That was not targeting, they seem to make that call when a player leads with his helmet, he lead with his chest and there was some incidental contact. The ground whiplash caused the issue not the helmet contact. Clean, football.

You are probably right.

Leo, the first thing I noticed is how slow they were too, I think LF is a three touchdown favorite over the Tommies. The issue is exactly what RFB pointed out, the SCIAC has not depth upfront, I have seen many a freshman get playing time in this league when they would have to wait at Midwest schools until their junior year. The Leos got it done with band aids up front. It was apparent watching the feed, that the Tommies would eventually overwhelm the Leos. Nice run for the team, great experience for the kids, something the program can build on. I like your third string QB, he has promise. He can makes throws.

And don't get me wrong St. Thomas is a very good team, I just am not sure they can run with the truly elite teams at this level. I anticipate they'll beat St. Johns this week, and if they do, I am very keen to see how they play Linfield.

I can't say enough how great their facilities were. There's nothing like that in the SCIAC. Really nice set up. Fans there were great. Overall it was a lot of fun and a good experience for the kids.

I agree with you, I like what I saw from the freshman kid. Making your debut on the road in 20 degree weather against a top 5 team in the playoffs is a difficult way to start. He should be prepared for anything after that.

I am curious to take another look at the hit on our starting QB in the first. I didn't see it, but I heard it. I heard some rumbling that it looked like a targeting type play, but haven't looked yet. I'll get some feedback later.

Good luck to the Tommies, and thanks to their fans for being so receptive.

Let's us know on the targeting, would be a shame. It was tough to tell on my pc. The SCIAC conference really is not committed to sports compared to Tex and Midwest schools. Night and day, so when UR upset NCC is was huge, they too have great facilties,....Linfield is the nicest in the west.

I just saw an end zone replay of it. Looked helmet to helmet as the defender went high. Don't think it was malicious but may have warranted targeting penalty.

You can see it early in this recap

I was in attendance this weekend, and I was one of the people who mentioned the difference in speed. It wasn't meant as a slight, it was simply an observation. To me there is a noticeable difference in team speed between the Tommies, most of the other SCIAC teams, and Linfield all of whom I've seen.

St. Thomas is obviously a very good and well coached team, wasn't meant as a slight, just something that I noticed almost immediately while at the game. If they win this week, I am very interested to see how they match up with Linfield.

We have deceptive speed in the MIAC  :) With your Elliots and your Waldvogels and whatnot. They just sort of glide.

Anyway, fast or slow, 31 from La Verne got scorched multiple times.

Also, historically UST and SJU have matched up pretty well with Linfield. Don't remember there ever being a lopsided score.

TitanPride,

Don't know how accurate this will be, but I would expect possibly 8,000 or so. Not quite the 12K UST/SJU has gotten in St. Paul, but definitely over capacity. Looks to be mid 30s and sunny on Saturday, so, could get a decent crowd if people are sick of looking at their relatives for the 3rd day in a row. My advice would be to drive by the night or day before to see if UST brought in temporary bleachers, if they did behind at least one end zone I'm guessing you'll find a spot, if not, get there an hour early.

Not sure what it has to do with lopsided scores. 31 got put in somee tough situations when ULV went to a zero coverage look. Doesn't really say much. I beat players a lot faster than me in the same situations during my career. UST had some great play design and timely play calls for sure.

Meh. If you're in zero coverage and your responsibility is the tight end, I don't see how he just blows your doors off. It'd be one thing if he just used his size to make a play, (or, this would be sad, just shook him with a deceptive route) but that wasn't the case. If your argument was your team speed was better, my argument is that our tight end ran a simple seam route right by one of your fastest players.

If that's your argument that there wasn't a difference in team speed so be it.

I'm just not seeing it. If Sparks-Jackson had a foot race against our fastest guy, then sure. But overall team speed was comparable.

I saw it differently. Like I said just my observation but it jumped out at me while there. If you saw it differently I have no problem with that.

I've been to Linfield. Great facilities. Plus it seemed like the whole town showed up for their game.

They definitely looked faster vs. St. John's.

