Quote from: Onward on, John Carroll on March 02, 2025, 11:28:06 AMA nice way to end our time in the OAC - winning the regular season title, winning the tournament title and knocking our rival out of the tournament while we did it.

I will miss the OAC. Loved our rivalries with Mount, BW  and Etta in hoops the last 10 years. Loved our battles with Capital in the 2000s. Love the coaches and road trips, campuses and fans.

To echo what was said above, Coach Fuline made lemonade with lemons, no doubt. He made the program relevant in the conference, then regionally, then nationally in rather quick order. He recruits well, he coaches well and he is an all-around nice guy on top of that. You were lucky to get him, you have been lucky to keep him and I hope he gets that title that he very much deserves.

And then there becomes "the silence of the lambs."

Well played....

But the face on the pillow, rosy in the firelight, is certainly that of Clarice Starling, and she sleeps deeply, sweetly, in the silence of the lambs.

I don't think John Carroll is going to have any turf under roof in that new facility they are building. I believe it is just track surrounding 3 courts - like Mount.

Quote from: bluestreak66 on February 14, 2025, 03:55:08 PMFinally found out John Carroll's non-conference schedule! We're opening at Waynesburg, followed by a trip to Johns Hopkins! If the team doesn't visit the crypt where the actual John Carroll is buried on the trip to Baltimore, I'm pretty sure that would be bad luck lol

I feel like if we drive to Baltimore and lose by four scores, the Mount Union fans won't be able to resist telling us "you could've stayed in the OAC and gotten an equally good butt kicking just 60 minutes away."

Quote from: Dr. Acula on January 10, 2025, 02:32:28 PMFor sure.  Mount benefitted from that when Gurley transferred to YSU then transferred back.  A coach would be foolish to not make sure good players know the door is always open.

Is the HS recruiting issue lack of landing high quality players or lack of developing kids once they're on campus?

I'm not smart enough to know the answer to that question. While development is important, I think the raw talent is necessary to allow for any development to manifest itself in wins and quality teams. I just feel like other than the nephew and his buddies, the talent is less than what it was during the previous regime. But I could be wrong and I could be just grumpy!! Six wins in a row have been nice - admittedly.

There is nothing wrong, especially at the division three level, in reminding student athletes who take a division one or division two scholarship, that they always have a place in your program if they want to return home. In fact, I think it is an excellent strategy at a school in a metropolitan area like John Carol. However, your life blood will still be recruiting high quality high school athletes right out of high school. He has failed to show an ability to do that.

Quote from: D3 Poster on November 14, 2024, 08:00:21 PMJCU will be inteteresting to see what they have next year...losing all ? the transfer ins after this year?  Time to restock.

I have concerns. This coaching staff had a great first season with the talent brought in and developed by the former coach. They then struggled mightily for several years and showed no ability to identify, attract and retain top-notch high school talent. Two years ago, the HC's nephew transferred from a D1 school and several other D1 and D2 transfers joined him for what has been a very very good three-year run. Those guys, for the most part, are gone after this season. I question the ability to reload at any level.

I'm not as frequent a poster or as witty a poster as bluestreak66 - and I am a rare "basketball first" JCU fan - but I go where you go, bluestreak66.

I am an NCAC man now.

Quote from: D3fanboy on November 25, 2024, 12:20:35 PMI have a feeling that Mount wouldn't have basically wasted a quarter offensively in the 3rd (and that 1 yard punt) with QB1 in the game. The fact that Mount only gave up one score during that disaster of a quarter is fairly impressive.  I will also add that 'Etta's second TD on 4th and goal would definitely not have stood if there was replay review.

I know that the Muskie game was absolutely disgusting defensively, but I think some of the vitriol towards the defense is based off of that showing.  If the effort/motivation/intensity/energy against JCU is the same as it was against Muskie and Otterbein, then we have much, much, much bigger program problems.

I'm sure JCU is a better team than in week 3, most playoff caliber teams are.  But some of this JCU "improvement" could be attributed to playing the garbage portion of the OAC and a playoff team that would fit in the bottom half of the conference.

We'll see what the value of the first round bye and multiple weeks to prepare for JCU is for Mount.  Dartt scares the hell out of me, but Mount should beat JCU once again.

39-3-2

Well, we have beat ya twice and tied you once during our time together in the OAC, and we have given you many excellent regular season tests that resulted in losses, Our playoff games have not been very memorable.

Raiders big.

Quote from: Dr. Acula on November 23, 2024, 08:11:50 PMThat's not good news for JCU.  They're good without him but if they want to be great they need him running the show.  Hopefully the boot is just a precaution.

He broke his foot. This team is designed around him/his skill set (as it should be) and most of the players seemed content to watch him do his thing and see what happens (which was the problem in the tournament game last year and not how it should be).

My Streaks are in trouble...unless Pete Moran has more D1 nephews who can transfer in, this season will be disappointing and next season will be worse.

Quote from: BergAlum2 on November 11, 2024, 10:47:14 PMHappy to see the Mount game was still on the OAC website tonight, gave the game a speedy watch.  Marietta gave Mount a run for their money, before Mount got the go-ahead score, I do wonder, Marietta was driving and past midfield, if they hadn't of held, putting them far behind the sticks maybe they would have gotten the first down and maybe got in field goal range, milking the clock.

I hope Marietta is able to pull off a win this week against JCU.  I think they could very well lose this one though; But I want the Blue Streak's last OAC game to be a L, with the win I'm assuming Marietta's NPI score should give them a playoff game

Not nice!! :D

Is it safe to assume with the current NPIs that Etta is in if it wins and JCU is out regardless?

Quote from: joelmama on July 11, 2024, 09:41:37 AMIt might at some point require scheduling some of the D2 programs in OH/PA to fill in a spot with a quality opponent.

would not shock me if the number of D2 programs in OH shrinks dramatically in the next few years

there is a program right up the road that would be a quality non-conference game after a year or so.  I wonder if they would be up for a "rivalry"

I would hope that there's occasionally a John Carroll-Mount Union non-conference game on the schedule, agreed.
I think the odds of that are slim to none unless/until Mount falls to the level of an "regular" D3 team.

I have to challenge the insinuation that JCU is dodging competition. As they did last year, the Streaks are opening the season with Wisconsin Whitewater. If JCU was trying to protect 9-1 and an at-large playoff berth, that would not be the way to do it.

Quote from: joelmama on February 29, 2024, 11:56:11 AMWouldn't a good solution be to have the HCAC and OAC merge into a 16 team league with two 8 team divisions (move Wilmington to HCAC division and have a couple of crossovers each year?

Wouldn't they lose an automatic playoff berth then?  The 2nd place team would not be guaranteed a spot.  I don't believe the NCAA would recognize it as two separate conferences/divisions/playoff births.

Yeah, I think this came up when people suggested the E8 and LL do the same. Why lose an autobid over this?

The reason to do it would be if both conferences thought they might lose schools in the next five years or so. We definitely will continue to lose small colleges, and it will almost certainly accelerate. Whether that's the right move for these two conferences is not in the scope of my post. :)

I think northeast Ohio could lose three more (over and above NDC) in the next 10 years.  Ohio, generally, will may lose several more in that time frame.  We have soooooo many small colleges in Ohio and the need for them is shrinking.
