I saw said WW player play 6 times in person i think over the last 4 years.  I always admired her style of play.  In a game where the most agressive person usually wins she was definitely that.  A lot of players lacked that extra drive and she always impressed me by having that edge that helped her produce when the game was on the line.

That being said, there's a fine line between being agressive and wreckless.  It doesn't surprise me at all that she could cross that line.

The win over WW is a great one for UWL.  I am surprised that UWL dominated the boards like they did.  Looks like Burg had another great game vs. the Eagles.  She has been a tough player to match up with for UWL.  Very impressed with Robinson this year.  She seems to be doing a great job in the post for a team that lost two great players underneath in Churchill and Frank.

Again, this UWL team should be able to finish in the top 6.  Not sure how anyone would have picked them to finish last ???

PRF2009A, you are correct about last season.  They did over-achieve when they went to the Tournament.  However I still stand by my comments that they are in general the most over-rated program in the WIAC.  Hoop junkie brings up a really good point that there are schools with a lot less resources than LAX has, yet they are more successful.

No arguments here that they have not been successful overall, just pointing out that your initial comment and how you worded it was pretty much entirely incorrect.

What resources do you need to be successful in D3 Women's Basketball?  I would argue that out of all collegiate sports it requires the some of the least amount of resources.  If your comment was regarding the UWL football program I would completely agree that they should be able to do much more with all the factors that Hoop Junkie mentioned.

In my opinion the biggest factor for success at this level is a good coach.  If they can recruit, generate some buzz, be embraced by the community, and be a factor on gameday the only resources needed are a ball and a court.  Look at Stout and Point.  They aren't successful because they have access to vast resources, it's because they have great coaches that have built great programs.

Here are the official predictions from the SID's, seems to me like they have LAX pretty high for a team losing all 5 starters:

2011-12 Preseason Predictions--Voted on by WIAC Sports Information Directors

  2010-11 Record
1.  UW-Stevens Point (6) 27-3 overall, 16-0 WIAC
2.  UW-Whitewater (2) 21-7, 12-4
3.  UW-River Falls (1) 16-11, 7-9
4.  UW-Eau Claire 15-11, 9-7
5.  UW-La Crosse 20-8, 12-4
6.  UW-Stout 10-15, 5-11
7.  UW-Oshkosh 12-14, 7-9
8.  UW-Superior 8-17, 2-14
9.  UW-Platteville 6-19, 2-14
(  )--First-Place Votes

Isn't LAX always overrated in the preseason polls?  Most overrated team in the WIAC year in and year out.  Never a contender, even when they should be.UWSP is going to go 16-0 again.  And another deep run into the NCAA Tournament.
Good to see UW Sup isn't picked last.  Hopefully they keep improving.  They've got a good coach up there.

I hope this is a joke.  I'm going to reach wayyyy back to 2010-2011 when they were picked to finish 5th in the preseason and ended the season in a tie for 2nd and received a bid to the NCAA tourney.

That being said, 5th might be a little high for this team, but I don't see any strong cases for the teams ranked 6th or lower making huge improvements outside of Stout who you would just assume would be better this year with their history.  Without looking at it too much I think it's the top 3 and then all the rest this year.

1   UW Stevens Point
2   UW Whitewater
3   UW River Falls
4   UW Stout
5   UW Eau Claire
6   UW La Crosse
7   UW Platteville
8   UW Superior
9   UW Oshkosh

I'm going with this for now.  I don't see Point or WW being moved too far.  Also, I see Stout getting back on track after an off year.

UWL loses 5 starters which is of course a lot to overcome.  They do however have a transfer from UW-Milwaukee who practiced with the team during the 2nd semester, but was ineligible to play until next year for some reason.  Apparently she is a very solid player.  Has a similar game to Churchill.

Combine her with Robinson, Salata, and Radowitz (sp?).  Throw in a recruit or two that can play some quality minutes and this team should be respectible in the WIAC.

Point loses, 71-63.  Point finishes with 3 loses on the year, all at home.

Gosh darn it - the Titans wanted to give you the 2nd and 3rd losses, so you could also be 0-3 against the CCIW! :o :D  Curse you, George Fox! ;D

We'll try our best (for the Central region) to avenge your loss. ;)

Classy post.

UWL down 13-11 with 10 min left in 1st half.  Sloppy start for UWL.

It would not be the craziest thing in the world if Point lost to Concordia, but as billys said I'm not hesitating too much making that pick.  There are not too many cases that I would pick a MIAC squad to beat a WIAC squad.  After watching a lot of both conferences the last 4 years there's no comparison.

I'm sure Mount has a solid squad.  I'll take my chances with Whitewater.  Thomas Moore cannot be too thrillled about possibly seeing WW in the 2nd round.

