I'm glad to see that La Crosse seems to be improving in the eyes of conference observers. I'll be surprised if they make a run at the title, but 4th place would be a sign of progress. The schedule is daunting with North Central and a strong D II school on the non-conference slate, but I'm looking forward to the season.

Screaming Eagle's latest post is spot on. UWL has concentrated on improving the academic reputation of the school for the past decade or two, and the athletics aspect has gotten short shrift in the process. SE is correct in pointing to the efforts of AD Josh Whitman as a catalyst for a turn-around in our football fortunes. While I was not surprised to learn that UWL had a much smaller football staff than some other WIAC schools, the revelation that we had the smallest for more than a decade was a real eye-opener. Imagine Larry Terry trying to recruit against much larger staffs in his later years as head coach.  Here are a couple of questions for your response and/or discussion: How do the other schools fund the larger football staffs which they have, and when did the increases take place ? What is a proper appropriation of University resources for Division III programs ? I am inclined to think that having 3 or 4 full time positions would be enough. How many full time positions do the private schools have ? I'll be interested in any of your thoughts. Thank you in advance.

Congrats to the co-champions, and a big "thank you" to the venerable Greek Tragedy for running the contest. Great job by all three.

Cubs: No injury or illness for Cale Zuiker. He played in the upset win over Point.

UWL's 2013 schedule has been posted, and as usual, it is a doozy. They open at home against Dubuque, which went 5-5 in 2012, but has greatly improved over the past several years. North Central visits next. They will be looking for revenge for the upset they suffered at La Crosse's hands last September. A visit to D-2 Missouri S and T rounds out the non-con slate. The conference schedule kicks off with a visit from the Warhawks, who also visited La Crosse last season. This is followed by a trip to defending champion Oshkosh. Even a good WIAC team could be facing 0-5 with such a schedule. In all, we may look forward to 6 homes games under the beautiful La Crosse bluffs.

Cubs: Sorry, no knowledge on why Zuiker didn't play at UWW. I'll keep my ears open and share anything I hear.
