South Region / Re: BB: CAC: Capital Athletic Conference
February 26, 2014, 10:43:00 AM
Looks like the Captains have gotten themselves going as they won their 3rd straight yesterday vs VWC. On the flip side is against competition whose combined record is 3-9. So let's wait and see how they fair this week against teams with better records in HSC, Cortland St., and a Montclair St., team that I am not sure about.

Looks like CNU is starting to come around offensively, but what is going on w/ what has traditionally been a very good pitching staff year in and year out.  The Captains are now 1-4 against what so far has been a very average schedule to start the season.

Boysofsummer21, CNU is not in a rebuilding year offensively. They only lost their 1st baseman from last years lineup. All of their returners all had 100 or more at bats last season. Now the pitching may see some changes as they lost a very good back end of the bullpen. So long story/short. I don't think CNU can claim a rebuilding year in 2014.

Well the 2014 Capital Athletic Schedule got off to an early start yesterday.  St. Mary's spoiled the debut for CNU as they beat the Captains at CNU.  If CNU is not going to beat the lower tier of the Capital at home it will be a long season.

Ok thanks Pneal, I was just wandering if he might have retired or moved on to bigger and better things.  Looking at his bio it says he started there over 20 years ago, and the CNU staffs sure have been good during his tenure.

I know CNU is no longer in the USAS, but I was looking at their website earlier and noticed they had hired a new coach for pitching. Hey Pneal what is up there?  Is the longtime pitching coach still there? Or did he move on and they hired a replacement?

26th round (Hou) William Austin Chrismon (Christopher Newport Univ.) RHP.  May be some confusion as he is listed as being at East Carolina Univ on the draft board.  He pitched for CNU in 2013 after transferring from ECU after the 2012 season.

Congrats to the six USAS players named to the South Region teams. Justin Weaver, Austin Chrismon, Ryan Fleischmann, Bryan Bierlein, Billy Steele from CNU, and Andrew Kirks from Averett.  Additional congrats to Austin Chrismon as he was named South Region Pitcher of the Year.

New regional polls are out.  Randolph-Macon is the 6th ranked team now. I heard that CNU is practicing.

Let me correct my last post as Shenandoah finished 11-7 or 6 games out of first place not 8 games out.

Quote from: D-BAT on May 08, 2013, 09:12:06 PMNow look at the numbers as of May 8th ... I can technically see why Frostburg is ranked and SU is not as Frostburg is higher in OWP, OOWP Win% and NCAA-SOS ...

BUT don't understand how CNU is ranked and SU is not as SU is higher in Reg'l Win%, OOWP Win% and NCAA-SOS vs. CNU.

(1)  51 Huntingdon           28-8   .778   .5603 (46)     .5262    0.549
(2)  79 Salisbury               25-4   .862   .5320 (109)   .5438    0.536
(3) 154 Millsaps                31-8   .795   .5183 (150)   .5166    0.518
(4) 142 Bridgewater         32-6   .842   .5150 (166)   .5299    0.520
(5) 192 CNU                 27-12-1  .688   .5091 (184)   .5093    0.509
(6) 108 Frostburg            23-13  .639   .5261 (126)   .5334    0.529
(?) 182 Shenandoah    24-10  .706   .5046(204) .5257    0.512
i can't say that i disagree with you...in fact, i think you could put su ahead of cnu and frostburg and i wouldn't argue, personally - it wouldn't matter though, because none of them are going to get a pool c bid :)
I think the reason the south committee has CNU ranked ahead of Shenandoah is because CNU finished first in the USAS. Which traditionally is probably the best conference in the south. I think they are giving credit for a whole body of work for a CNU team that plays 3 game series every weekend for a total of 24 conference games.  Shenandoah on the other hand finished 3rd in the ODAC 8 games out of first place, and went 0-2 in the ODAC tourney. I know that the comparison is not one of the statistical criteria, but it does make some baseball sense.

Looking at the regional and national rankings. I am not sure which is more messed up. Huntington is listed as #1 in the south but is not even ranked in the national poll. Also CNU which is ranked also in the south and has been ranked all year in the national polls. Just dropped out of the national poll w/o having played any games in the last two weeks. How do you not get ranked nationally and be the top seed in a particular region? Seems somewhat off to me. Also how do you not lose or play any games and drop out of polls? Shows you what the people around the nation think of the south.

Looks like the CNU/Bridgewater discussion is over as Bridgewater wins 2 games today vs Wesley to improve to 33-11.  CNU has to hope all the other tourney one seeds win around the nation.  If some of the others lose they go to pool C w/ CNU.

Strength of scheduleThere is no doubt Bridgewater has a better regional record. But if you look at both teams out of conference in region records they are very close.  Bridgewater is 8-3 and CNU is 8-4.  25 of Bridgewaters' 36 games in region are from ODAC competition. CNU has 27 of 42 games against USAS competition. Bridgewater had a fantastic season against mostly ODAC competition this year. They played 4 games vs USAS whereas, CNU played 9 games vs ODAC competition.

The NCAA Division III postseason selection committee determines strength of schedule using opponents' winning percentage and opponents' opponents' winning percentage. A team's SOS is two-thirds opponents' winning percentage (OWP) and one-third opponents' opponents' winning percentage (OOWP).

Those numbers follow, calculated by PrestoSports.

We've sorted these teams by their strength of schedule. This is only part of the process used to determine who will get selected to the NCAA Tournament.

Records and winning percentage are based on in-region games only. OWP: Opponents' winning percentage. OOWP: Opponents' opponents' winning percentage. SOS: two-thirds OWP and one-third OOWP.

                                Reg'l       Reg'l   OWP(Rank)  OOWP   NCAA
                                Rec         Win%

145 Bridgewater    30-6       .833   .5139 (166)   .5254    0.518

180 Shenandoah   24-10     .706   .5037 (200)   .5244    0.511

190 CNU             27-12-1     .688   .5081 (184)   .5091    0.508

What I do not understand is that the 1 game CNU is missing is a rain out against Salisbury. Why not just play it?
If I am correct you only get 19 total weeks of baseball in DIII excluding the regional and CWS. If CNU used their 4 weeks in the fall and started practice where they are now at 15 weeks in the spring.  Then they cannot play anymore games.  So they cannot make up any games at this point.