Now on to UWL.  UWL can and should win their first game.  They will have  to come out a focused group and limit mistakes to make that happen though.

IWU would be a tough matchup for UWL, but an assumption without seeing them play this year is that they play the same style of ball as Point and WW.  If this is the case, UWL will have a fighting chance with their solid post play with Frank, Churchill, & Robinson combined with some timely 3-point shooting.  This is of course if they can limit turnovers which they haven't shown me they can do yet.

UWL is in and plays Wis. Lutheran @ IWU.  Other team is Webster

Any draw is a good draw for the Eagles.  Just needed to get in.

Now let's see if they can string a run together.

Well Stevens Point is a lock.

It would be a huge mistake not putting Whitewater in.  21-6 record overall, not sure of in-region, but really good wins vs. Calvin, George Fox and Illinois Wesleyan.

I don't think La Crosse gets in. Two good wins vs. Whitewater and Chicago.  Other than that nothing really good.  Losses against other NCAA teams in SP (0-2), Coe, Chapman (most likely a tournament team).

La Crosse knew this was their year, they should have scheduled a better schedule.  Luther, Ripon, Edgewood, and Viterbo doesn't really help a team this time of year.

I have to completely disagree with the comment regarding UWL's schedule.  8 of their 27 games were vs. likely tournament teams.  That's about 30%.  Without looking at all I can't imagine that there are 15 teams in the nation that could match/beat that stat.  (2 of them would be Point & WW I would imagine)

A win or two more vs. that competition is where UWL came up short.  Specifically looking back the game at Point, Coe, and Chapman were the ones they let get away.

I would love to see UWL make the tourney as I think they could play with the best aftter getting beat around in the WIAC all year and giving out their share of beatings too.

Regardless of whether they get in the tourney or not, this UWL team has nothing to be dissapointed about.  They were an extremely talented group and a lot of fun to watch/follow this year.

FWIW I have to disagree about Thompson.  She should shoot more free throws than she does.  With the exception of free throws her entire game is played within six feet of the basket.  The idea that she "looks like she is getting fouled when she isn't" is absurd.  The stats back up the fact she gets to the line a lot they do not however back up that she's not getting fouled.  She gets the call because she's getting fouled and doesn't get the refs to give her the call anywhere near as often as they could.

FWIW I think you are way off base on this one.  I don't think it's a bad thing that Thompson once in a while flops to get a call. Players that are as smart & aggressive as she is know how to draw contact and will attack the same way repeatedly because they know the odds of getting the defender to commit a foul are great.  Once in a while a defender will back off and she won't get the contact she was expecting hence creating a situation where she goes up flailing.

Again, not saying there's anything wrong with this practice, but to say it doesn't happen at least 1 out of 10 drives to the basket just doesn't add up.

To the game last night.  I thought Chantel Burg would be the difference and the stats seem to show that was part of the case.  She has killed the Eagles during her career and is an extremely tough player to defend.  WW has a great combination with her and Thompson.

Oshkosh makes five more baskets than LaCrosse and makes as many three point shots at the Eagles.  But LaCrosse shoots 30 free throws making 24 and Oshkosh goes 6 of 9 from the line.  Churchill alone makes more free throws than the Titans attempted and the Eagles had made more free throws in the first half than the Titans shot for the game.  The foul count was 25 to 11.

The Eagles had a very simple game plan last night.  Pound the ball inside.  Whether it was Frank, Churchill, Robinson, or even Litrenta driving the message was simple.  Oshkosh was overmatched inside and UWL wanted to take advantage of that.

That being said they did a great job of that, but the game still ended up being a little closer than i think Heeren was hoping for.  Transition defense was a weak link last night for UWL as most of Oshkosh's points came during the fast break.  With how quick their guards were I was surprised they didn't push it even more to take advantage of UWL being slow getting back on defense.

Looking forward to the matchup tomorrow night.  Eagles will need to frustrate WW with tough defense early and often if they are going to have a shot at this one.  24 for 30 from the line again would help their chances too.

If you would have told me this group of seniors for CSB would be in this situation 2 years ago I would have thought you were crazy.

I hope they can salvage this season and make a run in the MIAC playoffs.  They have the talent to do it, that's for sure.

I would say at this point UWSP is a slam dunk, and I hope UWRF is.

You and me both...  :-\

My goal since I took over the pbp duties was to call an NCAA Tourney game (the first in UWRF history) and seeing as how this is my last chance I would very much appreciate it.  :)

I just had a flashback to watching Melzer get a technical when up by 7 with a minute left against Platteville.  Hopefully this year's team has a better end to the season than that.
