Also a few long plays cut down on both the TOP and # of plays, but might result in scores - 70 yard pass play shows "credit" for the yards gained and points, but fewer plays and shorter TOP.

Likewise, short fields to start your drive cuts down both TOP and # of plays, but might result in scores.

Quote from: SJU13 on November 16, 2024, 09:00:49 PMPassing attack had a few uncharacteristic drops and overthrown balls while still managing to sling it for over 400 yards, 5 tds, and no picks.

Yeah, I was thinking that Aaron was having an off day (and I still think it was a sub-par day for him), but most QBs would love a stat line like that.

Took 8 sacks, at least a couple or so due to holding the ball too long, IMHO.  2 intentional grounding calls? Hard to criticize him, he's a fine QB, glad he's running the Johnnie show this year.

Quote from: faunch on November 10, 2024, 03:39:51 PMIs this weeks game a noon start?

VOJ and Fasching emphasized on Saturday's post game show that it is noon.

Quote from: retagent on November 03, 2024, 09:23:43 AMA couple posts were a bit skeptical of the second and third string Johnnies. Considering they have not had a lot of playing time, you have to realize it takes a bit to get up to real game speed. Riviere was something like 3 for 11 at the start, but after that, I believe he was well over 50%. He's a Freshman. Other than QB, which is still a question, the skill positions going forward look pretty set. O Line and a few defensive positions will be open, but, it seems like they do have capable backups (Harren?). They did pretty well keeping the shutout.

What do others think?

S0 Bougie and FR Oftedal have seen PT, started Saturday on OL. SO Schwellenbach has played at WR, RB Blakey has So eligibility.

So McMahon starting at LB, FR Hoyt at DB, FR Minnerath seen some PT already on DL.

Some help is on the way!

Quote from: faunch on October 19, 2024, 10:46:25 PMAlso only 35 penalty yards...and i believe no personal fouls.

According to the Carls broadcaster, several Johnnie PFs were missed.  ::)

What, you want an unbiased home broadcast? Good luck finding that...

That being said, I do look forward to the day that there is a new play-by-play guy for Carleton. I know he's been doing it a long time and he's a nice folksy guy, but I can't help but look around at some of the other MIAC broadcasts and feel that their announcers are able to keep up better. Also the production quality seems to have fallen off a bit, especially compared to St. Olaf and Gustavus

I didn't hear - or maybe just didn't pay attention - to the moaning about missed calls. But I did notice that he frequently missed the down and distance and placement of the ball. "Looks like he's just short of a first down - oh wait, he's cut it to 2nd and 11." That kind of stuff.

Very "old school" sounding, I was thinking Gophers/Ray Christianson. I don't mind a call like that really, as long as it's "accurate".

Quote from: faunch on October 06, 2024, 11:40:56 AMWhat the hell was with that targeting call on Arneson in the second quarter? What a horrible call...i mean absolutely horrible

It was a bad call.  On the post game show, Fasching said the refs can/do review the targeting calls at half-time (this procedure was news to me) and "called off" the targeting call and allowed Arneson to play second half (I didn't catch that at the game).

There were several calls that looked questionable, not only in real time but on the "Gagliardi Board" replay. Refs were getting plenty of live reviews from the Johnnie faithful.

Quote from: faunch on September 21, 2024, 03:08:24 PMTommie$ are losing 21-0 to the 0-3 D2 Lindewood Lions 🦁 🤣
42-0 at the half. They are D1 FCS Missouri Valley Conference. And not good. 0-3 this year. 3-7 last year.

Looks like moving to the MVC is a pipe dream at this point.

Lindenwood is not MVFC. FCS Ohio Valley Conference, scholarships. Most would agree OVC is not at MVFC level.

From the nitpicking department - - -

We had to leave the Johnnie game early to get to a wedding, and we listened to VOJ and company in the car on the way. Did I hear them calling Blakey "Blake-LEE"? With an L in the second syllable?  If so, sad mistake to such a seasoned crew - this guy is gonna be pretty valuable by the end of October. And SJU communications staff or someone shoulda been on it in short order.  No reason for it.

If I heard it wrong (and Blakey and Blakely can sort of sound the same over the radio I guess) I apologize to VOJ.

Quote from: sjujohnnie on September 11, 2024, 02:02:34 PMLast year, in 2023, I purchased the streaming access to watch St John's home football games through Hudl for $66.30. This year the price rose to $82.80, but purchased so that I can cheer on the Johnnies! It was my understanding that the games would be available "On Demand" in the event that I was not able to watch live. Attempted to find Saturday's game, although I was able to watch it live as I was under the weather, but received a message that read, "This broadcast has been made unavailable by the owner." What a crock of crap! So much for "On Demand" if anyone who purchased a subscription has a conflict! Who would "the owner" be? I'd like to contact them!

Re: the price, SJU only had 5 home games last year vs. 6 this year. Just guessing that's a factor.

I'm trying to picture what used to be there.  Looks to be just down from The Bullpen and Green Acres, if my party house geography is still OK.  ;)

It was an old gas station / service shop

I read that they also bought or leased a lot from the nuns across Minnesota St. for parking. Also in previous reports, they are also going to have one of those "self-serve" beer pouring walls?  I'm not clear on the concept, but there are others around apparently. Guess here is where I read it:

Quote from: chewey on July 26, 2024, 08:31:55 PMThe Johnnies will be as good as their defense this year.  If the defense is as terrible as it was last year, it will be another year of mediocrity.  Seems like some lethargy and acceptable mediocrity may have set in at SJU.

Top 3 areas for improvement.
1. Defensive line play...we got pushed around by teams last year.
2. Linebackers and secondary wasn't great either. Good passing teams picked us apart.
3. Any chance we develop any sort of legitimate run game on offense. I get it the short passing game kind is a de facto run game. Not having a target like Larson this year could be an issue. One would think that our passing game would actually set up a run game.

I don't really disagree with any of those points.

Looked at the stats from last year, and Johnnies gave up 87 yards per game rushing. Not sure how much better you get from there. Seems like they got pushed around some last year tho, for sure.

Short passing game - Feddema averaged 2 catches and 20 yards per game, Vouk 1 catch and 9 yards per game. Underwood 1 catch and 6 yards per game. Seems reasonably effective but need more of it?

Only averaged 113 yards per game rushing.  Definitely gotta get some more there.
