great game at the shoe. during the entire night the atmosphere was electic. i agree with oldumacfan about northwestern competing nicely in the miac---which they would.  i'm not so sure about morris, year in and year out.  northwestern would be a great addition to the miac, probably in more ways than basketball.

ao, i took your suggestion and checked out the archived video.  and you were not kidding, were you?   puzzling.   maybe the official just needed a brief rest.  otherwise, i really felt the officiating was pretty decent.

i agree with drake that illinois wesleyan is the real deal, but i think the tommies will
win today if they limit teddy archer's touches of the ball.  the kid is an absolute heart attack when he takes the ball into the middle.  he can d up,  but if basketball was a platoon sport---my guess is he would never be on the court offensively. :o
healy and nicolai will also have to fire at a little higher percentage for the tommies to prevail.

Yea I do not follow many sports outside of basketball so I do not know how Morris or NWC would fit into the MIAC (probably not well) but interms of basketball Morris could be a mid pack team and NWC could be top 3 to 4 team year in and ou
(mens), I know Morris womens was undefeated this year in the UMAC but I fully understand the level of competition in the UMAC.regardless I hope UST repsrespents the state of MN well and gets deep...Congrats to Carl Hipp as well!

Let me first say that this is exactly what Northwestern had in mind when deciding to switch from NAIA to NCAAD3.  Great basketball atmosphere and a great game to match it.  NWC even managed to bring a pretty good student section despite being on spring break.

As for the game, hats off to the the Tommies for bringing it from the tip.  They clearly didn't listen to the nonsense about being able to easily handle Northwestern as their hustle was probably the difference tonight.

Best of luck to UST through the rest of the tourney.

I will say this, the UMAC overall is a horrible conference but UM-Morris and NWC will cause fits for MIAC teams as they have for the last few years. Good luck to UST in the next round.

scary thought: northwestern going postal from the arc and beating st. thomas this week.   think it might be a bit difficult to listen to AO for awhile?   :o

don't think we are going to have to worry about it. ::)

Don't jinx us. I didn't think we'd have to worry about Carroll in 2007 but they went postal from the arc.
AGH!  NEVER mention that game again!

UST's perimeter defense is much better than in 2007. No chance this happens. UST by 30.

LOL by 30.  NWern has some very good guards, Lecheler and Chitwood.  Anyways, UST wins but I think Nwern will hold it much closer than you think.  The problem is NWErn has no bigs..St wins 68 56..in a semi competitive game..

I will probably make it to the Ham vs St. Thomas game tonight.  It is going to be very tough for Ham to win, unless Mike can get into the seams and find open shooters or drop it off to Hipp.  I just see St. Thomas outcoaching Hamlnie on every possesion.  Also, AO, you going to make it to the NWC vs UM-Morris game tomorrow?  How do you see that game playing out?

Ray Brown signed with the Lawton-Fort Still Calvary of the PBL.  The Cavs have NBA Vet Oliver Miller on the team.  Last years roster consisted of all D1 players, mostly high major.

How bout them Cobbs? :o They knocked off Moorhead State last night 83-78.

The MIAC is now 3-0 in "official" non-conference games against the NSIC.

Did not see that coming, considering they were losing by 17 points to St. Scholastica in the 2nd half and were beat by a Dalbey-less Morris team out of the UMAC.  Moorhead must be really bad this year!

We beat Concordia by 13 (Linz sr year) and we beat preseason number 1 Bethel by 10 however lost to St. Johns (also beat top 10 NAIA d2 school Jamestown College).  I frequent this message board becuase I have friends currently playing in the MIAC and yes the UMAC board is crickets.

HUHOOPS, sad thing is that loss came without Morris' best player (conference best player) bahahah.  Now if Morris would have lost I would have said the same thing you did, "there is no reason for that loss cougars".  I agree that 90 percent outside of the top 3 teams do not get recruited by MIAC or UMAC, but the top 3 sure do.  Like I said before we had no problems dismantling MIAC teams my sr year.

On to the topic, this is late but huge win for the Johnnies as is the win over Concordia for the Tommies.  HU is going to strgugle without Ray Ray but they will find scoring from Campbell and possibly Agguire and Taber.  I still think Concordia Moorhead is a darkhorse wiht a formidable frontline (Olmschied and Fraase).

Drake,
I think we all can agree that the UMAC has some horrible teams in their conference (I.E. Crown and Northland) however the top 3 teams can normally compete with the MIAC teams.  UM-Morris, without the POY, beat a midlevel Conc team that will be a darkhorse in the MIAC IMHO.  Heck when I played we were 2-1 against the MIAC and beat the preseason number 1 by 10.  What I am trying to get across is; the UMAC is a lot stronger than before and continues to get better.  I am not saying that the UMAC is stronger or equivalent to the MIAC but we are getting better.

