Okay, I found an error myself.  Coe can't clinch this week unless Central also loses, which is impossible since they're idle.  ;)

I just sorted all this out, and unless I've screwed something up, Wartburg, Simpson, and Central are already toast as far as the automatic bid.  At a 6-2 tie, Coe actually wins every tiebreak EXCEPT a three-way tie with Dubuque and Central.

Breaking it down:

Coe, Dubuque, Wartburg, Central: Coe/Wartburg 2-1, Dubuque/Central 1-2; Coe beat Wartburg, Coe wins.
Coe, Dubuque, Wartburg, Simpson: Coe 3-0; Coe wins.
Coe, Dubuque, Simpson: Coe 2-0; Coe wins.
Coe, Dubuque, Wartburg: Coe 2-0; Coe wins.
Coe, Dubuque, Central: all 1-1.  Rose Bowl Rule in effect; Coe made playoffs most recently, so they're eliminated, and Dubuque beat Central, so Dubuque wins.  (Note: I am assuming that just making the playoffs is what counts here, since that's what the wording of the tiebreaker indicates.  If it's claiming the autobid that counts, then Central's out (2009), and Coe wins the tiebreaker.)

So, THIS week, if Coe wins and Wartburg loses, Coe gets to claim the autobid this week since even a loss next week won't give anyone a leg up.  Obviously, Dubuque clinches the outright title if they win.

Anyone see an error there?

Quote from: gordonmann on November 14, 2010, 04:55:00 PMNot surprised at all that Widener went for it.  They had all the momentum and nothing to lose.

I wouldn't say I was "surprised" either, given the situation, but I'd say the number of coaches who'd opt to kick the PAT and go to overtime vastly outnumbers the ones who'll let it ride.  Plus, if I were a Widener fan sitting in the stands, watching them score the TD in that fashion and then miss the PAT would be like inflating a party balloon to the size of a minivan then popping it.  ;)

Regardless, any game that ends like that is a classic, and that's the main thing I was getting at.

After reading the game story on the Widener/DelVal game, I only have three words.  The first two are "Giant" and "Brass".  Must have been incredible to see that ending.

Yep.  Jon beat me to it.

I only beat you to it because you had more to say about it.  ;)

I've been looking for concrete information on this for a couple of weeks now, and now that I have it... well, it is a screwy tiebreaker, but don't the power rankings help determine the conference schedule for this year?

In that case, aren't they essentially using this tiebreaker as a proxy for conference SOS anyway?

Welcome to the boards Jon.  :)

Your point is well taken.  However, the power ranking basically assumes that each of the teams (1 through 9) will be in the same relative position of strength to each other from year to year.  The result is that the SOS for a prior year effects what happens this year, and is not necessarily reflective of the actual conference SOS this year.

Right, right... Seems to me the largest problem is that they go so far back for the power ranking to set this year's schedule.  If it was based on last year, it would still be imperfect, but not quite as egregious.

Still, may as well just use SOS in its normal form rather than try and proxy it, I suppose.

MAC and NJAC announce MAC-NJAC Challenge for 2012 and 2013

The conferences will pair up opponents for non-conference games the next two seasons.  The already-existing TCNJ/Florham series will be part of the rotation, and the big money matchup looks to be Rowan/DelVal.

what does the 2007 team ( which likely has maybe 20 people still on team from '07 and 1 who contributed in '07) have to do with this year ?
