It's always illuminating to read Old Boy's post-game analyses (most gratefully when he eschews opining about politics
).
I watched both the live broadcast and Presto's replay. What a gutsy effort by QB Nathan Martinez in the final two minutes. He scampered for 21 yards deep into CMS territory, threw a TD pass to First Year WR Evan Aguon and then shot through for our 2 point conversion.
Old Boy is spot on, as usual, that Redlands should've won by 14. I propound that we threw away 10 points on two freakish mistakes. 3 points were lost on a blocked chip-shot FG by our kicker who was 2/2 on PATs. Even more freakish, by a country mile, was Martinez throwing an INT when the Bulldogs were a couple yards away from a touchdown.
Of considerable concern is our penchant in recent years for perpetrating dumb unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, such as yesterday's for roughing the passer. If the Bulldogs gift yardage like that to Chapman or CLU, then a defeat could get "Linfield Ugly". Given that the Panthers play at our Homecoming game and CLU on our Senior Day, I'm remaining optimistic that the Dawgs will prevail against at least one of those tough, well-coached opponents.
Again, Muchas Gracias to Old Dog for his insightful commentaries.
Stay safe, y'all!

I'm delighted that my alma mater has reinstated Coach Maynard. Doubtless, his future players will continue to benefit from his mentoring life skills as well as football skills. Although my participation in Redlands sports was much earlier, our coaches helped significantly to prepare me for leadership as military officer, especially when serving with an air rescue squadron in Vietnam only a few years after graduation.
From my era the wide range of active alumni inludes the CEO of a major commercial bank, senior foreign policy advisor to President Reagan, senior foreign policy envoy for President Clinton, treasurer for the state of Colorado, and the founding Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. We still regularly attend Homecoming Days or smaller regional reunions and make donations or endowments. Never have our divergent political backgrounds/attitudes held the slightest relevance to how deeply we respect each other's achievements and how very enjoyable we find each other's company, which is why I find it curious that some folks frequently use this football Board to propound their political or cultural viewpoints. There's a plethora of online politics forums available for fervent argumentation, and so I commend sagacious Pat Coleman for the amount of time he must spend monitoring all the Boards to obviate discussions from drifting too far afield.
"RFB" is to be lauded for being instrumental in galvanizing significant alumni support for the reinstatement of Coach Maynard, which has been a welcome ray of sunshine that's raised my spirits a great deal!

Congrats to St. John's for an emphatic road victory and to Chapman Coach Bob Owens for the best season in their history.
Chapman broadcasters reckon all their skill position players will return next year. However, there will be "a lot of holes to fill" on the Panthers' Dee that gave up 647 yards today.
Chapman scored a consolation TD in final seconds of the game and then went for a two point conversion which ended up a foot short.

Oshkosh upset Whitewater 27-20. West region playoff bracketology is now all the more mystifying. Whitewater QB had a very ordinary night. If that's his quality of play, the well-coached Chapman Panthers have a real good chance of getting a rare SCIAC playoff victory.
My alma mater, Redlands, looks likely to receive a bid, but we'll lose first round as usual. The culture of the Bulldogs is such that we invariably commit way more silly penalties than our opponents do, with multiple unsportsmanlike flags being our specialty. I'm not saying we're a dirty team, but others might think so.
Redlands hasn't had a 9 win season in decades, so I'm mucho happy with this relatively young squad which will return about 2/3 of starters, including QB, RB's and best WR's.

Oxy's improvement continued against La Verne with QB Greaves passing for 300 yards again. His final pass from La Verne's 30 yard line, which got intercepted in the end zone, would have set up Oxy for overtime. La Verne won 27-20.
Next season, I reckon it's highly unlikely that Oxy will be winless in SCIAC games. Greaves is a Senior, but still has a year of eligibility remaining if he stays for another degree.
Upcoming Cal-Lutheran hosting Redlands features QB's who have the two highest passer efficiency ratings in the conference. Redlands needs a solid win to have any chance of getting a playoff slot, but CLU will play tough in the Battle for the Smudge Pot.

Redlands alum and record holder for interceptions, Jeff Thomas, coaches Puget Sound to their first victory against Whitworth since 1995. It took a decade, but Thomas has now seen his efforts to build a winning Loggers culture finally succeed. He is still under 40 years old, so let's hope that UPS can obviate losing him to "headhunters" from D2 teams or wherever. This year UPS has defeated two SCIAC teams, CMS and La Verne, while falling to Redlands.

