Cru Bryce Wilkersons runback  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWESiCAG9qU

Best of luck to UMHB.  I suspect they will get through to the Finals with a several score win on Saturday.

Let me preface by saying (a) Wilkerson is amazing (b) his effort and speed on that runback were legit (c) I think UMHB was the better team and absolutely deserved to win, (d) I am usually the last person to get on officials, and (e) I waited 2 days and re-watched the highlight several times to try to get over my own bias and make this seem less like sour grapes...

BUT how in the world were flags not thrown on the numerous blocks in the back throughout that return.  Specifically:

- 1:05-6 mark at the 31 yard line (UMHB player throws hands up to try to avoid call (well coached) but nonetheless smokes UST player in the back, who tumbles into another UST player)
- 1:11 mark at the 47 yard line
- 1:14 mark at the other 47/48 yard line

I fully admit to wearing (northern) purple tinted glasses, but those were all brutal misses - particularly the first and last one.

Upon further review, and seeing it on a much fuller screen, yes there were a couple other very questionable blocks on that particular play.  I say this not to blame the game outcome on the refs, but rather to either confirm or change what I thought I saw in person as the play developed.  The video replay absolutely confirms what we saw in person.

In the box score, there were 4 fouls called on each team.  In a quarter final game, against two of the top teams in the country, I'm ok overall with the "let them play" statement that such few flags makes.

I will say this...UST was generally awful with penalties early on in the year.  I know Coach Caruso likes to play aggressive, but UST fans knew those had to get cleaned up if we wanted to make a run against good teams.  As the year went on, I can happily say that was the case.  UST basically cut their penalties per game in half as the year went on.

They were really bad on penalties early - I'm not sure they weren't bad on penalties in this game, I think they got away with a bunch of questionable plays in the secondary.

I can't remember who said it, but yes, agree on the holds - they were pretty egregious on both sides of the line of scrimmage but I agree that UST seemed to be getting away with more of them.  That said, isn't the old adage "you could call holding on every play?" To me it seemed like they were really just letting them play - there were several no calls on what I thought were Pass Interference against St. Thomas and one big no call on what looked to be Pass Interference against UMHB on a pass to the endzone near the end of the first half (I think that was the drive that ended in a FG, but can't fully remember).

I'm totally ok with letting them play in general, and I do think the better team won.  I just think its a shame that the game was essentially decided on a play with numerous obvious missed calls (and ones that really mattered - the replay makes it look like each of the 3 players blocked from behind had a chance to make the tackle).

That is a hell of a [special] team.

What I have enjoyed most in this game is that the Umpire looks exactly like the sterotypical southern, small town, sheriff.

A quick slant, would've been a nice playing around in this game. Where is Glenn's playbook

I don't think it's available the way they have been spacing their linebackers

UMHB defense is exactly what anticipated...great.

What surprised is the special teams. The punter is D1 level and the return game speaks for itself

And as you wrote that he boomed like a 70 yarder against pressure

Pleased that UST's defense was clearly good enough to win against the defending champs. Our little used punter hit some boomers but it may have been just as effective to just do some directional punting and not worry about special teams.

And yes, Parea needs to get rid of the ball.

The block in the back was almost as brutal as that pick 6. UMHB is just better but not calling that or the PI in the endzone in the first half don't help.

Wow, Berry's campus is absolutely gorgeous.  As to St. Paul restaurants, I'd highly recommend the Nook for casual fare (excellent burgers, fries, etc.) - and it has a retro bowling alley in the basement.  If you are looking for something a little fancier and are willing to travel to Minneapolis, Jax CafĂ© is a fun steak/chops/lobster spot in the "Nordeast" section of the city, which is also where most of the best micro breweries are located.  It's also near a pretty fun German bar if you are looking to really get after it (Gasthof's), which comes with all the usual German fare and drink, a polka band, das Boot, and snuff shooters.

Not so fast on saying the extra point has to be tried everyone.  I have a friend of mine who's crew used to ref in the MIAC and now ref's D2 in the Northern Sun conference and will be working a D2 playoff game this weekend.  I asked him if SJU had to try the extra point since time expired.  He said no.  The game ended on the TD and St. John's wins by one point, end of story.  I then brought up the Augsburg situation and his answer to that was during the regular season if points contribute to how a conference decides tiebreakers for end of season conference positioning and or automatic qualifiers for playoffs, then the extra point needs to be attempted.  Because this was the playoffs, the game is done.

I hope he gets a chance to review the rulebook before the game. You could send this to him:

RULE 8 SECTION 3 ARTICLE 2.A.

Opportunity to Score

ARTICLE 2. A try is an opportunity for either team to score one or two points while the game clock is stopped after a touchdown. It is a special interval in the game which, for purposes of penalty enforcement only, includes both a down and the "ready'' period that precedes it.

a. The ball shall be put in play by the team that scored a six-point touchdown. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, the try shall not be attempted unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.

Boom. I believe the nerdy kids would say, "pwned."

Coe forced 9 turnovers and only scored 21 points??? How does that happen?
#13
And just to ensure a -k... SJU definitely should have gotten a delay of game penalty for the entire bench being on the field with a play remaining.  So UWP would have had to go 15 yards less to complete its miraculous scoop and score off the botched victory formation snap.

I don't think you can simply "concede." I think it is like stroke play tournament golf; you have to finish the 72nd hole even if for all intents-and-purposes is over.

As long as we are talking about "Johnnie magic," I have to say I greatly prefer the 2010 version of the Tommie/Johnnie finale to those in '08 and '09.
