Catholic was 4-6 in 1992 and was 5-5 the year before that so I can't imagine who would have nationally ranked them.

Catholic came into the 1995 season nationally ranked by SI, I believe.

How bad was Catholic in 1992? They lost to Swarthmore.

So that team went 4-6 and graduated a ton of guys, there were a lot of seniors on that team. I followed the team very closely as the student radio guy (dating me, I know). The next year, with a bunch of unproven guys, I wrote a preview for the student newspaper that said the team was going to struggle. Well, the head coach wasn't very fond of my take and called me and proceeded to rip me a new one for about 20 minutes the day the paper came out.

However, that team went 1-9, only beating Gallaudet, and the team finished the season with 30-some players and the coach was fired. His next call to me was him telling me that he'd been fired. The athletic director was trying to hold the news in because the following day was the last newspaper edition of the fall semester, but I got the story because the coach told me on the record he was canned. :)

Anyway -- good times, but no way that 1992 team was legitimately ranked. Gotta love the D-III dark ages. Probably Dan & Peggy Shonka's preview or Don Hansen.

Yes...it was '95....we won at Catholic to move to 6-0. They were 4-1 going in I think.  But I do recall them being ranked by SI as you stated...now I'm trying to think who we beat in 92 opener...?

Yeah, Fisher won like 4 games in the 1990's.  Everybody got their licks in that decade, up until 2002.

SJFF went 21-17 from 92-95

....with an asterisk....the 7-3 '95 campaign was wiped out 1 yr later due to an NCAA eligibilty violation

We beat nationally ranked Catholic in 92 and Nationally ranked RPI in 93

Had a nationally ranked defense in '93 and '94

It was the next 4-5 yrs that we won "4 games"....literally

MHB picks up a first place vote

Don't recall seeing 3 teams with first place votes at same time??

Too lazy to check....

Ithaca should request permission to play in LL

Ironically, I just logged on and out of curiosity I checked my profile to see my last posts....from last Fall...

I was 'wondering' why Collichio had gone out to Mount Union, etc...

He had just scored game winning TD for MUC in Final Four game I think...

Now, he comes 'home' scores for Fisher???

Welcome back to where you belong Colicchio   ;)

Respectfully, let's stop overvaluing the football tradition of some of these Upstate NY schools.

Ithaca has one NCAA playoff win in the last 10 seasons.
Cortland has five NCAA playoff wins in their entire history. They've advanced past the second round twice.

Alfred has qualified for the NCAA's three times and won two NCAA playoff games.

Fisher's got the best mix of recent, sustained success. Several trips into the quarters, one into the semis.

They're good programs, but if we're just talking football, I mean, it's a non-starter. Mount's probably lost 10 games since this kid was born.

All the other stuff is really speculative. Maybe he couldn't afford Hobart/IC. Maybe he realized that Mount Union offered him a better education than Cortland State (shocker) as well as the chance to not have to live in Cortland. Maybe he's just not into ceramics (kidding Pep).

;D

I don't have anything to add concerning how he got to Alliance, but I find it interesting that your discussing a back-up sophomore receiver that had ZERO catches in his Mount career prior to 2 weeks ago when the sophomore starter got hurt.    When he came into the game, we had no idea who it was.    Not to say he hasn't played well, especially his blocking,  but he isn't a difference maker.   Yet.

ha...this is my point in a way.  Why does a kid leave suburban Rochester with many college options and college options with very adequate football programs if as HSCoach says....he's a nobody that nobody knew about?  He was quite a talent at Webster though...

Yeah, I certainly get the Nat'l Championship 'thing', but why do 99% (I  made this stat up...) of the rest of the NY recruits stay 'home'?

So this 1 kid decided Alliance was where it is at?  Ok...that could simply be the case.

Yes, it was Isaac Collins of Geneva, NY (Hobart's backyard)

I guess shame on all the upstate teams for not getting this kid.

A quick search shows that Alliance is 5 hours from Geneva, so maybe Upstate NY is still fair game for Mt. Union recruiting.

This may be just personal preference, but I think going to college outside your own backyard is very attractive from a teenager's perspective.  That can range from going a few hours away to traveling across the country; I am from the Philadelphia area and went to college in Pittsburgh, about 4 hours' driving time from my house to CMU, and thought it was perfect.  I was (and still am) close enough to get home with a day's notice and an afternoon drive, but far enough away that I had to grow up, learn a new city and region, and forge some of my own identity.

Different strokes for different folks/kids, but I understand why not everyone goes to college in their own backyard, and think 200-300 miles' distance from home is just about the perfect amount of "space" for a kid to grow up while also being within arm's reach (and driving distance for games - my parents made it to 21 of the 23 games during my junior & senior year without it seeming an unreasonable burden).  So I think the OAC schools reaching into NY for recruiting makes perfect sense; at CMU we also had a fair representation of New Yorkers.

Yes but this is where it gets interesting.  Hobart is a nationally ranked Liberal Arts schools with (lets estimate here), 90% of its student body from within a 5 hour drive.  Kids go to Hobart for all sorts of reasons.  Will Mt. Union show the same statistics?  What do the FA packages show?

