Quote from: Little Giant 89 on October 10, 2024, 07:56:02 AMThe Wabash v. Oberlin game which is taking place this coming Sunday will be the first Sunday game the Little Giants have played since 1960.

The game was moved from Saturday to Sunday in honor of the Yom Kippur holiday.

Correction after deeper research during the week:

The date originally listed for the 1960 Heidelberg game was incorrect in the files. After consulting newspaper accounts of Wabash football games dating back to 1914, no games have been found to have been played on Sunday, so this Sunday's game is likely the first to ever take place for a Wabash football team.

I remember that in 2007/08 a DePauw kicker made a 49/50 yarder as time ran out for the Tigers to avoid overtime when nobody there thought he could kick it that far.  (The game was played at DPU.)  If I recall correctly (please help if I am wrong), it was one of the few (or only) FGs he made that year.
Others can probably think of other examples over time.
You are certainly correct, though, in recognizing that in general D3 kickers do not have range much over 40 yards or so.
All that being said, I do think that D schools recruit kickers.
I'm also thinking that there are many examples of D3 kickers who have made shorter FGs to win a game late or at the horn.

That was indeed Jordan Havercamp's first career make.  A 47-yard walk off in the Monon Bell Classic is a heck of a time to get on the board.

I was in the opposite end zone going through the overtime rules with the HDNet sideline reporter (Natalie Allen) when Havercamp nailed that field goal. As he kicked it and saw it headed right down the middle, I told Natalie "Never mind. That kid just won the game."

As I recall, Havercamp transferred from Denison to DePauw. He was the back-up kicker for the Tigers, but starter Brendan Smith has missed a 25-yard kick and an extra point, so DePauw sent Havercamp out to try and kick the game-winner. He was the starter from that point forward.

The knock on D3 football has usually been there are few kickers in D3 capable of winning a game on long field goals. True or false? Anyone remember a kicker winning a game with time running out? I have seen more unsuccessful attempts than game winners. Does D3 not recruit for that position?

Spencer Whitehead - 41-yard field goal in the closing seconds to give Wabash a 13-10 win at Wittenberg on October 18, 2008. Wabash trailed 10-3 before scoring a TD with five minutes left to tie the score. Whitehead's kick with four seconds remaining gave the Little Giants the win on the way to an NCAC title.

I ran into Coach Nick at a golf course in Greencastle one summer. He was finishing his round and putting his clubs away in his car. I was getting my clubs out of the car. He came over and joked about how many people would be amazed that either one of us had a real life outside of the Monon Bell Game! We chatted for a bit more more and moved on. When I saw him after he "retired" (he was never too far away from DePauw football) at the Bell game we also had a nice chance to catch up for a few minutes.

Coach Nick  is a great example of everything that makes the Monon Bell Classic such an amazing rivalry!.

Jack made his last two attempts. He's now 93 away from tying the record set by.....  :)

The all-time NCAA record is 94 free throws made in a row by Paul Cluxton from Northern Kentucky University (DII). Davidson surpassed the DI mark of 85 owned by Darnell Archey from Butler University.

Davidson's actual streak is 67 consecutive free throws made. He finished the Wilmington game making 17-of-18 free throws, but he closed out the game making eight of his last eight attempts after going 1-2 from the line with 10:21 remaining in the game. The 67 (and counting heading into Wednesday's game at DePauw) would eclipse the NCAA Division III record.

The game notes are coming. Waiting on the All-Conference announcement Friday before I post them...  :)

All the credit goes to the students who work the events. They could be in the stands enjoying the game, but they made the choice to learn about working in sports and developing their talents. Without the students and the support of Wabash College (and the alumni!) those opportunities don't exist.

BASHDAD - I have those exact words from Lee in my office on a print I picked up while visiting his tomb at Washington and Lee University.

By the way, tell Andrew congratulations on the new job, but he's much too young to be having children...I still think of him and the rest of that group as just graduating from Wabash recently! I'm getting much too old.... :)

I would highly recommend both places HSCTiger mentioned. I've toured Appomattox Courthouse several times and will try to do so once again on this visit or next summer. I've been to Sailor's Creek Battlefield twice and love standing on the front porch of the house that overlooks the battlefield and imagine the troop movements as that portion of the Civil War drew to its conclusion.

If you are driving to Farmville from the Midwest, I would also recommend stopping in Bedford, VA to visit the D-Day Memorial. The entire Memorial is well done and quite moving. I had the chance to visit this summer a day before the anniversary celebration and spoke to families of vets from that campaign. Great experience.

Posted this today on the ODAC page --- wanted to make certain Wabash fans on the post board headed to the game are aware as well.

As someone who visits the Hampden-Sydney campus regularly for summer college (and to occasionally get a game of golf in with Jim Simms after summer college is completed), you do want to take a tour of the campus. Twice the size of Wabash with plenty of space and beautiful landscaping.

Just up the hill from Kirby Fieldhouse is the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest. The Center will host an open house on the lawn (which overlooks the football field) beginning at 11 a.m. I will be there for a brief time before I get ready to broadcast the game for the Wabash fans. Make plans to stop by and learn more about H-SC from the students, faculty, and staff gathered at the event.
