already noted.

Alioth has the potential to be a difference maker for Wheaton, especially as he gets comfortable being on the floor for long stretches. He's found himself in foul trouble on occasion, which has limited how effective he could be. But if he's able to find his groove, it opens up the floor for Wheaton.

It's also pleasantly surprising to see how well Adom and Cruickshank have stepped into their roles. Adom showed flashes of his ability last year but was limited because of Francis' game. Cruickshank was talked about by people around the program as having huge potential last year but played very limited minutes. He's coming into his own this year. His defensive game needs some improvement, but he's already proven that he can score.

It will be interesting to see what a starting five of Cruickshank, Adom, Luke Anthony, Alioth, and Jay Spencer is capable of doing. A lot of people, including Mike Schauer, were concerned about finding enough scoring on this team to be competitive, which is understandable with Francis' departure. But Wheaton has shown that it's more than capable of finding the scoring it's needed so far this season.

Keep an eye on freshman Eli Considine. He's going to make an impact this year. Another freshman to watch is Andrew Williams, whose energy and non-stop hustle has earned him some early season playing time.

I think Wheaton will exceed expectations this year. Where that lands them is yet to be seen, but there's more to this team than most people expected.

Wheaton has begun practices.

Roster is up -- https://athletics.wheaton.edu/sports/mens-basketball/roster

They graduated 6 seniors last year, and it looks like 2 other players didn't return from last year's team. They've added 10 freshman. With Spencer Peterson done, the only other senior on the team is Jay Spencer.

Wildly speculated starting line-up:

G - Tyson Cruickshank
G- Nyameye Adom
F - Cade Alioth (eventually Luke Anthony, once football ends)
F - Gavin Hawkins
C - Jay Spencer

It'll be interesting to see how Mike Schauer re-tools. Not a lot of experience on this team, outside of Spencer. I'll be curious to see if any of the freshman will contribute early.

A surreal and unfortunate ending to the NCC vs. Wheaton game. The injury to Aiden Chang was the worst I've ever seen in person. I was sitting behind the scorer's table and had a disturbingly clear view of the injury. The entire gym seemed to be rattled by what happened. It was silent for a long time while the training staff and medical personnel worked on him, waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Chang was in excruciating pain. Fortunately his parents were at his side as he was being worked on.

Players on both teams were visibly shaken by the injury. Several NCC players were in tears.

Credit to the athletic department at Wheaton and both coaching staffs for doing their best to take care of Chang. It seemed like it took forever for the ambulance to arrive. Players on both sides showed great sportsmanship and character tonight.

Very rough way to end a highly competitive game.

Thoughts and prayers for Aiden Chang and his family tonight. That's a terrible way to end your career. Hoping for a speedy and full recovery.
