Thanks, BashDad. I will definitely ask Reed about that if the matchup happens.

For your viewing pleasure, I posted my highlight videos from the last 9 Witt-Wooster games at this link (5 Wooster wins, 4 Wittenberg wins). I only wish I could go back further.

I was told yesterday they were examining the scenarios. Personally, I like my idea of the coaches wrestling for the trophy and the AQ. There's no way that doesn't make SportsCenter's top 10 plays.

Just had something pointed out to me that would seem to give Kenyon the AQ if Witt, OWU and Kenyon all win Saturday (and who knows, they could all lose). The first part of the second tiebreaker doesn't break the tie. But check out the second part of the second tiebreaker (this is straight out of the manual). If you start from the bottom of the standings and go up, the first opponent Wittenberg and OWU lost to is Wabash. Since there is common opponent provision here, Kenyon wins the tiebreaker.

2. Result(s) versus individual opponents examined in descending order, individually, until tie is broken. The tied teams must have a common opponent in order for the result to be considered; if not a common opponent, move to the next team in the standings. The first team to have beaten a higher-ranked team that is a common opponent wins the tiebreaker. If the tie is not broken in the descending order review, start from the bottom of the standings and examine opponents in ascending order. The first team to have lost to a lower-ranked team loses the tiebreaker (no common opponent provision in ascending review).

Trying to shed some more light on the tiebreaker. Here's the answer I got from the NCAC.
Me: Bret, I read the Crawfordsville paper's explanation of the tiebreaker, but wanted to double check on how it works. If the three tied teams are Witt, Wabash and Ohio Wesleyan, for example, would Wabash get the AQ because of its 2-0 record against those teams or would it go to the next tiebreaker because Witt and OWU didn't play?
Bret Billhardt: In that scenario we wouldn't use the head-to-head tiebreaker because it wouldn't be fair to apply that specific tiebreaker seeing that every team didn't play each other.

Bashbacker, I think this Facebook post by one of the Witt players sums it up: "What is my legacy? How will I be remembered? All or nothing on Saturday. Either I'm walking away a champion or nothing at all."
As for that 2002 game, any chance someone could put it on YouTube? I'm hoping over the years more old D3 highlights will show up on line. For example, someone recently posted Wittenberg's 2000 highlight reel to YouTube. I had typed the name of Casey Donaldson, the great Witt RB, about a thousand times over the years and had never even seen a highlight of him until I saw that 2000 video, which was the year before I started covering the Tigers.

I thought I'd post links to my video highlight packages from the last two Witt-Wabash games because I don't think you can find them on our site anymore. The video quality isn't great for the 2009 video, but most of the big plays are in there. I only wish I had a camera at that 2002 OT game.

No doubt, I overthought it. I knew it was a reach for Wooster to beat Wabash, but the last game I had seen Wooster play was versus Witt in the finale last season. I figured they'd be tough at home.

Another thing: I interviewed Wes Chamblee for the D3 preview before the season, and it was one of the best interviews I've had in a while and one of the easiest because he just opened up about his grandpa, his injury, etc., without much prodding. I was very impressed by him.

Well, you're probably right, Wally, about serving the hometown fans, but I wasn't trying to pass it off as great journalism either. It's just a game story. That said, it's really not something I would normally do, but sometimes you get carried away. ... And how did you know my college nickname?
Nothing but respect for Wabash and its fans, by the way. I've seen every game between the two schools since 2001. The rivalry just keeps getting better. It's part of the reason I fell in love with D3 football. Also, I did pick you guys to beat Witt in the D3 season preview. Of course, I also picked you to lose to Wooster and Witt to beat Wooster and thus a three-way tie. Shows you how much I know.

Well, that is what we do: fill content and sometimes babble, which also describes these forums. Nothing wrong with babble, especially when it's 10 words or so. Now a whole page devoted to backup QBs in the league, that would be overkill.
From covering this league for 11 years, I know how important having a second QB is. We saw that in 08 and 09, though both games could have gone either way even with backup QBs playing.

C'mon, Wabash fans, the story said Florence "might be" second best. Witt is certainly high on Florence, which is why he's gotten so many snaps in key spots this year, but it would be quite a leap to say a kid who has never started a game is "definitely" second best, compared to more experienced players like Belton. But I'm glad at least one of you read that in our "fish wrap" because I've always enjoyed reading what the fans are saying on here, even if few of them are from Witt.

Here is the current skull trophy. It's obviously not a real skull, which I think is what they want. Somehow I don't think carrying around a real skull would go over well these days.

Responding to a request for a photo of Ye Olde Skull Trophy, here is a photo of what may be the original skull. I found it in a filing cabinet in the library of the News-Sun along with a bunch of old photos of Wittenberg's campus. I doubt it has seen the light of day for decades. The date on the back is Sept. 22, 1938. It reads, "Witt Trophy, Gold Skull." I don't know if this is a real skull or what. I know the new trophy isn't a real skull.

David, there was a terrific lightning storm starting at 8:45 at Wittenberg, barely into the second half. It got worse and worse as the teams waited. It didn't actually start raining until 11. It looked at first as if it was going to be a no-contest. Then there was more discussion. The rule book came out. They agreed to try again on Sunday. There was no way they could have continued the game Saturday. That storm didn't let up until maybe 5 a.m.
