how come sura isn't playing?

Hello it has been some time (years ) since Ive been on this board.  A couple of comments about CSTs trick play v Carlton.

SJU is not totally innocent of the same sort of deal-1993:  vs Carleton 70-7.  SJU went for 2 leading 68-7
That being said...

Carleton and SJU were undefeated going into that game and as I recall there was some smack regarding SJUs potent offense vs Carletons and I think it was a sort of a "teach you a lesson not to shoot your mouth game"

That being said...

The play highlights the enormous difference in current coaching philosophies between the humble leader (Fasching) and the self indulgent arrogance (Caruso).

SJU backed off the dogs early in the third and i don't think there 1 more time.  UST meanwhile scores on at least 2 pass plays in addition to the fake FG.

It will be interesting to see how seedings go, but I would love to see a SJU-CST rematch in playoffs in St Paul

Also, there has been some comments on the board about Carletons and MAcs ability to compete.  I think witht he right coaching, recruitment and chemistry they can.  They have demonstrated it historically (Mac in 80s) and Carleton in 90s and even bit under Ramler.  So it isn't inconceivable

Despite one of the worst officiating performances in the history of the MIAC, SJU overcame both GAC and the officiating to win.  I had visions of 87 in my head -esp with the phantom flag thrown after SJUs 1st interception in the 4th...

Did anyone else notice?  I mean even basic spotting esp by limpy linesman was 1 1/2 -2 yds off at times,,,,,

Oh well- A very good win for Johnnies

Outstanding second half adjustments, and my hats off to Mitch Hendricks---great play action, throws ball accurately and on a rope.

@ Duff- you are lucky you missed the Live Chat with Frank today. I have to applaud Frank for not absolutely dropping the F-bomb on some of these idiots. After the 3rd- "tar & feather Ramler & run him out of town" comment Frank politely said, "we've covered this territory before....about two questions ago..."

One guy threatened not to renew his season tickets after 26 years, if Ramler returned as OC
Damn, some people are idiots.

First-I agree with you Section 105 that with all of the uproar over Gary v Grant, many of us would take 7-3---easy.
Second-For the record, while I wish like hell SJU will beat Bethel, but I don't think that will happen.
Third-I don't think you can really do a comparative score thing with this SJU team--they seem to play to their level (For example, CST beat UWEC 56-7; SJU beat UWEC 17-14; almost lost that game, and yet, and SJU beats CST on the road...); plus one cannot forget the unimpressive W's vs Carlton and Hamline, and the loss v GAC, although I think GAC is a very solid team
Fourth-with reference to the quote above-I do think SJU needs to be way more creative with the offense--for example:
1.  Run the twins rt/split left 52
2.  Jimmy G told me at the beginning of the season this is the best OLine in like 5 years-if thats the case, would it hurt SJU to get behind the center on 3rd/4th & 1 and run the damn ball (QB sneak or something?)  It cleatly has hurt them to be in the pistol in these situations (ALA GAC game-Leading 17-10; 4th & 1 on GAC 39 late in 3rd and gain of 0-GAC goes down then and converts a TD to tie game) Arrgh  >:(
3.  Run a jet sweep every so often
4.  Maybe have a pitch option instead of a zone read with only the QB run option out of it
5.  Incorporate the TE into the offense
6.  Run a 52 or 152 for God's sake!!!!  ;)

OK--

SJU has to stop fkc$!ng around and win this thing.  Do they EVER go under center on 3rd/4th and 1?  I am so sick and tired of the pistol in these situations.......

This is why I HATE the pistol
You can never just pound it for 3rd; 4th  & 1
Why cannot SJU get a yard against (GASP) St Olaf??????

Young men, there's no need to feel down
I said, young men, pick yourself off the ground
I said, young men, cause we've tarnished your crown
There's no need to be unhappy

We won't kick you out of the M-I-A-C
We won't kick you out of the M-I-A-C
We have everything that you can enjoy
You cans hold hands with all the boys!

I'll dance to that.

Faunch-I didn't see the reference to the village people last night---I am still busting a gut....Awesome

Something about this photo from the SCTimes made me chuckle but I just don't think their caption captures the true essence of the photo.

