In the NCAA tourney, a win is a win is a win, the goal is survive and advance..............

with that said, Hope will need to play their best game of the year tomorrow night to eliminate IWU.

Snuggs will not have 37 pts tomorrow, I guarantee #32 for IWU (Davis) will make sure of it.

NVA and LN need to be involved tomorrow night for a Hope plays, Hope wins game

Well, my guarantee was garbage.  Snuggs you were unreal this weekend.  Hard to believe he goes for 37 and 40 and they don't get to play next weekend.

Knights2000 - guess you missed this post :P

Congrats to Hope on their victory last night and good luck Saturday and in the NCAA Tourney.

A concern of mine throughout the year has been 3 areas --- Rebounds, FT Shooting and 3's made.

The Dutchmen are a very talented team and a team that can go on incredible runs that most (maybe all, we shall see) D-3 teams cannot contend with and/or overcome.

However, if the Dutchmen are derailed at some point between today and the Div III finals, I believe one or more of the areas above will be their downfall.

Let's look at the 2nd Half of the MIAA season and these categories:

Opponent                     Rebounds                   FT Shooting           3's Made

Adrian                     43 vs 45 (28 offensive)            20-23                         6
Albion                      37 vs 22                               14-19                         5
Kzoo                       41 vs 31                                 6-13                         3
Calvin                      29 vs 43 (19 offensive)            20-26                        7
Olivet                       51 vs 31                               14-21                        3
Trine                         43 vs 30                               7-12                         4
Calvin                       34 vs 39 (13 offensive)            20-33                       9

Some things that stick out, against the teams Hope should be, they clearly had the rebounding advantage.  Against the #2 and in my opinion #3 team in the league, they lost the rebounding advantage all 3 games and gave up significant offensive rebounds.  My guess is any team Hope plays in the Div III tourney will be at least the caliber of Adrian and/or Calvin.

In regards to FT shooting, in those 3 games where they lost the rebounding battle, they made 20 FT's and with the exception of last night, at a nice %, greater than 75%.  However, in their last 3 games, they are 41-66 or 62.1%.  In a close, NCAA tournament game, 62%, will most likely lead to you going home.

Finally, 3 pointers made, have been an area of concern for me all year.  In their regular season, Hope has been able to neutralize their lack of 3 pointers due to the slashing ability of Krombeen, Overway, Bunn, etc.  However, as they progress in the tournament, I would expect this to be a more and more difficult task.  That is why (as mentioned by several on here), that the return of Logan's 3-stroke is important and clearly hitting 9 last night is a point in the right direction.

I believe for Hope to "win it all", they must win at least 2 of these 3 categories in each game.  History shows at all levels of basketball, if you can win the rebounding battle and shot a high % of FT's (75% or greater), you have a great chance of winning.  As the games get more physical in the tourney and quality of opponent improves, this will be something to watch for Hope.

Those are my 2 cents.........dissect, agree and critque as you like.  I wish Coach Neil, Daav and the entire Hope program the best wishes..........................Hang a Banner!

I know you have highlighted this also hoopdreams, but here is my post from awhile back:

Tonight

IWU 49 to 41 rebound advantage (19 to 9 offensive)

IWU 35 of 47, 74.5% (after starting the game 2-7)
Hope 20 of 35, 57.1% (16-30 in regulation, one more make sure would have been nice)

IWU, 9 three's (Zimmer 7 by himself)
Hope 5 three's (2 each for Snuggs and Colton, 0-4 for Krombeen)

I predicted Hope needed to win 2 out of 3 categories (especially against more physical teams) to advance in the tourney.

Tonight at Devos, Hope loses all 3 categories.

IWU plays next weekend

Gosh this one stings................

Brings back very, very bad memories..............

I take you back to my sophomore year at Hope (1988), we travel to Ohio Northern and down Muskingum 80-75 and then have a double OT heart-breaker where we lose 110-107 to Ohio Northern at their place.

I will not sleep much tonight thinking about tonight's game and the ugly nightmares it returned to my mind from the winter of 1988

Congrats to IWU - played hard for 50 minutes and got it done.  Good luck the rest of the way.

Thanks to Hope, especially the seniors for a great year.

