You kind of have to look past the stupid LA Times blocking device, but it says Bill Redell formerly of Oaks Christian HS met with the Oxy staff and is strongly considering becoming the next head coach.

Cal Lutheran football coach Ben McEnroe received a Google alert Wednesday informing him three players had pledged their commitment to his program on National Signing Day.

There was one slight problem. Division III schools don't participate in the National Letter of Intent Program.

Although players can say they will play at CLU, there is a long way to go until everything becomes official.

Players must first be admitted to the school, receive their financial aid package and pay their deposit, which generally occurs in April.

"Part of the challenge is a kid can love us and we can love them, but if he doesn't get enough money, it's not going to happen," McEnroe said. "We have to recruit around six to eight guys to get one."

While many college football programs have paused to take a deep breath after signing day, McEnroe and his staff have cranked up their recruiting efforts.

They had 20 recruits on campus for visits last week.

"We took some massive hits on signing day because some of the kids we were recruiting signed," McEnroe said. "We set a little bit higher standard for ourselves. We want to recruit guys being recruited heavily by scholarship programs. We want that caliber of player and we have been successful with some of those guys."

McEnroe breaks CLU's recruiting into three parts — pre-signing day recruiting, post-signing day recruiting and an extra section in the spring for potential transfers.

"I tell our staff that I want them to be better recruiters than coaches. We can make up for deficiencies on the field, but we can't make up for deficiencies in recruiting," he said. "That is the No. 1 thing I look at when I hire a coach — his recruiting ability and potential."

Cal Lutheran returns 19 of 22 starters from its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship team. The biggest recruiting priority is finding a few defensive ends to help replace Jordan Barta and Jeff Miller.

McEnroe also wants to find a quality freshman quarterback to groom behind senior starter Jake Laudenslayer, and build depth at the running back and offensive line positions

CLU coaches can't travel to recruit because the SCIAC has a rule preventing it, so everything is done by telephone and e-mail.

"A few of the Northwest Conference schools are down here in Ventura County and Southern California visiting guys, but we have to fight them off on the telephone," McEnroe said. "It's not that we don't want to travel, it's just that we are restricted. It makes it a bit tougher to compete for a national championship, but that is the hand we are dealt."
