It's been a while but I just felt the need to post as well.

I covered Saint John's for the 2002 season, my first job out of college.  That team was so much fun to watch and cover, but memories of John are what stand out 10 years later.  He's such an open and friendly man.  My first interview with him in late July ended up with him asking me all sorts of questions and running over an hour...I think I had 5 minutes worth of usable "interview" questions.

Best of luck in retirement John....you've certainly earned it.

Upstate New Yorkers may have already known this but Jason Boltus' brother is making noise in Division I Lax.

http://www.laxmagazine.com/college_men/DI/2009-10/news/051910_nuts_and_boltus_why_army_can_go_all_the_way

Pep happened to have caught some of a replay of an Army-Navy lax contest and figured that was Boltus' brother....who is, as a matter of fact, coached by none other than Alfred lacrosse great Joe Alberici! Way to go, Joe! Pep always enjoyed watching the Saxons when Alberici was on the turf.

Go Army!
(On Saxon Warriors!)

P.S. The Alfred fight song has the same starting melody line as the Army fight song. In the band's kazoo infancy, Pep had to drill the Alfred song into AUKaz00's head, as he was prone to wander back to his Army football days as a tot growing up in Goshen near West Point.

Saw that last season against SU, but this season I notice Fellicetti from Notre Dame is from the same town as Ithaca's former QB Josh.  I assume they are related too.

Ugh.  That's not what I wanted to see to start the day.  798891 - Do you know how serious they are?  Really don't like to see Scalice on that list.

Hey,
Not to interrupt this lovefest, but I'll be in town this weekend and need some opinion on whether to go to Carnegie Mellon-Hobart or St. Lawrence-Alfred as a precursor to Rochester-St. John Fisher.

Opinions appreciated (although the 1 pm kick at Alfred might become my "overriding factor" since I fly in Saturday morning).

Also if any board regular would be at either game, that would be nice to know.
With no real basis, I'd say go to CMU-Hobart.

I'd agree.  I don't see the Larries giving Alfred much of a game.

Springfield gets week #1 victory with a stomping of Fitchburg. Not saying that the pride is back to it's "Sharpe days" form, but Carter's #'s look like he may bring a bit more to the table here in 09. Threw for a nice TD and ran for: Josh Carter     10  188    4  184  2 79 18.4. dlip is just high on the pride that's all. Call it a hunch. Anyway, great seeing the season begin this week, dlip cant even handle the happiness that comes with the D3football season.

I couldnt agree with you more. I think we'll really know that we have something if we can beat up on king's this week.

I think it was Q who brought it up last week....but Springfield has a history of doing this.  2nd year QB really grasps the system and has a breakout year.  Could be a very interesting wrinkle in the E8 this year.

Things are always a little weird on the road when it comes to Ithaca. They've been handed upsets in the past.

that's an understatement.  I am worried about this one on the road as well as the (premature?) Top 10 ranking.  Hopefully it plays out to be deserved.  This week will be an interesting one for IC.  Was thinking about making the trip but SU - Penn State ended up being a more interesting option.  Hopefully Mr Warwick keeps the Hotline going with updates.

Q - Good points all around.

I would also add that it's always been cyclical in D-III as well.  While MUC is the best ever and not looking like they will slip anytime soon there have been these runs for years.  Dayton, Augustana, Ithaca, etc.  I would love to see more than those 2 teams there all the time, but it will happen at some point and in the meantime, I am with Q - enjoying beating SJF, Cortland, etc.

Pat - I thought it was a pretty good read though.

Yikes, I just went and read the article..... bad writing + bad editing = ouch. Plus, what's the point?

"Dear DI fans, you should watch DIII! To prove my point, here are all the things wrong with it, with no insight offered, because I've done no research and no journalism. By the way, go Bombers!!"

Anyone on this board could have done a better job.

uhhhh....he's on this board on a regular basis.