Kvision= my last obsevation pertained to one of the most successful coaches in D3 history, who by all accounts was incredibly animated (fans say passionate), highly talkative to officials during games ( non fans can insert their own adjectives) and always made people cheer, gasp or laugh at his antics- foot stomping, bench kicks with his heel ( in the Civic of course), coat tail flapping or just plain coaching 5 feet on the floor during game play ( I've actaully witnessed kids in transition have to change their path to avoid contact).

Really had nothing do do with a Hope player, simply a Hope fan with the nerve to question an opposing players reaction to a foul.

So with the focus now squarely on Snuggs, who benefits?  NVA if he can avoid foul trouble or the guards, who should see some pretty clean looks.  Maybe IWU will dare them to shoot three's.  Haven't we already seen that show?

I see another highly physical game ahead with foul trouble and FT's having a huge impact. Hopefully the right people get to the line early, knock a few down and get the mo-jo flowing.

HOPE PLAYS, HOPE WINS!!!!!   Cannot wait to watch the boys cut down another net!!!  Who pays for all those?

Wow, hoopdreams, appreciate the cheap shot.  I would expect more from you, but guess I was mistaken.

I agree however, GVW deserved many more "T"'s for his antics, but officials view coaches and players differently IMHO

If you return to last Saturday, Adrian player does a similar thing in MIAA Championship game and gets T'd up immediately.

Last night's reaction was more demonstrative and no T.  Maybe it is MIAA officials vs Tourney officials.

However, if a player reacted to an official like that over a call, it is definitely a "T".

I think your comparison of GVW vs last night is bogus.  But you are entitled to your opinion.  As am I.

In regards to Snugs, "antics" I agree.  Want to wager if Snuggs has a similar reaction tonight to an IWU player that the Westminister had to him, I'll take the "T" route, you can have the no-call route.  Deal? :P

Finally, great article and opportunity for Ty Tanis.  One of my favorite players of Hope's past.  Go get'em Ty!

If anyone is going to whine about the refs, it should be the unranked blue jays, not the #1 ranked hope. From what I hear, a few calls went Hope's way, including an apparent flagrant as verdis lee went up for a lay up. Way to play Westminster! They never gave up.

Not going whine about the refs, just going say (I was there), sounds like "you just heard", it was a physical foul, but not a flagrant foul and the refs did discuss it before ruling a 2 shot foul only, no flagrant.

However, how a "T" was not called on Lee for his reaction and antics after the play was surprising.

Now.......if we want to talk about a flagrant foul, we will have to ask David Krombeen how he went flying from one side of half court to the other side of half court early in the game, thanks to #22 Skylar Tolson.

Nice win by IWU tonight against the Point.

As a Hope fan, loved getting to watch a hard played game prior to the Hope game.

Was very impressed with IWU's defense and overall intensity.

#25 Zimmer? did appear to be limping with ankle in the 2nd half

#32 Davis, well, all I can say is he is a MAN.  He will give Hope fits tomorrow night.

Please allow me to take a moment to thank the guys who do the radio broadcast of Hope games.  If their passion for Hope basketball annoys you, I'm sorry.  I for one am so grateful for the work that they do.  Having watched them for years schlep around the league, making do with whatever technology is or is not available at various venues, crawling under bleachers to make connections, literally phoning it in when a school doesn't have the necessary technology, getting home late, leaving home early, doing their research, knowing their team inside and out and doing a great job with opposing teams, I for one am impressed and thankful.  I had to miss a game a week or so ago (one of two I've missed in the past 5 seasons), and being able to listen to the broadcast made me feel like I was there.  FDF has had a similar experience while traveling for work.  So if it's not your cup of tea, fine, then don't listen.  But don't bash these hard working men.  That's just a cheap shot.  Not many of us would or could do all that they do to bring Hope basketball to those who can't attend.

CM, for one I respect your position and you have a right on a discussion board to post your viewpoint.  But remember, on a discussion board, I have a right to post mine too.
Using your own words, "miss a game a week or so, in the past 5 years", that shows your dedication to attending the games and observing these announcers attending them also.  However, it does not give you much evidence of listening (enduring) to them from both a Hope fan and a non-Hope fan's experience.
While they may well attend alot of games and carry alot of equipment, their performance is below par, dare I say below "Hope standards".  If the performance of the team was based on the announcers, Hope would be near the bottom of the league.

