Great atmosphere at NP tonight. Announced attendance of over 650 and that sounds about right.

NP controlled the second half, with an effective passing game. Wheaton played 7 or 8 behind the ball, hoping to spring a counter-attack. Park had particular success on the wings, with their speed, passing, and technical ability giving Wheaton defenders fits.

On the other hand, North Park was pretty shaky in defending set pieces. They allowed 2 or 3 free headers in the box and could have been down a goal or two if not for some luck and stellar goaltending by Ahlberg. They need to improve.

The winning goal with 10 minutes remaining was a bit of a defensive breakdown, with Grahn able to control the ball at the top of the 18, cut back and dribble through 3 defenders and slot home from a tight angle. The ball pin-balled between a few Wheaton legs before Grahn eventually found himself 1 on 1 with the keeper.

Too bad the championship game won't be in Chicago, I'd love to see Park fight for the title!

On the plus side, NPU must have a record numbers of posters on D3Hoops right now.
Nope, we've just been lurking for the past 3 years...

Yes, the championship games of CCIW soccer alternate between the highest remaining men's and women's seeds in alternating years.  If this were last year, the games would be at North Park where they belong!

After the great conference season NP soccer has had, securing the #1 seed, it is dissapointing that the automatic bid comes down to the last game of the season AT the #3 seed's home field.   The NCAA bid is on a points system, 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss.  Going into Saturday, NP has 18 points and Wheaton has 15.  A win or tie, and NP is in.  A loss, Wheaton gets 18 points and wins the tiebreaker (latest head-to-head result; why that is the tiebreaker is beyond me).

I'd say there was easily 500-700 fans at the NP game on Wednesday, so having the final at home would have been huge.  Oh well, NP fans travel well (to Wheaton) so I am expecting the NP fans will be louder (though not larger) than the Wheaton contingent.  Beating Wheaton 3 times in a row is a tough task, but they are up to it.  Good luck.

...Now back to your regularly scheduled basketball program...