The question is, was that because of St. Johns? I don't know, I haven't seen them play and this was the first I've seen of St. Thomas. I wonder if St. Johns will glean anything from this game, as La Verne did a nice job slowing the Tommies rushing attack to well below their season average? I am not sure how their first meeting played out, so maybe they already did figure that out?

Also Pat, I heard nothing but good things about you from the La Verne staff. Thanks for being so hospitable while they were out there.

Just got back from Minneapolis. St. Thomas facilities are really nice. About as nice as any I've been to at this level.

Leo's played tough early. They lost their starting QB on their third play from scrimmage, and then had to become one dimensional on offense. They then lost their 2nd QB and had to play a freshman at QB who's hadn't taken a snap all year for 2 and 1/2 quarters. In the end it wouldn't have mattered but they probably would've moved the ball a little better and may have kept the score a bit closer. As it stands, with the Tommies knowing  La Verne was going to essentially run the ball every play the Leos still had over 200 yards on the ground. So that's a positive.

St. Thomas has a ton of size up front on their OLine, but they don't have a ton of speed at the skill positions and aren't overly athletic. To me St. Thomas is a very good team, but I don't think they match up well with the Linfield's of the world. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Sad to see this season come to an end but it was a lot of fun.

I hope you guys enjoy game up in ST Paul...The Tommies are ready for the Leopards! The game is going to be a cold one for the Leopards in the 20's at game time BRRRR ;D.  The Tommies will not be affected by the weather this is still fall for them.  What did you guys do to the NCAA that made you guys fly half way around the country to play the Tommies in the first round? I don't understand ???  I hope your boys now how to bundle up?

It's going to be in the low 30's or high 20's. Shouldn't have much affect on La Verne. I am a So. Cal native but my college playing career was in a cold weather area. Low 30's and 20's is quite comfortable to play in once you get warmed up, never affected me once. Unless we're talking Ice Bowl conditions, I've always found the weather issues to be overblown as both teams have to play in it, and once you get your first hit on someone you forget about it anyway.

La Verne is the only team to fly in the first round, as to why? I am still fairly new to the D3 level of play and honestly a lot that is done at this level makes zero sense to me.

That said good luck to your Tommies this weekend, they appear to be an outstanding team, and I am looking forward to my visit to your city. In fact I am leaving for the airport in a few short hours.

RFB,

There was a time when UR facilities were some of the better small college facilities in terms of football but overall other teams in the SCIAC have passed them up.

D3 football programs that are pulling away from others have some common themes, besides the school issues of, aid, majors, etc

1) four or five full time coaches, not three
2) Separate lockers, it will be needed more than ever if spring football goes full gear
3) Dedicated meeting rooms/player lounge
4) Separate Weight Room
5) Dedicated practice fields

Lastly I agree on a new head coach at Whittier, find the best assistants who know league and make a run at those guys.

I wouldn't count on Full Padded Spring football any time in the near future. My understanding is there's a real resistance to it within the league.

Got my trip booked for Minneapolis. As I said earlier just going to enjoy the ride as long as it lasts.

Let me know if you'd like any recommendations (food, sights, etc.) in the area or if you have any questions about the game day details. Most of the latter should be covered pretty thoroughly be tommiesports.com, of course.

Absolutely. I've never been. I do have family and friends there so I won't be flying totally blind. If you have suggestions hit me with them.

We are lucky the weather doesn't appear to be too bad. Sunny and in the 30's late in the week. That I can deal with.

Jellerson? He was forced out because Stratton and Clark told Coleman (the ad) that Jellerson called Coleman's wife a fat f##king pig..which was untrue. But instead of confronting
Jellerson, he launched an "internal" investagation, without Jellerson's knowledge and only spoke to two disgruntled coaches..Statton and Clark (two coaches Jellerson wanted to get rid of) and a couple of disgruntled players..and that's how Coleman and why he fired Jellerson..Whittier always kept it hush hush because Coleman didn't want his wife embarrassed. And your right old dawg Jellerson did bring in darn good players and left Stratton with 90 plus players.
Now the last 2 or 3 years an average of 50? Fear the Poet?
2012 4-5
2013 1-8
2014 2-7
2015 0-8 and one of the worst football teams in the entire country! Looks like Coleman and Strattons chickens came home to roost!
I can verify this. I heard a similar story for someone inside that program.  To much drama for me.
