Messages - chewey

The Johnnies will be as good as their defense this year.  If the defense is as terrible as it was last year, it will be another year of mediocrity.  Seems like some lethargy and acceptable mediocrity may have set in at SJU.

I wish I could be there to watch the Johnnies take on Lintfield tomorrow.  Let's go J's and make it 5 - 0.........

After reading the MHB fans, an SJU win in Texas next weekend would be just as satisfying as the SJU win over Lintfield in 2002 after they said how David Russell would  run all over us and  Ty Mathews and George Carter would connect for about 5 TD's.  Mathews spent a lot of time on his back that day, as I recall.  In 2000, Hardin Simmons was supposed to be all that and SJU beat them pretty handily.

UWW fans have a similar Linfield story from 2005. That game put UWW on the D3 map.

You guys have been awfully tough ever since.  Always a fun trip going to WW and you guys have been a good match for MUC.  I promised my wife that I wouldn't go to Crusin' Chubby's on the way......fortunately, she has a good sense of humor

Chewey,

Play that game again and David Russell would leave a cleat mark on Duff's forehead!

That was a good team you guys had that year and 2003 when we played at SJU and, especially, in 2004.   Hard to see what's happened to PLU.  That program has been sort of let down since Frosty retired.  Your coach staff has changed it appears but the program is still strong.  I wonder if Bluenote is still around.......good guy

Last chime in...Johns win the rest of the schedule.
Watch the NWC game tomorrow afor the and see what's in store for the MIAC winner.

Get past the WIAC first....then we will see.

Yes, hopefully the MIAC winner meets Lintfield and beats them like SJU has done 3 times.........
For those scoring at home D.O.C is a Linfiled supporter NWC is his home conference not the WIAC.
Linfield  defeated PLU- both Top 25 teams, that's why D.O.C said to watch the game to see what's in store for the MIAC winner. Meaning, hopefully the MIAC winner meets Linfield in the play-offs.In the past the NCAA has sent the WIAC winner  to the "East" or "North" bracket when the "West" has been pretty heavy with top teams
Got it?  8-)

NS Sherlock. The knock on Linfield has been their inability to advance in the playoffs despite much hyped about regular season teams. They lost at home in the playoffs to Wara last season, so that's what the reference was in regards to.

How do you beat STU at their place one week and then come home on Homecoming and, knowing you're in the drivers seat (or one of them) for a conference championship, stink up Clemens Stadium as a sewage lagoon?   Bruns and the D looked god-awful; absolutely brutal.

Majorly disappointed that they didn't hire Grant.  If the program's been falling off the last 3 years, why does it make sense to hire from within?  I think we may be in for a STU-esqe stage of mediocrity as when they had Don Roney and Mal Scanlan both of whom, I believe, had been assistant coaches.  Probably burned bridges with Grant and Ramler.  I'm sure Gary's a good coach but recruiting, which he's been in charge of, has fallen off massively and I think Grant would have sparked much more enthusiasm and would have done some different things with recruiting.  Too bad.

I agree with pretty much everything here, Chewey (although very smart guys on this board like Johnnie ESQ really made me think about other possibilities). Like I told someone, Larry Kehres has been a longtime assistant too. That turned out all right. Then again, so had Roney. But Scanlan, I think, was the longtime, highly successful coach at Cretin-Derham Hall before taking over as head coach at St. Thomas, which does show it's not easy being great at one level and taking it to the other.

But yeah, I wanted Grant or Ramler. But a lot of people who know more than me have a lot of trust in Fasching, so I look forward to great successes.

Great tweet from Reusse, regarding Grant withdrawing:

St. John's always has run a cheap football program. Gag did it w/ mirrors, but now that giant has risen in St. Paul, that's impossible.

Good points.  I did not know that Scanlan had been at CDH.  What concerns me in Hemaseth's statement is the stuff about FB being part of the total SJU experience, etc., etc.  While that is certainly true I get the feeling that the real emphasis on remaining competitive is beig understated, perhaps purposely.  While any respectable school is not going to state explicitly that football is all we're about and we're going to spend massive $$$ accordingly, I think all of the language in the public statement about FB being part of the broader community and part of the overall SJU academic experience is somewhat telling.  Grant may have indicated that he needed this or that and more coaches and more $$$$ to keep SJU competitive with STU, etc. and he may have been told that such a commitment was not realistic or something.  Too bad he withdrew.  SJU can't have an open checkbook but it's clear that they need to spend a lot more money on athletics.  If the last 3 years worth of sub-par (at least for SJU standards) football seasons doesn't accentuate that reality for the administration, I don't know what would.  I'm sure Jimmy has forgotten more about FB than I'll ever know and he's always been very nice and cordial to me, a contemporary at SJU when he attended there, I get the impression that he has a much different personality from John and may rub some players differently than John.

Linfield fans support their team.  They talk smack and they're fun to interact with.  You go out there and you'll see how friendly they are; a great group and a great program.  They told us when we went out in 2002 that "you wont run on us" and Crowley got 120 yards I think and their QB, Matthews, spent a ton of time on his back.  They had a great back, David (???), and a great team and the Linfield fans were great hosts.  They talk smack and get pissed when you refer to Linfield as "Lintfield" but, like Mount Union fans, you wont find a better or more supportive group.

Chewey, is that you?

Sound the alarms!

Yep.  Sound the alarms to be sure.........I miss going out to Linfield and beating them after all of that smack and then having them come to SJU in 03 and beating them again - the year their team was even better (but so was ours).  I hope Mike Grant or whomever it winds up being can get us back to that level.  Hopefully, the D coaches will stay in tact.

Historically, SJU has been a place where a bunch of good, middle-class, unpretentious, "rural"/out state (about 60% to 65%) guys, many who happen to be really good football players, attend.  Gagliardi and the staff have NEVER encouraged the crap that I saw at the UST game (late  hits, cheap shots, etc.).  Players just came to SJU because of Gagliardi and his philosophy.  Bud Grant said that he'd not want Dan Grant - who graduated a year before me - to play for anyone other than Gagliardi.  For some reason -- probably because SJU only has 2 active recruiters compared to STU's 8 -- this message is not getting out as well as it used to.  The reality that they fail to understand (evidently) is that you need about 6 to 8 more people on the staff to get the message out and compete in a much more competitive recruiting environment.  They need to work with alumni to determine the good players in different areas.  In Mankato, for instance, they should be connecting with alumni here to see who the good players are at East, West, Loyola, Nicollet, New Ulm, etc and go after them.  The coaching staff is excellent, in my opinion and regardless of the past 3 years.  Getting more people to scout and recruit players is what needs to happen from my vantage point.