Just for reference, on several occasions, going back to the days of WHTC, I have personally called the radio station, during games to have someone contact RW and have him please call the player(s) by their correct names.  Marcus VanderHeide will always be Marcus VanderHeide, not Mike VanderHeide or Marcus VanderVelde.

The only portion I listen to is the post-game to get Dav's insight on the game.  However, with JK's continual interruption of him mid-answer it can be quite frustrating.

Finally, as a Hope fan, this is hard, but from a non-Hope fan's perspective, I have on several occasions cringed about their comments about other teams and their total butchery of other team's players names.  At least, we do not have to hear GC, yell "Briaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Ebels" anymore.

In today's media and internet era, I believe it is time (well past time) for an upgrade.  This doesn't mean these men and the others who have worked with them, haven't logged many miles and hours, carried equipment or obviously enjoy Hope.  It just means it is time for a change.  I would compare to many Calvin's fan view of the current situation with KVS.  I am sure he has worked very hard over his career and logged many miles and hours, carried many bags of basketball.  But, several people on this discussion board like too and should be able to express their opinion, without someone saying "don't take a cheap shot".  Especially someone who has listened to 1 or 2 broadcasts in 5 years.

I challenge you to bring you "I-Pod" or in your case maybe your "Walkman" and listen to them for an MIAA season and see if you have a different opinion.

Calvin-Hope III tomorrow. Massey says Calvin by 14. Ross says that Hope presents matchup problems and the Knights will have to play their best game of the season to win.

Even allowing for a little coachspeak, I do expect it to be a hard-fought, competitive, close, fun game to watch.

I would say this one is over.........except for the final score..............Calvin 22-3, 707 to go in 1st half.

Hope is 1-22..............OUCH

Random Thoughts about today's Adrian vs Hope game:

1.  NVA - I think today we saw the difference he makes for this team.  Especially DK and NS.  Just his presence in the game makes a huge difference on both ends.  This is to take nothing away from DK or NS, but life is a whole lot easier with the big man in there.

2.  NVA - even though Adrian's D did have alot to do with this, not having NVA in the rotation, really make Hope's offense look lost at times and out of synch.

3,  NVA - this may be wrong of me (I don't know the details of the health situation), but no way I can show up and sit on the bench of the MIAA Championship game, throw the ball around during warm ups and not PLAY in the game.  My guess is he may have not been medically cleared to play, but these opportunities don't come along very often.

4.  Game - playing a 45-minute, close all the way game, could do Hope alot of benefit come the next 3 weeks.  Plus the physical style is what is likely to be the type of games in the next few weeks.

5.  FT (despite a few comments already made here) - I was thrilled with Hope's FT shooting today 17-21 for the 1st 40 minutes, wins alot of games and was a major improvement from the last 3 games.

6.  Logan Neil - looks like LN hates to see seasons end - he was outstanding during the soccer team's tourney run this fall and he has played his best 2 games of the year this week.  If he plays like that for 3 more weeks.  Well..................

7.  Richard Pack - that was one whale of a 2nd half young man.

8.  Rebounds - Hope wins the battle narrowly today, but big improvement over the past 2 meetings with Adrian and they tie with 12 offensive rebounds each, last meeting Adrian had 28.

9.  Wallace Whitfield - I have to do it, I know it will be viewed negatively on this board, but he was horrendous today.  Near the end of OT, he visibly appeared genuinely disappointed that Hope won.  His inconsistency on the 2 ends of the floor was evident.  Please Adrian do not view this as taking anything away from the Bulldogs effort or performance.  Just my opinion of one official's performance today.

10  Coach Mark White - wow is he impressive and what he gets his team to do and gets out of them.  I would love to have a son play for a coach like that.

Wow, what a ball game today.

First of all, my congratulations and admiration goes out to Coach White and his team from Adrian.  Despite not getting the outcome they had desired, they have nothing to hang their heads about.  They played with passion, desire and to their gameplan about as well as possible.  This team works so hard and Coach White puts them in position to get the most out of their abilities.  I am extremely impressed.

This Adrian team reminds me of the Pistons in the 80's, when they could not quite get over the hump with the Celtics and then a few years later with the Bulls getting over the hump with the Pistons, once they did, wow, look out they never looked back.  I feel this is where Adrian is today, once they crest the hill (and they almost did today), look out they may not look back.

I know there is some first round opponent who should thank Hope for that team not having to play Adrian in the 1st round of the tourney
