Slow time of the basketball season, and so I was wondering who people had as their MVP about 8 games in to the season?

I think Ryan McPartland, Joe Scott, and Aaron Burtzel are the front runners with McP being the long-shot of the 3.

Funny you should post this, I was about to post the statistics about early MVP front-runners.  2 of your 3 players listed are at the top.....

Carl Hipp running away with the early vote.  Could it be the large influx of new Piper posters?

First off, Holland vs. Nicolai

It is really hard to compare them.  One plays on a winning team for a winning program.  The other plays for a losing team (at least in the first two years) in a rebuilding program.  Holland has to do so much more with less, while Nicolai can do less because he has so much more around him.  Holland has to force tough shots because if he doesn't score his teammates, minus WW, most likely won't. Nicolai can coast on cruise offensively and get after it on defense because if he's not open, he'll just dish it to someone who is.  Which is also why Nicolai's assist/turnover ratio is better, because his teammates hit shots.  Anybody have stats on head to head matchups? and total turnovers last year?

Secondly, Benching

No good coach benches a player because of one bad shooting game. If offense alone dictated basketball playing time, I would have played more.  But supposedly there are thing like "defense" and "rebounding."

Thirdly, PP's (Piper Posters)

Cool the jets.  This is a completely different team from last year that is mostly filled with players Nellie brought in.  This is his first real chance to show his offense with the players that best fit it, even though they are young.

If you want a way to check out how these guys compare, check out this site:

A buddy and I are hopefully going to provide advanced statistical analysis throughout the MIAC season.  In one of the posts, another poster's claim about Halverson being one of the best players is defended, as well as other interesting outcomes based off statistical output last year.  Hopefully this is interesting for some of you.  We will try to provide statistical analysis after every game once the conference season starts.

Drake - The Bethel roster is posted.  The SID is just trying to be a little tricky.  If you go to the BU men's basketball page and click on their roster you have to change the year in the top right hand corner.  The drop down menu reveals 2009-10.

A quick glance at the Royals roster and the biggest addition is obviously sophomore Taylor Hall, who transferred from Bemidji State.  Mr. Hall had a superb freshman year for BSU and I would expect big things from him this year.  He will be a tough match-up for the rest of the conference.

Other notable additions include former Andover High standout Scott Jesser, who I believe transferred to BU from Valley City, freshman forward Zak Mathson from Cambridge-Isanti who is a hard working, undersized power forward and last but certainly not least is 6-6 freshman Taylor Sparkman from Minnehaha Academy. I expect he will make an immediate impact as well.

...and to brighten your day my friend (Drake) I will make an early bold prediction (subject to change, of course) now that all of the rosters have been announced.  My first gut feeling of the final 6 who make the post-season in 2009-10 will be:

1. St. Thomas
2. Augsburg
3. St. John's
4. Bethel
5. Gustavus
6. Hamline

Fire away....

I've been close to the MIAC for the past few years and am now distanced so I'll be trying to keep up with the league through this board.  I've been checking for preseason predictions the last few days and hadn't found much.  Finally saw one today and thought I'd join in.

Based off what I know is returning last year, I would guess it looks this way:

1. UST
2. Augsburg
3. St. John's
4. Carleton
5. Gustavus
6. Hamline/Bethel
8. Concordia
9. St. Mary's
10. St. Olaf
11. Macalester

Anyone else?
