D3Keith wrote in his around the nation column today about three different scenarios for the South. McMurry was in all three.

Only one thought. There are a lot of good points on both sides. Playoffs for points, backups scoring, manner of how scoring is done at the end of games; it all comes down to one's perspective.
This may not mean much to you UMHB2001, but if I were to defend McMurry (which I'm not officially
) I would say this. UMHB has made its name running the ball; they can control a game with such strategy at the end. McMurry is built on the pass - passing 50 to 60 times a game, that is how McMurry controls a game; running the ball means chewing the clock right? Not scoring quickly, burning clock, and if the poor team on the other side can't stop you, you score, but it was with dignity, correct? I agree.
Notice the play clock when McMurry passes at the end, if you notice that we are snapping the ball with 15-20 seconds on that clock, my argument is null and void, but I believe you will find that we don't.
Now, as far as whether we should run at the end, to win with class, or whatever you think. There are 221 teams in NCAA Division III; McMurry ranks #221 in rushing offense. If we spent an entire quarter, whether the game was out of reach or not running every down, we may not be able to keep the ball out of the other teams' hands.
Just a thought ...
On another note, I am taking a position within the university at McMury and will no longer be SID as of Nov. 3 - I will finish out the year as McMurry's primary contact for football, and hopefully that extends beyond Nov. 12
To all on this board, and D3; I've enjoyed my time as a part of McMurry athletics; I've seen the highs and lows of the football team, and am hoping that point spreads will help us get through if we can run the table.
As for Saturday, as a stat nerd, I like to judge my predictions based upon point spreads of common opponents; early in the year I would have expected a pretty one-sided game in our favor, but HSU has a transfer from my alma mater in Zack Stewart and they have the ball rolling. I am hoping for an exciting game, and can't wait for it.
I'll change my username soon, and chime in from time to time.
Good luck all

Speaking of SID's; prayers for UMHB's SID, Jon Wallin. Jon had a stroke four months ago; he was back at work, and in fact I spoke with him at the game Saturday. However, he had some complications this week and suffered some seizures, which has put him back in the hospital. Please lift he, his family and the UMHB athletic department up in prayer if you can.
His wife also writes a blog about his condition if you want to follow:

In all fairness, I will add a fifth, Hayden Nauert transferred from ACU as a kicker, he's not on the travel roster.

September 14, 2011, 01:27:50 PMQuote from: Ron Boerger on September 14, 2011, 01:20:06 PMNot entirely true. There are four NEW transfers to the roster for 2011, the other 13 listed on our roster transferred in before 09 or '10 season before any talk of D2 surfaced. You'll also notice out of the four transfers Colin Lund (PK), Greg Freeman (WR), A. Sanchez (DL), Ross Benge (LB); only two are on the travel roster, and Lund is the only player with significant playing time in the first two games.Quote from: Pat Coleman on September 14, 2011, 12:30:04 PM
McMurry cannot offer football scholarships this year, no.
You will notice that there are something like 17 transfers on the roster. It would not surprise me if some of them are there this year in anticipation of being first in line for scholarships next year. Not saying the coaching staff or anyone there has said anything to that effect, made any promises, or done anything that is contrary to NCAA rules.

September 13, 2011, 11:13:14 AMQuote from: Pat Coleman on September 13, 2011, 10:46:02 AMYou're right and the funny thing we talked about, was the sheer amount of people cheering for them makes you feel like they are so good. Amazing what support can do for the confidence of team. And .... it was awful fun to shut up a crowd of 31,000 on more than one occasion.
Well, I mean, it is true. UTSA is clearly an unknown quantity, about as unknown as it gets. It's hard to know what to make of the game in terms of assessing how McMurry compares to the rest of Division III.

I think what it says is that our voters believe there were at least 42 (or however many got votes this week, don't quote me) other programs that could have beaten UTSA. May be related to the fact that it was just the second game UTSA has ever played.

I believe Ron is correct, McMurry was NCAA III in everything beginning 96-97.

Those will be video highlights? Let us know -- we'll add them to the highlight reel we post each week.
Yep, and we're trying to get ESPN to let us upload an archived copy of the entire game so our subscribers can view.

We've done some more research and shared it -- I rediscovered that UW-La Crosse beat South Dakota State in 2006.
Sorry for the confusion on our part yesterday; actually I personally did not tweet that it was the first time that this had happened. Also if you watched our coverage, you may have noticed that Coach Mumme said it in the postgame as well. Pat helped us look up the above number, and also provided information that might interest ASC fans, and that is that Howard Payne beat Prairie View A&M in 1998 - so McMurry becomes the second ASC team to pull off the feat and the first D3 school in five seasons.
Either way, we're all still beaming. I'd like to go on record as saying that I am moving all further McMurry games home and road to the Alamodome
One more clarification - the listed games are D3 wins over SCHOLARSHIP D1 FCS schools - apparently there are several FCS teams that don't have scholarships, and D3's have had some success against them; even this season.