You are also assuming the kid could have gotten into Hobart. I have no idea about that kid, but is that a good assumption to make in general? Hobart is a different school than Mt U, and that isn't in any way besmirching Mt U.

My parents drew a 6 hour circle around our house and said pick a school in this area. W&L was 6hrs and 30 minutes and my parents bent the rule simply because it was such a good school. I applied and got in to College of NJ, Rutgers, and a bunch of closer schools, but I didn't want to stay that close to home.

Ok so this hypothetical recruit who cant get into Hobart or IC, but loves football, is talented, but not D1 talent....How bout Cortland?  He must be looking at Cortland and MT. Union?

At the risk of sounding 'bad' (like that has ever stopped me), why would a D3 football player to be, leave his 'backyard' (suburban Roch, NY) for Alliance OH?  In DI, you are recruiting with money/scholarships, plus the allure of big time college campus and football atmosphere....you are happy to leave your home for Happy Valley, Columbus, South Bend, etc...

Presumably, at this level though, a kid just wants to continue playing football and go to college.  If that is the case, why do you decide that the place to go grow up and 'get away from your parents' is Alliance OH when Cortland, Ithaca, St. John Fisher, Hobart and Alfred are all tradition rich (football, academics, facilities et al) possibilities that also offer the ability for a kid to get a little distance from home.

I certainly get that a Webster kid shuns Fisher because it is literally his back yard...but why not IC?  That is a couple hours away....and its Ithaca.  I mean I know Ithaca sucks, but it is Ithaca...

It has to be the Garcon/Shorts/NFL factor at this point...assuming this kid from Webster (Colicchio WR) has those aspirations perhaps?

...he even coulda gone to AU if he liked the color purple so much...

::)

In the past we have discussed recruiting...talent....where it comes from....where it goes and why, etc...

Well the winning Td for MUC was scored by a Rochester-Webster grad '12  ....

Didn't want to go to tradition rich IC?

What about facility rich and 4 time quarterfinalist SJF?

Hobart????

Nope....off to the Machine in Alliance

You think Shorts and Garcon to the NFL helped a high school WR with as aspirations from NY decide??   ;)

For my wife...SJFF losses are BIG because that means one step closer to me not zombie walking through another week of "re-living" my life and talking about traveling around the country to watch Fisher.... :(

thoughts?

I think we have a lot in common.

I think your list looks good. I love picking the 2002 Hobart game since that win is typically under appreciated since that was before Fisher (ready for this) 'arrived'.

The other win I would add is the 31-10 win over IC in 2006. That was the year after the Bill Struzi pick 6, and Fisher was still trying to shake off the "this is a nice run but won't last" stigma. I was at Growney and after Fisher scored 31 unanswered in the 2nd half, I left thinking...yeah, this team is for real.

I also don't really disagree with Saxon8 that one of Fisher's better wins, was a loss to UMU.

great call on the 2006 IC win...after I logged off earlier, I was wondering which 'obvious' game I missed and that the astute Fisher faithful would come up...

That was only other game that came to mind...

You are 100% correct about the 'come back' from 2005 and Struzzi Int (I was at that game with my wife...we made it a day trip/sightseeing) and it was a demorializing loss and the next year at home we were 4 or 5-0 at the time and I remember walking through parking lot and it was 10-0 before I even made it in and I was thinking, here we go...were not for real like all the PP posters have been saying....and then in second half our defense came storming out, and the place got loud and to this day, that second half was the most energized I ever felt as a plyer or fan at a home game.

My wife just asked if the Fisher win against John Carroll was the biggest win in school history (armature!). But it got me thinking...

What is their best win. It may be too soon to put this year into context, but I still think the win in 2006 against Springfield is their best win ever. Maybe the win against Rowan.

THoughts?

For my wife...SJFF losses are BIG because that means one step closer to me not zombie walking through another week of "re-living" my life and talking about traveling around the country to watch Fisher.... :(

But interesting, because I texted some buddies heading into the playoffs this year and challenged them to make a list of Fisher Top 5 wins in Vosburgh Era...

I never actually sat down and made the list but following games ran through my mind....keep in mind I am thinking a "Big" win factors in more than just the particular match-up, the final score or even the play-off implications...but more of a 'global' perpsective...

no particular order...

Win at Merrill in 2004 that clinched E8 and SJFF first ever trip to NCAA

"Hail Katherine" to Ferenbach in a game that we led by 2 scores in the fourth and blew the lead, in a season when that loss woulda/coulda changed the direction of program...it ended an 18 game losing streak to B-port (we had just beat IC...but program's REAL longtime nemesis at that time was B-Port...and a fact many may not know...Vosburgh's dad died the nite before game.

2004 OT 'win' against IC that catapulted SJFF into East Elite...was that a win???  ;)

Certainly the 31-0 drubbing of Rowan in 2006 to advance to Final Four

How bout 2002 17-14 win over 7-0 and Nationally ranked Hobart????  That was a monster win for this program...

JCU road NCAA win after trailing 13-0... (of course this win hadnt happened yet when I was contemplating my top 5...)

thoughts?