I follow Oregon players throughout HS, and try to follow when they head of to college.  That being said, I saw Tyler Pannell ended up at Hamline, and some questions here about who could help put the ball in the basket for Hamline.  Well, lets say this, Hamline got a steal with this kid, he can flat out shoot the ball.  I believe his senior yr in HS he was 3rd highest scorer in the 6A ranks (highest classification here) as well as a leading Asst guy.  I was surprised actually to see that he went to a D3 school.  If he fits the system there, I would say he adds something Hamline appears to desperately need.  I looked at Hamlines last yr stats, and it seemed to me besides the Hipp kid, the offensive options were limited.  He played against some highly recruited guys, and led his team to wins, Terrence Jones at Jeff, who will be NBA, Terrence Ross, Jeff as well, NBA talent. Wiltjer from Jesuit etc.  Not saying he is athletic as Jones, or Ross, or have the height Wilter has, but watching him, you see a very competitive guy, who doesnt back down.  I would think he will have alot of success at a D3 school, and ultimately give Hamline some extra offensive options.  I think you Hamline fans got very lucky in this kid.

Last years scoring options were limited for Hamline?  They had arguebly the best all around scorer in the league, Ray Brown.  This year Michael Campbell will take over where Brown left off (although not as explosive as a scorer).

after playing ndsu tough, cc of north struggles with a umac team-morris cougars??  really?    :o  the apocolypse IS upon us!
does anyone know who is picked to win the UMESS  this year?   ???
ust's win over cc of the south was no surprise, though i WAS disappointed to see that tommies have done nothing to get rid of their hideous  purple, impossible to read web pages.   ::)

UM-Morris is picked to win the conference & Dalbey is preseason POY in the UMAC if I'm not mistaken.

More later... 8-)

These are both correct, however Dalbey did not even play in the game.  Typically there is only two squads in the UMAC that can beat MIAC teams and those teams are NWC and UM-Morris.  Although this year, when Dalbey returns, UM-Morris would do very well in the MIAC league, apocolypse is on us I guess.

This was without preseason UMAC player of the year Eric Dalbey as well.  If Dalbey would have been playing I am guessing this would not even have been a game.  BTW nice W for the Tommies over CSP as Concordia is no cupcake this year (Olafeso twins are very tough).

What a night for the Knights. UST definitely missed some shots, but I thought Carleton did a great job of contesting shots, played solid on the defensive glass and shot the ball well (obviously) in a very effective offensive performance. What a game by Blaise Davis--zero turnovers against that pressure in 30 minutes of action. Yes, only had three assists, but if it was like hockey or soccer where two assists are allowed on a score, he'd racked up 10-12. His passes over the top of the UST pressure often led to a second pass and open shot for a teammate. He also did a great job on Scott, really limiting his open looks.

Carleton's work against the press turned that pressure into a positive for the Knights--they actually held an 18-12 advantage in points off turnovers. Great game plan by the Carleton staff to not only beat the press, but make UST pay.

If you want to watch video of the two dunks, the Real CarletonSID has thrown up a clip of just the dunks. He'll have a full video recap later today.

I've wanted to say this the last two weeks, but if I had an MVP vote it would go to Jeremy Sutherland.

Yea I would have taken out Nicolai and replaced him with Sutherland in the MVP talks.  Sutherland, Burtzel, and Brown.

Quote from: AO on February 16, 2010, 05:58:44 PMThe NCAA, Hamline and you and I can't determine his best course of action.

Not without all of the relevant data, we can't. But that doesn't mean that he'll correctly determine what is his best course of action.
It wouldn't matter if you did have the data.  Just like you were wrong to suggest Joldersma shouldn't try and go pro, you also shouldn't decide what is best for Ray.  If the decision he is making is deciding whether or not to take drugs again, then obviously you can decipher the correct option, but this is not that sort of "responsible" vs "irresponsible" decision.

Aww c'mon AO, don't make me waste the +k on you.  Leave well enough alone.  You're on the Gacman end of the debate stick - sliding down that slippery slope without your sea legs to prepare you for the plunge, & not the Nestea plunge either. ;D

Cut your losses, take advantage of the free admission at the Leonard Center & take in the Carleton-Mac game tonight.  You can watch the Jonker man go to work & pick up a few tips for your next run at the gym.  Watch him back his man down on the block, do the bully up & under, or what is quickly becoming my favorite - the "Jonkerator."  After he schools his man with the inside move, Jonker comes back with the counter - the turnaround Jumper.  And he can turn & hit the jumper off either shoulder.

Or finally, tell you what - I'll quit hustling Jonker, you quit the Sensei debate, & mebbe UMACfan can write 3 consecutive posts without referring to Ray Brown. ;)

Awww ... c'mon now Drake.  I have to stick up for my friend, and recently peoples posts have been more ignorant than ever with regards to the Ray Brown topic.  I will try though after this post.

I played with a dude in the UMAC who did not have half the skills that Ray had and was drafted in the CBA after attending the Mike Hart camp in Las Vegas.  He later went on to have several offers from overseas teams after the CBA collapsed.  anyways my point is that Ray can definitely get on with an overseas team IF he goes to the right camps and has the right representation.  The money depends on how well he plays on the first team that he gets with.  Ray has the ability to play overseas, people stlil have to remember that he is playing with an injured shoulder and still putting up 20ppg in a defensive/fundamental minded league.  Hell, look at Myles McCay from Whitewater.  He is playing overseas and making decent money while putting up nice stats and Ray has much more potential/ability/skills than him.