Badly jinxed all 3 SCIAC teams that I unwisely ranked at #10 this season. 😎 My final one, CMS Stags, lost to the Pomona Pitzer Sagehens today which means that CMS now shares the SCIAC Championship with Redlands Bulldogs. Best of luck to the Stags who will be going to the playoffs for the first time in well over a decade.
Pomona Pitzer had one of its best seasons in recent memory, losing just twice in conference play by a total of 6 points. Redlands did a lot better than I had expected with a relatively young squad, so the Bulldogs will be returning nearly 3/4 of their starters. Last but not least, well done Occidental to show the grit needed to overcome the disappointment of forfeiting 2017.
Congratulations to all in the West Region for a scintillating season. Also congrats to Pat Coleman, Josh Smith and the D3 'Kickoff 2018" crew who accurately predicted the top SCIAC teams and even called that its champion would suffer a defeat in conference games.
Of course, we West Region Fan Pollsters owe a ton of gratitude to "02 Warhawk" for his indefatigable efforts and exceedingly good-natured running of this!
Cheers!

02 Warhawk,
Appreciated your salient point about UWL's defeat by a scholarship NAIA team.
As a Fan Poll rookie, those opponents from outside of D3 have turned my evaluation of a couple teams' records from a mere head-scratcher into what Winston Churchill once characterized the Russians: "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma."
Btw, muchas gracias for doing such a fine job running this WRFP!

D O.C.,
Indeed, I went there before Contreras. It's soooooo far into the mists of time that one of my teachers was Cap Sheue, the widely respected coach in whose honor the HBHS football field is named.
Thanks for the headsup about "O. C."! During the Punic Wars, we had way more in common with guys in Venice and Belmont Shore, just a speedy drive up Pacific Coast Highway, than inlanders such as Buena Park and Orange.
Cheers,

Oc Guy,
Chapman got undervalued during the preseason last year also, but their laudable Head Coach appears to foster a strong team spirit that lifts the entire squad up a notch or two. Panthers have been my Redlands Dawgs most challenging SCIAC opponents in the last five years, and they don't seem to rely as heavily on transfers as has been the case elsewhere at times.
I anticipate that the Chapman/Cal Lutheran game will decide the conference championship. Redlands has graduated too many stalwart defenders including SCIAC Dee Player of the Year, LB Mitch Shepherd.
Btw, I'm originally an OC guy too ........ Huntington Beach High Oiler (during the Punic Wars).

'Kickoff 2018' has delivered a lucid in-depth analysis of each SCIAC team, yet again!
Highlights are the prediction that the SCIAC champion won't go undefeated in conference games and the ranking of SCIAC at #22 out of 27 conferences.
Team rankings are as follows:
Redlands 61
Cal Lutheran 78
Pomona Pitzer 113
Chapman 119
CMC 128
La Verne 157
Whittier 217
Oxy 238
Tipping my hat to Pat and his team! Purchasing 'Kickoff' is such a cool way to say "muchas gracias" for D3football.com providing us this SCIAC Board with so many interesting commentators whose viewpoints I'd never get to hear otherwise. 😎

As always, I'm mucho pumped for another Redlands season to kick off, so many thanks for the team previews from the experts, OldDog and RFB. Of course, avidly awaiting Pat's 'Kickoff 2018' in August to find out what his pundits reckon about our SCIAC competitors.
What a great decade this has been for my Bulldogs! Since 2010 we have averaged just 1 loss per season in the SCIAC, and 3 of those defeats were by newcomer Chapman who has chalked up two championships that would've been won by UR in the "good old days of yore". My elation about the Bulldogs' consistent success is only a smidgen dampened by reading the baffling bellyaches in this board about such peripheral matters as some course that's disdained or that the president leaves games at halftime. But, hey, whatever floats your boats, guys.
Just checked the 'La Letra' from when I was a Senior, and coincidentally that year we also had just a single loss in the SCIAC (to Whittier during one of their golden eras). By the way, there was one African-American and no Mexican-Americans on that team.
Go Dawgs! :-)
