Cobbers upset Tommies 54-52.    Tommies shoot 39% from field.  Nice win for Concordia.  Tommies still have to go to Gustavus and Carleton-venues were UST has struggled in the past.  Hopefully,   this will make the last half of the year a little bit more interesting and get the board going.

AO,
It's pretty difficult to get calls in the BIG Ten when you are the visitor-flop and all by the Wolverines.  I bleed Maroon and Gold, but I didn't think that officials called a bad game.  That said, I didn't see the Michigan/OSU game, so I will reserve judgement on the Michigan defensive skills.

The way Michigan played last night-especially on the defensive end, they looked to me to be the best team in the BIG Ten.  Tubby's guys turned the ball over at crucial times and I'm not sold on Andre Hollins point guard skills against high caliber defender.  He is a very good 2-guard trying to played the point. Yogi at IU and Burke at Michigan ate him up.  Maverick A-looked overmatched as the backup PG.  Goph's have a very nice team. but they have some improving to do in the next six weeks if they expect to go deep in the NCAA tourney.

Mike Keating joins Toms' men's basketball staff

August 04, 2011

Former Tommie standout Mike Keating will join John Tauer's men's basketball coaching staff at St. Thomas for 2011-12.

Keating coached last season as an assistant at Rosemount High on the staff of head coach Bryan Schnettler, a former Tommie teammate. He's also worked at Tauer's youth camps the last 10 summers.

"We're thrilled to have Mike Keating join the UST coaching staff," Tauer said. "Mike was an outstanding player in high school at Cretin-Derham Hall, at the Division II level at St. Michael's College, and finally as a captain at the University of St. Thomas. As a player Mike was noted for his all-around abilities and his stellar basketball IQ. His understanding of and passion for the game of basketball will serve him well in coaching college basketball. Mike's recent experience playing in college and coaching at the high school level will be a perfect complement to the rest of our staff. Mike will focus his work on skill development with our players, offense, scouting, and recruiting."

A St. Paul native who grew up 15 blocks from UST, Keating was an all-stater and Minnesota Mr. Basketball finalist at Cretin-Derham Hall, were a basketball teammate was Joe Mauer.

He scored 1,470 points in his college career, which included two seasons at Division II St. Michael's (Vt.) and his final two at St. Thomas. With the Tommies, he was an All-Region and All-MIAC forward who helped UST win back-to-back conference titles and compile a 47-10 record. As a senior he averaged 15.3 points and 9.1 rebounds and converted 82% at the foul line. As a junior, he led MIAC players in 3-point shooting in conference games (50%).

Tauer, an assistant coach for the Tommies the last 11 seasons, was named in May to replace retiring coach Steve Fritz. His coaching staff now consists of returning assistants Jon Hughes, Don Johnson and Tommy Fritz, plus Keating and former Carleton assistant Jim Hayes.

St. Thomas won its final 12 games last winter to finish 30-3 and claim the MIAC's first national championship in Division III men's hoops. The Tommies graduated starters Tyler Nicolai, Alex Healy, Anders Halvorsen and Teddy Archer, plus versatile contributor Brady Ervin. They return at least eight key players, though, and have attracted a promising recruiting class of 2011-12 freshmen.

Going on a tangent, I was/am embarrassed to be in the MIAC due to the inconsistency of our refs. I am sure some fans will disagree, but I felt there were several calls tonight that were blatantly incorrect.

Big win for St. Thomas last night! Very talented team, and I always enjoy watching Nicolai play his game. Congratulations on a fine season and an exceptional D3 college career.

Taking nothing from St Thomas' fine young men.... BUT.... if you were at the game and had the ability to be even somewhat impartial, this particular win against Hamline does not happen without the extra effort of apparently St Thomas' 6th man on the court...The Officials.

Ref  Louis "Old Spice" Garrison was so blatant in his actions -- changing the momentum and tempo of this game thru missed  and phantom calls, it was a crime. The other two officials, Mike Petrich and Steve Bullert were no better allowing this to continue from the 8 minute remaining mark in the first half (HU up by 17) through most of the remaining game. I'm not sure how they slept last night knowing how they directly affected the outcome of any game, especially a MIAC semi final playoff game.

The MIAC should be ashamed.

I see Mose is on the board & obviously he's biased, but no Tommie blood courses through my veins. One word - Bull.

I wear purple colored glass-but come on it wasn't the ref's that lost the game.  UST down nineteen points in the first half and hamline blew the lead.-refs don't makeup nineteen points.  Carl Hipp was amazing-and should be the MVP of the conference!  I thought the difference maker in the game was Anders Halvorsen-he played with  confidence and a sense of urgency. t
Finally, Teddy is Teddy.  If he's your guy you love him, if not he is the villian in a bad 'b movie' for the opposing team. He's been doing his defensive routine for the last five years at UST-this isn't anything new and I am sure that this ref crew has experienced Teddy's act

MN Transitions is coached a MN Sun sports writer and the head of the Magic AAU program.  I know they have tried to upgrade schedule by playing some 3A/4A schools in 2009/2010. In 2005, one of MN transitions player scored around 100 points in a game in against an over-matched team that caused a bit of controversy.  I saw them play Minnetonka this year when Mn Transitions lost by a shot with 4 seconds remaining.  They went about seven players deep and led the entire game against tonka-they tried to take the air out of the ball in last five minutes in the game but their strategy failed.

UPDATE: Why wasn't Archer included in the senior class recognition tonight? He's listed as a senior on the UST web site and has played varsity for the past three seasons. I really hope that was an oversight because I'm not sure I can handle another year with Archer in my life...

I believe he is applying for a medical redshirt that goes back to his freshman year