The Distillery on Winton rd has great food, cold beer and lots of tv's. It is easy to get to from Fisher, leave Fisher west on 490 to 590 south only 15 minutes max.

Seconded, that's a great place to eat and grab some beers. MUC folks should hit that up.

Also would recommend the Dinosaur BBQ along with Upstate... get the Big Azz Pork plate, can't go wrong.

It must be something about the upstate Dinosaur BBQs, KS nephew, co-workers have all raved about it.  KS has had it from the Dinosaur in NYC and it didn't impress KS.  Two people KS works with went to Syracuse and love the one in NYC, KS doesn't get it.  But then KS has had BBQ in TN, NC and Texas and it fricken ruled.

KS - the one in Harlem doesn't stand up to the one in Syracuse.  I have heard it's gotten better (haven't been back since the first 2 times) but it was no where near the Syracuse location when I have been there.

Pep,

Not much to report from Butterfield as far as improvements, other than the barrage of emails from Ithaca's Alumni office asking for donations and announcing their fundraising completion for the new athletic center, which NSRB thinks they will be naming Dragonslayer Stadium whenever they decide to break ground.

In the mean time, NSRB hopes someone does some recruiting to fill the ranks of the FDC, which have grown thin since the founding members have departed South Hill.

starting to get very exited for Bomber weather... you can almost TASTE IT!

yeah - the new complex looks nice, but those emails got old fast.  My favorite was when they started counting down...."you have only 5 days left to donate..."  oh yeah?

But what happens if you beat that quality team? I would always rather take the shot and lose than not play and back in to the tourny. I think it would have to be a money influenced desision.

Not to mention it is Hobart and not some meiocre team. They have been very impressive in the last few years, and I would say, if they played Hobart this season they would be the favorite. Maybe only slightly, but still a favorite.

Yea you are right about beating that quaility team.  And it goes the other way as well.  If SJF loses to MUC, that loss isn't going to mean as much as a loss to Alfred.  But the win would really put you in over other pool C teams if you end up having 1 or even 2 losses.

But we have seen that the 9 game schedule has worked out and benefitted teams.  Mostly before the pool A bids I think but it all depends.

that was basically my thinking, I really think the possible benefits outweigh the possible negatives to it.

morning boys--
any word on the schedule for fisher?

also --E8 grumblings?

ive said it before- but id hate to see it dissolve.

If that were to happen, it would just be a football thing right?  The conference as a whole (all sports) is alive and well.  I can't see the member schools for all sports wanting this to happen.

I would be curious as to the thought process for Hobart turning down the tenth game....and in reality if they were just turning down playing AU.  Seems like the 9 game schedule doesn't help and ultimately can only hurt them come playoff selection time.

Bombers - this comes up everytime someone plays Mount.  The fisher guys got riled up about the same thing before their game last year and again this season.

What are they going to write?  Teams play their best against Mount and usually still lose.  Is it possible, yeah anything is.  Is it likely, no.  I don't know if you want them to make up something or have real analysis.  To me, thats real analysis since no one has stopped them recently.

If this was the late 80s, I imagine anyone analyzing it would have said the same thing about Dayton, Auagustana and sometimes IC.

when I lived in Minnesota, there were a bunch of bars in the sticks that always had more snowmobiles in the parking lots that cars in the winter.  I always thought that was interesting.

While I am a little biased as well (I had a great working relationship with Mike (andQ) in college), I have to agree.  Bombers, that was out of line.

He goes well beyond what most schools do and I found him to be one of the most accomdating SID's that I worked with.  I have a lot to base this on as well (Bombers, do you have comparisons?) as I worked as an on-air sportscaster right out of school.  I will also give a shout out to Michael Hemmesch at Saint Johns here as well.

Bombers - also, the Women's Soccer player you refer to was not an Athletic Dept or SID project.  That was part of an article in the ICQ, and I assume is just up because it highlighted the "Student Athlete" at Ithaca.