SCTimes caption: University of St. Thomas fans leave the field after Saturday's game against St. John's at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.

FURY:  Love it!
Any creative types out there got any thoughts on a catchy quip for it?
"Craftsmanship not Crapmanship"

*my dad has that on a sign in his workshop. It somehow seemed appropriate! ;)

Good Karma on that one! ;D

"Following a 20-18 loss against St. John's on Saturday, a group of St. Thomas football fans leave the field to prepare construction on a new bandwagon to hop on."

Faunch-Ill try:

A couple of Tommie "Tools" leave the field in utter disbelief Saturday in St Paul as SJU Stuns UST 20-18

OR

Tommies run out of all options in the toolbox Saturday, lose 20-18 to SJU

Because St. Thomas has gone so deep in the playoffs lately, I've seen a lot of Tommies football the past few years.

Some gimmicks did work, some totally blew up in his face.

They call every game like this. Just the way they are. And honestly, generally they work.

PAT:  I recognize GC does this a lot---but the multiple changes late w personnel b4 the field goal was what i meant...

My thoughts on the game yesterday, but first a couple of replies:
"If you look on the In Game board, I asked if anyone else saw a block in the back on the fumbled, then recovered long punt return, right after the play. I thought I was alone."
I actually saw 2 block in the backs and a hold

Capn 34-No WAY is Bungum as good as Elliot.  He doesn't have breakaway speed and is no where near the power nor the playmaker Elliot was, no to mention the power back he displayed vs MTU in the 4th in 2003.

OK-Here are my observations from yesterday:

1.  Caruso-outcoached himself.  He got to cute and fancy.  Some gimmicks did work, some totally blew up in his face.  That being said, all the FAMILY hand holding crap, Glen Caruso halftime show (How the hell doe she get sportsmanship award after charging MTU when they kneel down?!?!?) was just all to arrogant, self serving, self absorption that makes me puke when I see him.  Classic case of little mans syndrome

2.  I think Ramler called a great 1st half, and crawled into a shell the second half.  I wished SJU was a little more daring with the play calling in the second half. Do they have any other running plays than a Zone read with no pitch option?!?!?

3.  D was soft in the middle in the 4th (Secondary) on USTs final drive.  That was the only weakness I saw in SJU D yesterday.  The reason why UST didn't run between the tackles is because ether couldn't---SJU plugged holes, displaced LOS, and even though they gave up 60lbs per player, outplayed Lineman U.

4.  I heard that SJU defense lined up wrong late, and O'Connell read it and tried to make something happen, but a last second adjustment forced him to slide on right hash.  This gets me to my point in #2-sometimes when even you throw out something you don't expect, it screws up the other team to force them not a bad play.

5.  Bruns layer very well yesterday-made very smart decisions at QB-O'Connell is a good runner, and thats it---he was terribly off and high yesterday---Bruns was precise in his placement of passes.

6.  Congrats to Gary and team.  I was definitely in the Grant camp-nothing against GAry at all, I was disappointed with the sham process Tom Stock put out there, but nonetheless, Gary deserves a ton of credit bc unlike GC, he credits his players, has stepped into this role with a tremendous amount of dignity and humility.  And, I know he recognizes how tough the Cobbers will be.

BTW-would love to hear "Fear the Ear"s assessment-he has my vote for the best online moniker here.....

Hey-does anyone know if there is a fan bus from SJU headed to St Paul?

Also--I don't have any specific Johnnie-Tommie jokes I can recall offhand, but I do remember one of the most clever stunt the RAt Pack ever pulled back in I believe 92 when they went incognito among the Tommie crowd, posing as UST students in Collegeville..As I recall the story they sat in the very first row or 2 of the Tommies visitor section

When-midway through the first they individually held up letters that spelled out
T-O-M-M-I-E-S as they faced the SJU crowd......to which they received a chorus of Boos,  upon which after about 5-10 seconds of boos turned to cheers, when the remaining 4 members revealed S-U-C-K to the SJU crowd.

It took a good 15-30 seconds before the Tommies section realized what was happening, to which the Rat PAck ripped off their Purple and Gray to reveal their true Red & white colors

Just a classic......
